So what if I was a devout Catholic Scot that went into a church here with a kilt on? Would that be considered as modest apparel? if there are no objective definitions then it is left to us to gauge the relevant cultural norm, right?

No,thats silly, the Kilt is widley seen as smart wear,or would be in the context of being worn to church. Shorts,on an adult man are just sloppy dressing and bad manners, especially at an obviously special time in the calendar.

well, you shouldn't be wearing shorts to church....

What Catholic church do you go to? In the States in the summer just about everybody where's shorts to the Catholic Church. It's the Protestant churches that are more dress conscious.

The Pharisees believed this, during times of fasting they would paint their faces white to show everyone they fast. Christ heavily criticised this. Did he have a right to do it??? Christ didnt like it and he spoke out about it. Nobody forced Christ to teach against the Pharisees, he chose to do it.

Pharisees in the Bible are Christ's criticism of organized religion.

And he should also do it on a wedding or funeral. After getting critical reaction, he might come and start a new thread: How could things get so wrong(wedding/funeral dress code).

Pawian, the difference is that you are told to take your shoes off when entering a mosque. It was that way in Tirana when I was there. They actually enforced the rules.

You clothing must also cover your knees and elbows.

Poland isn`t like the States yet.

No, we still have money here lol

The example of Tirana mosque isn`t a good one. They enforce shoe taking off because people still need being reminded how to behave in such a place:

The campaign against religion peaked in the 1960s. Beginning in 1967 the Albanian authorities began a violent campaign to try to eliminate religious life in Albania. Despite complaints, even by APL members, all churches, mosques, monasteries, and other religious institutions were either closed down or converted into warehouses, gymnasiums, or workshops by the end of 1967.[27] By May 1967, religious institutions had been forced to relinquish all 2,169 churches, mosques, cloisters, and shrines in Albania, many of which were converted into cultural centers for young people.

And we can afford longer pants? :):):)

Is a kilt really appropriate given that we wear nothing under it? Also, my shorts go every bit as far down as my kilt does. Ok, give or take a little. Modest apparel is the criteria so no leg showing. A skirt is perfectly respectable female attire but some are frowned upon. Maybe a measuring tape should be introduced to the Church entryway? ;) ;)

Once my schoolmates were punished by principle for wearing shorts in school... so as you see it's not only about churches.

wearing shorts in school... so as you see it's not only about churches.

Schools are type of a church, where people pray through science to the same God, whom we constantly search. The dressing code, therefore, should be appropriate to this religious institution.

Will you also deny Pawian that Catholics are encouraged not to take mass unless they have been to confession???

It's a sin. But how they knew you hadn't confess?

People who know nothing about respect are from PiS! :

Is that a fact? I don't know, I'm not from PiS, but you said a few months ago that you are from PO, and I can only say that people from PO are either fools, traitors or trash, or any given combination of those three.

I was dragged along to Church this Easter and just happened to be wearing shorts

I hope you burn in hell for wearing shorts to church on Easter !!! You should have been wearing a toga, think what would Jesus do? but seriously what is the big deal?

I was dragged along to Church this Easter and just happened to be wearing shorts, as the weather dictated. As soon as I walked into the Church, I was greeted with an extremely frosty reception, old ladies tutting, stares and a good telling off during my exiting the building.

And what did you expect?
Next time don't shave your legs. This made all the old chicks in chirch jealous.

Jesus came to preach against the practices of the Pharisees, who just cared about how they looked in the eyes of other worshippers.

This is what Jesus *really* preached: There are no sins. Of course *that* message rendered their religion useless, so that's the *real* reason as to why he got crucified.

It seems the Pharisees are back.

Really? I was thinking they never left.

Church territory-church rules. If you don't like it simply don't go there.Every intelligent person knows how to behave and knows, that in some situations and places you must behave in a certain way no matter what you think of that (e.g. you think that dress code is stupid)

if the male should be covered for modesty and respect, then so should the female.

Of course they should but many girls are like the author of this thread.

Church territory-church rules

what rules? - have you seen them codified? - 'church' rules?? - was it church to impose them?- what is wrong in wearing shorts for a church service?- I don't get it

yes - dress code is stupid - and that is anywhere not only in church - the only areas I think dress code makes sense is military and the like

The Bible's rules about dress cannot be applied directly to today's situation. Attending church in a cloak, tunic, sandals and a turban or veil would cause quite a disruption in most churches! But the general principles of modesty and propriety can be applied. We should dress for public worship in a way that is generally considered appropriate. Standards of dress change over time and are different from church to church, but we should avoid any style of dress that is offensive or sends a message opposing the church community's values.

A thought: Clothes say something about what we think, what we value. They also influence how we behave and feel. That our culture has become so casual about everything says something about us. I cannot exactly articulate it but it seems to say, “nothing is really all that important.” But that is not true. Going to God’s house IS important. Being ministered to by the King of Kings and Lord of Lords is astounding. Casual attire in these circumstances is simply inappropriate if we really think about what we are doing, where we are going and who it is we will meet. It does not necessarily follow that we must wear tuxedos and formal gowns. But decent semi-formal attire seems wholly appropriate. Sunday is special, God’s House is special. Some things really ARE important and our clothing and demeanor ought to reflect this truth

Going to God’s house IS important.

God is everywhere - the only reason why Jesus encouraged people to meet up was for the sake of coming together (in God's unity) - are those bad looks at people who are dressed differently what Jesus would preach? is it a true Christian way?

Sunday is special, God’s House is special.

I don't think they are in most thinkable respects

Church territory-church rules. If you don't like it simply don't go there.

I have to agree with that. I like most traditions.

Less seriuously: Respect other peoples' obsessions or superstitions, no matter how ridiculous they are. Lots of people like to gather every Sunday to compare their clothing and then suddenly someone less aware comes wearing... shorts. That's not cool.

Of course *that* message rendered their religion useless, so that's the *real* reason as to why he got crucified.

Or... you need to start with something big and controversial to run a religion?

what rules? - have you seen them codified?

The unwritten book;). It is a custom, as in most Greek monasteries or churches there's a sign for tourists to put something on before entering (cover shoulders and wear long pants/skirts. If you don't have anything - they'd rent you scarfs etc. I think this is fair actually.

The Bible's rules about dress cannot be applied directly to today's situation.

Hahah, put it on today for an hour, walk down a street and they'll put you in a mental hospital for observation:)

Can't argue with that.

Wearing clothes or whatever kind of ornament doesn't say *anything*. What we *do* says something about what we think and what we value.

How could things have gone so wrong!?! What a terrible tragedy! A stara babka looked at a brit in shorts in disgust! God help us all!

It seems like you have to be british or you're wrong...

If you don't like the dress code in a place of worship, then simply DON'T GO THERE!

Do you also complain about mosques requiring people to take off their shoes?

Stop being so arrogant.

Gumishu, if you are an atheist, then of course you will have this view

says something about what we think and what we value

Being dressed appropriately, being concerned about your personal hygiene and following rules of dress code. All falls into the above.

He's an unsure agnostic ;) ;) Unsure of being unsure ;)

Warsz, a kilt doesn't always cover your knees so would it be acceptable?
