Poland is a civilized country so why assume barbaric acts like this? we don't sell live fish to be eaten in America, if so PETA would be all over you. These fish are taken home by the Poles and thrown in a bathtub and nobody cares how they die. It is cruel and stupid. Many people don't know the first thing about animal care and here they take one home only to be eaten a few days later. Don't they feel any remorse, any bonds with this animal while under their care? How do they kill it? Who kills it? With what?

Like I said, Poland is a civilized country...so I thought

It is cruel and stupid.

Tygrys, you have too much animosity towards our brothers and sisters. It's a fish and Polish tradtion.

agree, it is your tradition but is it really that much to expect from you guys to at least sell it already killed instead to make it suffer?

I should point out that I am English but I have lived in Poland 13 years. I am not anti Polish tradition. I am anti cruelty when it is not needed

There are many fish farms all over europe, maybe this is the place you should first start, if I understand you correctly, your point is that each fish should have an equal amount of space in storage, as an example 1m3 per two live-carp. ?

Then we can watch with smiles on our faces come december 2011, as "Britpol1" is led off to the airport by the Polish " Rinsette brigade". Just live life " Britpol1" and let the Indigenous peeps, have their traditions in peace. If you don't like it you know where the door is - close it on the way out.

Has a carp ever in human history cared about man? No. Would a carp rescue me, say if I were drowning? No. Would a carp eat my remains if I drowned in a pond? Yes. If intelligent enough to make the choice of helping me live, or letting me drown, I believe the carp would let me go under, and then snack on me.

No, the carp can go screw itself, a selfish and cruel beast. I don't like carp, but I think I'm going to go buy one now and sling it out the window to feed the local strays.

why can't it be sold already killed

Because it isn't fresh and not nearly as healthy. Meat is much, much healthier if it is very fresh. It has the highest concentration of nutrients and isn't contaminated by bacteria.

This is just another example of liberals trying to impose their ideology on everyone. People have been eating fish for thousands of years. Fish exist in the wild in stagnant ponds, very gross and polluted, full of nasty stuff that humans don't want to touch. Disgusting places, they live there for years and years before being caught and eaten. You going to go out there and get all the fish from an icky, stagnant pond and relocate them?

Doesnt sound very nice, but,Im afraid I pick up on a few things.
If a Pole who came here 13 years ago wanting to ban Morris Dancing, much as I might agree with that Pole Id probably come down on the side of "well, its our tradition mate".

We are far to far removed in this day and age from the realities of where food comes from. If its meat, sorry, but at one time it was probably a cute and fluffy little thing skipping around a field.

For me,it feels far more "honest" to kill the animal you are about to eat yourself, and after all,who knows how many Carp do get under the skin of people at Christmas and end up being snuck back into the Vistula ? ;)

,sorry, but at one time it was probably a cute and fluffy little thing skipping around a field.

A fish isn't cute or fluffy. It's a basic food and one of the healthiest for us humans. It's better for people to consume, when compared to pork or beef.

It has those omega threes, EFAs which are essential for good health.
Fish is better when it's fresh, just been caught and cooked. Why try to ruin a good thing with something that's been processed?

If you want to go on a crusade, why not stop the slaughter of more complex beings, like pigs, cattle or chickens?
Pigs and cattle, especially, are mammals like us. A cow's head is bigger than a human's. Does this mean the brain is bigger?

Deer are pretty sophisticated too, so are rabbits.
A fish is a simple, straightforward food source, not too different from corn or soy.
ShawnH  8 | 1488

Except corn or soy can't be farmed to extinction. Over fishing can topple the balance of the ecosystem, with grave impact for other species.

A fish farm is a good way to prevent over harvesting. If it were not for farming, these plant species could very well be picked to the point of extinction by now.

Results in contamination of the wild varieties of fish, typically from the meds the fish recieve in their feed. Typically they are genetically modified as starter stock as well.

I prefer wild fish to be honest.

A wild fish is going to be harvested to the point of non existence. You have the shortest possible fishing seasons. Neo-con libertarians want them done away with. If those fishing seasons were lengthened or didn't exist, the fish wouldn't exist for long, either.

Not if international quotas were established and enforced. Pricing needs to be reflected in the market place based on supply and demand. Cows are a wonderful source of protein.

Not if international quotas were established and enforced.

That already exists for some species, especially whales. Officially, hunting them is forbidden by the IWC. Unofficially, the Japanese and a few other whaling nations are allowed to hunt them in quotas for scientific study. There is a loophole that lets them sell the meat they garner from any whale they capture for scientific research or tissue gathering for samples.

They have short seasons for other fish, and it's easy to figure out why.
Millions of small fishing units.
How do you regulate these with quotas?

Torpedoes!

:-)
PlasticPole  7 | 2641

Haha, so what you do is torpedo any small fishing unit you encounter.

Has a carp ever in human history cared about man?

this is a pretty dumb statement convex, you have to admit.

Following your logic, no other creatures are worth living because they never cared about humans.

A fish has a right to live so long as it never gets eaten by another species. If it can avoid getting eaten, by all means, let it live!

Actually in the First World if it's meat it probably wasn't skipping around a field, but rather standing knee deep in its own feces penned up in a factory farm stall while being fed antibiotics so that is won't get too sick before it's fat enough to slaughter.
