Is it me or do people "seem" to live longer in Poland? Life expectancy among Poles.

9-5? More like 7.30 to 8.30, when commuters can't get a seat on packed buses because they are taken by 99 year olds who really MUST do all their shopping during the Monday rush hour.

Seriously, Poles do tend to look quite old for their years. Bad diet, smoking, alcohol and dressing in an unflattering way all contribute.

I didnt notice it,mind you, Im from Doncaster,our 30 year olds look 50.....................of course Im the exception.....some lass the other day thought I was 27, I could have kissed her :)

I have quite a few friends and acquaintances who are ladies who are mature, no longer kids (I'm being tactful here). In more than one country. I've noticed that in Poland, they are more likely to look young due to facelifts. They are much cheaper than in the UK and becoming very popular.. They work too. I also know a couple of Polish men who've had them. Of the ladies I know who could be called elderly, none of those who are in Poland have had noticeable lifting, but several in the UK have. Must be a generational thing.

Good point. In some countries the elderly can only get their travel concession after rush hour. How many times have you seen a working person stand up all the way so as to give their seat to some old one who could have waited half an hour?

Where I live the old ladies look older than their age but they're much more active than their blue-rinsed UK counterparts. My 86-year-old neighbour still tends her vegetable garden. Can't imagine someone that old doing the same in UK.

No,it must be the same the world round, those who can afford to take it easy or spend money on vanity can look great compared to those without the finacial ability or motive.

My High School had an intake roughly split between a pit village and a market town, guess which ones now look far older than mid 30s and those who look younger.....................

Same here - and on Friends reunited you can really see the difference. In Poland there was a lot of heavy industry and hard agricultural work. That must really age people. I know an 87 year old in Warsaw who's still working, But he's a teetotal non-smoking intellectual and not a heavy labourer.


My dad's 80 and leads walks in the Pennines for a pensioners' group. The 60-somethings complain they can't keep up.

my nana is 91- she lives in New Brunswick in her own apartment. My husbands grandfather is 92- he lives in Sopot, also on his own.

I stand by my statement. Generally speaking Europeans look older than North Americans- but North Americans are fatter.

That has it's role too. French women say that at a certain age they have to choose between a young face/fat arse or sagging face/small arse.

Americans die younger. On average, the richest Americans have poorer health at age 50 than the poorest British.

So maybe your don't see as many old Americans becuase they are in hospital or a coffin.

you are absolutely right. I don't know when your last visit to Poland was- but the people are getting fatter here too. And at an alarming rate. it seems to have started right when Poland joined the EU.

But if you only buy fresh fruits and veg and properly raised meats than you will be fine. Dairy in North America (for the masses) is not good quality- bottom line, know what you put in your body.

I had to reply to this *************** some here said *no,they just look older*.Yes,we live longer,and it comes from a real Pole.I am coming from a young looking family,my granfather is over 85(refuse to tell age),and he exercise,swim,drive,and even travel from time to time,his 2 sisters too,my mom(his daugther),look younger than she is,and is very active.My grandma is just few years younger than my granpa,she also swims,and does a lot of stuff.So yea we Poles live longer.Also it ****** me off how u said *unhealthy diet*.Where u saw unealthy diet?.Mcdonalds?.We drink a lot of kefirs,soy milks,beries,musli,we eat a lot of soups,beets,egs,potatoes,surowki,yogurts,vegies,carrots(and we do many differen mix),.We have a lot of bazars with arent in many countries(are mostly in Estern Europe),where we buy fresh beries,greens.Also see how many succes we have in bodybuilding,and even more in strong man.3third country with the most of titles.I lift,and even 2 of our hereos here arent singers,or celebraties,but a muscle athletes.I lift my self,we live longer,and better.I like how some fags are commenting with out even knowing,pathetic.Cheers.

Waaaah ! Quit saying polish men die in 50s!!! I'll have to figure how to extend my man's life!

And my Great & Grandparents that died natural, lived to around 98-100, My mums generation was hard hit with accidents.

As for me? I am North American from EU (N/E EU at that) roots not too far up in most branches. I can run to plump side but I have a diet that makes my physician whine. (tho lately I have been stricter in portion control to be example because my youngest is getting quite portly recently). I look pretty snappy for my age, but I think my family is mutants so may not count in the average statistics (not only do most of us live well past 80-even the drinkers.. but one side that I have taken from, women don't even hit menopause til well past 60)

IMO : the generations of my dad that looked old , often lived a stressed life of hard work & toil and war/oppression..and the ones my age and younger are the sterotypical "spent youth"s. drinking, drugs, smoking , tanning and hedonist diet just took their youth

Blah, who needs to live long anyway? Much of the increase in life expectancy is spent just taking pills that allow you to be sick for longer but not die. Sure, it'd be nice to be active and limber at 80, but chances are you won't be, and your brain will be ever so slightly mushier every time the abusive black nurse in the care home comes to change your bed sheets.

There's all that hooplah about tobacco, alcohol and hydrogenated fats giving you lung/liver/heart disease. They're pretty damn good at preventing old age, though. We're all going to die anyway, and unless you win the genetic lottery and are exceedingly lucky, you're probably better off kicking the bucket when you're 70 than spending another 20 years being increasingly sick, immobile and lonely.

didnt they suffer enough under communism, i'd have thought so, lets not begrudge them a slower pace or rest and peace of mind now if thats what they have (either because of or in spite of po governance!)

really? well families here in Polska i know of suffered just that at 5 years after retirement at most, and back of fag packet average is about 3-4 yrs. not smokers or drinkers.

looking for longevity? go to Japan and Spain where life expectancy really is worth mentioning

The statistics can easily be explained by the heavy drinking (even in the workplace) by men combined with some other things such as men driving like absolute numbskulls and doing downright stupid/dangerous things.

Furthermore, not a lot of people in Poland reach that age, especially men. No proper diet, no proper medical care, hard living conditions don't help and Poles look much older than Westerners at same age (when 50 and older)....

I think a lot of them live hard lives through just poor choices. I was reading some forum a while ago by some woman who regarded her mother-in-law as a selfish old cow because she wouldn't take early retirement so she could look after the kids - even though early retirement means losing everything in the OFE fund and a few more years of pension contributions. Disgusting, don't you think? I bet the daughter-in-law would be first to complain when she was expected to support her in old age after several years of unpaid child care.
