Recommended ISPs (moving to Gdańsk)

Hi. I'm moving to Gdańsk in a couple of weeks and my first priority will be to get an Internet connection. Are there any ISPs that are particularly good (or bad)? I think the most important factors are connection speed and customer service, especially how quickly the service can be set up.

In Poland it usually depends on whichever firms have the cables to your area.Mostly there's just one firm per area, but if you have a choice, use UPC - they are usually excellent.

Thanks. Their offer does look good but sadly they don't supply my street. I don't suppose there are any tools for checking who supplies which areas, are there?

If you're in an apartment building, there are usually stickers somewhere. I don't know of any tools. Aster City is the other main one, as is Neostrada (whose speeds are sometimes excellent, sometimes terrible depending on area). There's one called, I think, NT - but that's only in certain cities. Anyone in the building will know the one they all have and as soon as you switch a laptop on the list of people's wifi names should give a clue. Installation is quick - the last time I did it was in an aster City area and from visiting the shop, I had it all set up within 24 hours.

24 hours? Last time I had a new Sky installation in London, it took 12 weeks!!! It's nice to be moving to the developed world!

Wow! If I hadn't been at work that day, I could have had it even quicker. Because the cabling is fitted to each floor of the apartment building, all they have to do is switch it on and staple some wires to your skirting board.

netia is good, so is neostrada. do not get polsat cyfrowy. it sucks rocks.

I would say which ever firm you choose, try to get one that doesn't require a contract -- the customer service is much better, as they are motivated to actually give you service and fix any problems when they come up. I highly recommend Elpro/ Nitka, but i think it may be just in this region. Great service, they use a radio signal and everything was hooked up in two days. No contract.

The worst of all -- is Neostrada -- the only thing worse than the cruddy connection which goes off and on, for hours or even days at a time, is the non-customer service. It is what nightmares of post-communist Polish red tape are made of. I have honestly seen better service in Russia.

Also, be sure to check if they have synchronous upload and download speed. _ A lot of companies that boast about fast speed only talk about the one speed -- upload, but downloading is much slower.

I was stuck with them for two years and couldn't get out-- like being stuck in a bad relationship with a psychotic stalker.

You can try internet connection LTE at Plus (mobile operator).
It works very good. Speed is better than most of the wiered connections. It becomes more and more popular.

Thanks for the answers so far. I'm certainly keen to avoid a contract and Plus LTE sounds ideal. I've found the coverage map but it doesn't go down to street level detail. Is there any way of finding out if it's available at my address without buying a dongle and testing it?
