@Ironside

History is a complex thing. The Macedonians were seen as a greek tribe and state. Just as Athens, Sparta or Thebes. There was heavy internal rival ideas back then. You can put it all under the label Hellenistic world.

What do you mean with "what happened to Byzantine Empire? Its a part of hellenistic history and a very sucessful one.

For many hundred years it was center of science and art, while Europe was mostly in dark ages. It also kept Islam out of Europe for many hundred years.

Unfortunately the rest of Europe betrayed our ancestors when we needed help. This betrayal from the catholics led to my country be under occupation and opression for 368 yers from the Turks until we broke free after heavy fighting in 1821.

But we live in 2018. I´m only 23 years old and i dont hold young catholics accountable for their ancestors being false, cowardly and evil snakes.

As for language, i propably will try to learn some easy sentences, like who i´m and where i come from.

The region they live on i called Carantania. Thats the name they can use.

I'm sure they will be thrilled to know that another country gets to decide what they can call themselves...

The Catholics will also be happy to hear that their ancestors were false, cowardly and evil.
And the guy asks about Polish prejudice ...
Dear Op,
You will be fine as long as you avoid trouble makers and don't get into trouble yourself.

another countries name.

names aren't property in that sense, the Greek reactions to the name of the country Macedonia gives Greece a very bad international reputation and makes them look like chauvinistic bullies

Catholics will also be happy to hear that their ancestors were false, cowardly and evil.

he's just a regular Good Will Ambassador!

...well, to be fair.

Macedonians are lovely people as well, I've been there and found them to be very friendly, even if the country is very surreal.

@mafketis

FYROM not only stole a name but also made claims on greek areas / provinces which hold the name Macedonia. Thats where the fun ends.
Stick to the topic of the thread please

Aleksandar Makedonski remains an enduring fascination. They portray him in all sorts, they portray him as a Greek. I personally think that he was not a Greek, that he was a Macedonian of Slavic blood - by no means Greek. We know that he with the Greeks often spoke through an interpreter. Also the Greeks in his army and vice-versa when someone adresses Greek troops he does that with the help of an interpreter. His army seemed to have around 37,000 soldiers out of which only approximately 7 thousand were Hellenes (Greeks) the rest were Macedonians, Thracians, Illyrians and so on. And with such a relatively small army, you know 37 thousand people, which battles for 12 years more or less in the same composition, he succeded to conquer all those kingdoms and empires and create one state. However, considering how it quickly formed, after his death it seems that it also quickly fell apart on 4 parts his Empire, and so on. One large star which is even mentioned in the Bible through a verse Aleksandar Makedonski is mentioned as a Unifier of the World, as a Master, an Emperor over Emperors.

please stick to the topic everyone

Slavs did not live there and arrived almost 1000 years later. He was a hellenistic Macedon.

To say otherwise is an gigantic insult and my country made clear it sees this as action of war. Thats teh reason why FYROM starts to give by.

And i expect polish people to respect our history.

You dont want people to say "polish concentration camps". Thats ok but i expect you too stay at reality.

Slavs reached the area around the year 600 after christ.

Besie that Alexander needed no "translator". The language spoken there was a greek dialect

Take a cold. Shower. you're not in your country but on the American forum.
If you can talk ahistorical BS about Catholics and being offensive to the brim, you should have a good grace to listen to other people views. Its called freedom of speech.

I see insulting Greece, our history and greek historical persons as extremly offensive as well. One thing we greeks have in our blood is, that we dont accept insults.

Being prickly and easily offended will not win you any friends in Poland. Maybe you should reconsider.

@Marino_Kat
And what exactly offended you?
Is there maybe anything in your own posts that others may find offensive? What do you think?
By the way, there are Poles, Americans, Serbs and Brits (did I miss anyone? ) answering your post.
Generally speaking, I assume it's not the first time you're going to go abroad. Just like everywhere else, stay away from trouble and political discussions. We can see you're proud of your country but be open to other views.

Learn something about Poland while here.
Tip: talking about Polish concentration camps won't win you too many friends here.

When someone claimed wrong things about Alexander and our Province Macedonia and also sided with FYROM, i got angry. I have nothing against catholics, even so our history with them is not that positive.

I dont think people start such discussions when there.

11 Feb 2018 /  #52
Before you get angry again, keep in mind Poland is predominantly Catholic. I'm not sure you want to hang out with such a cowardly and evil bunch ;)

Not to mention, you'll see lots of Catholic churches, nuns and priests in Kraków.
Some may ask you about Macedonia, although there's little possibility. If so, be more diplomatic ...
And don't mention Polish death camps.
To sum up, hold your horses. Be open minded.
Don't complain about feeling insulted while insulting others. It may get you into trouble.

If someone mentions Macedonia i would simply say that this is for a greek like someone would say polish deathcamps, to show that person that this is a sensitive matter.

In general i believe it is always a sensitive thing to debate foreign politics.

As i said, i have nothing against catholics.

Are there orthodox churches in Poland as well or only catholic ones?

Also whats favorite food there?
kaprys  3 | 2076
11 Feb 2018 /  #54
There are some Orthodox churches but mainly in Eastern Poland and in other parts of the country there are some but mainly attended by Ukrainians and Russians.

I'm sorry I'm ignorant about it, I don't know if it's the same branch of Christianity as Greek Orthodox churches. Afaik, they use the Old Church Slavonic, so probably not.

You need to do some research if you want to attend service.
I just recall seeing Catholic churches and synagogues in Kraków but it's a rather big city so there might be some Greek Orthodox churches.

Seams that this Marino_Kat came to this forum to spread lies about Polish history while seek to feel safe in Poland.

I dont think someone from Poland should interfer in this discussion between Greece and FYROM.

There was time in history when Poland was ready to defend her wider strategic interests but, at this moment, Poland isn`t ready do try again. So in the meanwhile, we Serbians disturbing the calm waters. Somebody must.

Slavs arrived in the area they live now in FYROM only in the year 600 after christ. That is a fact...... Our emperor Maurikios ended their settlements and kicked them out

Hitler wouldn`t tell it better. Not to mention that Albanians thinks the same and I see trend of Greek-Albanian strategic unity on this. See, it is grave insult to us Slavs when somebody falsifies our history and repeat western European propaganda about later arrival of Slavs in Europe.

As for your Maurikios, yes he kicked native Slavs from their native region.

My dear if you want to analyze old Eastern Roman sources (as someone named it Byzantine- what is newer term invented in last 200 years), you will see that Duka using term Thracians and Tribali when speak about Serbians.

What I want to tell you, please feel free to think of Slavs, whenever old sources speak about Sarmatians, Thracians, Dacians, Iliryans, etc. Its all about Slavs and it is grave insult to me whenever somebody stealing our history.

I heard how Greek PM Alexis Tsipras (for whom I do have respect) diplomatically speak of topic. It was on TV. He sad that in time of Alexander of Mecedon, Macedonian ethnicity wasn`t developed as it was case with Athenian ethnicity of the same period.

Sure, it wasn`t developed in that sense. Rather in some other sense. There were people that already were ethnic Greeks (like Athens) but, there was also Hellenic cultural/linguistic movement/influence that was spread much wider then it was Greek ethnicity (similar to Roman influences outside of Rome and Italy). Many non-Greeks were exposed to that influence. So, Macedonia, too. And not only Macedonia.

At the time Greeks didn't consider Macedonians to be Greek, nether consider Alexander a proper Greek.

Exactly. Bottom line is that Macedonians were Thracians/Sarmatians (ie Slavs) who were exposed to Hellenism by the Greeks. In some extent Macedonians were Hellenized. And that`s it. But, Macedonians were not ethnic Greeks. Its well known historical fact.

It means that Greeks influenced Macedonian Sarmatians (ie Slavs) but, Macedonians are right when claim their Macedonian ethnicity (because they say they are Slavs- ie Sarmatians/ie Thracians). It would be honest from the Greeks to accept that. Especially when we have in mind that nobody denies Hellenic cultural influences on Macedonians.

Also, on the other side, it would be interesting to seek out for Sarmatian/Thracian influences on Greeks. Who knows, maybe we one day found out how are Greeks themselves in fact of Thracian/Sarmatian (ie Slavic) origin and that way most directly brothers to Poles, Macedonians and Serbians. Wouldn`t that be cute.

Why are people selfish, even when comes to ancient history.

But, Macedonians were not ethnic Greeks

Well, it is not so clear cut and dry. As a matter of fact, they might be well 'ethnic' Greeks. The point being at the time their ethnicity counted for little for the Hellenic world. Count, culture, way of life that what where considered to be Greek at the time.

Anyway it is immaterial as ancient Greeks have very little indeed in common with todays Greek. They're the same only in their own propaganda..

If anything they're more of a Romans, as they called themselves in Greek - Romans.

Ethnically Crow my Serbian friend - who cares? Are you Jewish?

You joking, Irone, don`t you. I don`t hide who I am. My ethnicity and my religious and spiritual backgrounds are well known on this forum, many times told. I have nothing to hide.

You, you also din`t hide yourself. You have religious background first and then ethnicity. As I remember well, that`s what you said.

But, my friend, that religious background of yours won`t save you from those who hate your ethnicity. Sure, haters would like to kill people like you are only once, while they would like to kill Serbians twice or trice. Is that kind of advantage for you? No, its not. As long as you don`t give up from your ethnicity absolutely, you don`t differ much from people like me, no matter being your ethnicity first or second place.

Well, it is not so clear cut and dry.

Nothing is cut and dry. That`s why is antiquity denied to Slavs. So that others have freedom to take what they want.

But, not for long and especially not to the eternity.

If anything they're more of a Romans, as they called themselves in Greek - Romans.

With this I agree. You know how Italians say when compare themselves with Greeks. They say `una faca, una rasa` (one face, one race).

What is interesting, that`s what is White in Italians and Greeks coming from their Sarmatian/Thracian (ie Slavic) basic gene pool. But, they both feel shame of it and deny it. Both, Italians and Greeks feel superior and looks down on Slavs. And Greeks are Orthodox and Italians are Catholic. But they feel same for Slavs. For all Slavs. We are all infidels to them, no matter are we Catholic or Orthodox. See, my friend, that`s the point. They are united when comes to Slavs.

I'm sorry I'm ignorant about it, I don't know if it's the same branch of Christianity as Greek Orthodox churches.

Every Orthodox church is autonomous that is 'autocephalic'.

Some may ask you about Macedonia

In Poland the name 'Macedonia' is associated either with the former Yugoslavian republic of Macedonia or with ancient 'Macedonia' where Alexander Macedoński was born and whence he set off to conquer vast lands including Egypt and Persia and reaching India. The concept of aegean Macedonia is largely unknown and that land would simply be considered Greece.

We know that he [Aleksandar Makedonski] with the Greeks often spoke through an interpreter.

And how do we know that?

Ull be fine as a greek. Poles can tell rhe difference between greeks and arabs/africans which tends to be the groups that a lot of poles dont want economic migrants from. Tourists students etc no problem. 15 years ago youd never see a black guy in wroclaw krakow and even rarely warsaw outside the airport n business district. Hardly any tourisys back then. Now theres a lot of west africans coming to vacation. Not so much arabs north africans or other middle easterners. Poles like kurds but not so much other muslim groups.
