I always considered russians super friendly. I domt kmow about the ukrainians but russians on vacation in various countries including some i met who lived in palo alto were always friendly.

Why do you say that? Interpersonal behavior that is expected in the Anglosphere is considered strange elsewhere. That's the main reason why Brits and Americans believe that the French, Dutch, Germans and Poles are rude for example.

Maybe Pawian doesn't do hikes. I find it ignorant and highly intimidating when people don't greet me back on an isolated beach.

Even if it is in a way that is alien to them.
Poles adapt quite quickly.

Why would they have to change? Just because a certain behavior is the norm in Anglo-American countries doesn't mean that others have to copy it. Think of the queueing in Britain. Time-honored tradition. Now try the same in France and you will see how far your manners get you. After 10,000 people have skipped the line you will capitulate... :)

I have, and anybody who has would know there are beaches where you might not meet people for 15 kilometres, because they are only open at certain times because of NATO exercises.

I see you are mistaking Sahara or Gobi Deserts with a Polish beach. Sorry, even secluded beaches in Poland don`t allow you to be so intrusive.. :):)


That`s a useless statement, you can walk for 50 km without meeting anybody on the beach and that still doesn`t mean anything because it is enough to turn right or left, cross the dunes and the wooded strip of land and you will run into locals in a nearby village.

There are secluded places especially in winter, early spring or late autumn.
Still some would think it odd or slightly dangerous if a stranger said hello to them in such circumstances. And if we're talking about being friendly why such a reaction just because someone doesn't greet you back? Not very friendly or sociable really. A smile or a nod would be ok, too. But perhaps my perspective is different as I'm a woman.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the British (far more than other peopels IME) are driven to anger (or even blind rage) at norms of behavior that are different from their own....

And it's only (some) long time Brits in Poland who are perversely proud of their poor knowledge of Polish....

I don't know what that means mafketis. If you have cracked the B1 barrier, then good for you. Have a cigar. For myself, I reached A2 level Polish after the first year here and have never improved my language skills apart from vocabulary, because I don't write in Polish. That would have required study and effort for a reading and writing learner, and I'm as lazy as Boris Johnson allegedly is in that category. Why would anyone be proud of being lazy? That's just the way they are in some respects.

Sorry Pawian, but it's basic manners and common courtesy to 'salute' as we say in Ireland, a stranger whom you encounter in a situation such as the beach one that Doug describes.

After a few years most people learn to deal with a foreign country as it is (and not as a deformed version of their home country).

And in this instance ie on the beach or a country walk, we're not talking about trying to engage anybody in conversation, merely acknowledging their presence in a pleasant manner.

In the US, it's normal to have a 30-second small talk where it's possible, including checkouts. If you can include a joke, it's even better. My best was at an IRS office when I told the agent that whatever she is paid she is underpaid. You should have seen a smile on her face. Self-serving but effective.

In the US even while registering as a sex offender people next to you that arent will small talk. ive seen it done. Some lady was small talking with thi dude regsitering and she was there I think to file some report or something.

In Ireland 'to salute' a person comes from the French word 'salut' which can be used as hello or goodbye, a bit like czesć in Polish. We have some peculiarities in Hiberno-English stemming from the Norman colonization back in the 12 century. Incredible how we've retained them for 800 years! If you say that a person failed to salute you, it means they didn't acknowledge you either by a word or gesture.

Be it alcohol, drugs, tobacco, yes, even sure, an addiction is a disease. Look the word up in the dictionary.

Under some circumstances, like in prisons, failure to show respect by briefly acknowledging another guy's presence can be deadly.
Short of that extreme, it's smart not to be a standoffish a-hole in bars, w "silowniach", and wherever booze or testosterone are in oversupply.

When it comes to places with booze in Warsaw it is the females who are rude *****. Especially at this Latino music bar place called Sam Escobar. They are total ******* and users there. They routinely walk in front of you and shove you out of the way if you're male and I guess the people take it there or they act like there is no repercussions for their behavior.

This is when Islam starts looking better and better....
