Things we enjoyed as kids in Poland

Do you remember guys the bubble gum "Donald"? with a short story in it?

and then it was the "Turbo" gum

I still remember this taste of my childhood!

We used to have the "penny bubbly" over here:

This was back in the days when shops used to have coin-operated sweet machines outside their premises... can you imagine how long those would stay on the wall these days?? lol

Wasnt the "Turbo" gum the one with car stickers? I still remember the He-Man action figures and Matchbox soldiers as well as russian made metal tank models.

Also the polish made hand painted soldiers, i still have an army of 1200~ Uhlans.

standing 3 hours in line in freezing cold to buy a kilo of sugar, ahh memories, nothing better to do after 7 hours in school.

We had that too when I was a kid :) Don't know if they still sell them, though. We also had Bazooka gum...With Joe Bazooka, I believe it was:

I remember both "Donald" and "Turbo" and me and my brother collected those short stories ;)
When we were kids there were also those weird orange drinks in transparent bags which you drank with a straw - it was quite a feat to put this straw in the bag ;D

I remember oranżada in glass bottles and "Śnieżka" ice creams: Polish Food from the Socializm Era

And I loved to eat (or rather lick) "Vibovit" instead of drinking it ;D

Some time later, I think in the 90's there were also those candies and we ate a lot of them:

I remember standing in a queue with my grandad, who was trying to buy some bread. By the time we got to the front - two hours later - it was sold out! So much for "the good old days"!



I wouldn't buy them if we could - they would remind me of Tusk - ugh! lol

Does anyone remember when Polish towns used to be full of street sellers who sold some kind of red-coloured drink? When did all that stop, then?

yes, sold very cold and so delicious... and this taste! i remember!
and first potatoes chips, which tasted like heaven!

Did you know that all those chewing gums for kids like Donald and quite a few other brands are actually Dutch? Maple Leaf is an Amsterdam chewing gum company which produces these brands. I didn't know that either up until just now...I just read it as I initially thought ML was a Canadian brand, with the maple leaf and all. But no, NO! It is the black magic man from Amsterdam :)

When I came first time to Poland in 1989, I remembering people buying milk (actually white water) in plastic bags.
And me on the border having to change per day of my visa 36 DM in (then) worthless zlotys.
And having to buy coupons to get diesel :)
And the Pewex & Balaton shops (Was there actually a difference between them?). I remember buying in Sanok Belgian meat pie in a Pewex shop. If you look back at it - pure Monty Python.

made in mleczarnia in Krakow, i was there to see around with my class in middle school (one of the girls dad worked there) and we got many bambinos which we ate all in the tram on the way back home...lol

and then they closed it ... :( very sad there is not even one picture of them online... :(

Now that you mention it - I did see it in the supermarket lately. Cannot really see people buying it.

I remember being given something absolutely vile that supposed to imitate the chocolate but had less cocoa replaced with a fatty blob instead. It stuck to my gums and teeth and got me shut up for a couple of hours which obviously pleased my family. I'm not sure if they produce it any more but...and I couldn't believe it myself,Sainsburys does a non-added sugar 'chocolate' which is as chewy as the Polish one! so if you miss it here in Poland I'm keen to supply lol

It is a milk niepasteryzowane so you have to boil it first.

Who remembers orenżada w proszku for 50 groszy? I remember spending half of my weekly allowance on that.

OK but in which way is it different to the "swieże mleko" I buy in bottles (and which stays good for like max. 2 weeks) ?
