Will an English bought TV work In Poland?

A couple of friends of mine have made the decision to leave the UK and go back to Poland in the new year.
They will be taking the belongings they've bought here in the UK including their flat screen TV which is less than a year old.

I haven't said anything to them yet, but I'm not sure if their TV will work in Poland?
I thought I'd read something on here about this but I can't find anything.
If I'm right, I don't think it's just a question of the different voltage, and if this is the case can anyone explain why it won't work so I can let them know.

Thanks in advance :)

It will work just fine (although it will need a new plug or a converter).

Happy to help.

Now that I remember, I bought No. 2 step-daughter a TV for Christmas last year on the web for a nice price. When it arrived it had a British plug on it which one unscrewed part of so the three-pin ending fell off and the standard Polish two-pin thing was revealed.

If it doesn't support the MPEG-4 standard, it will not directly receive terrestrial TV in Poland. Only with external tuners. I don't know what is it like now, but a few years ago the standard in UK was MPEG-2.

Voltage is the same (or almost the same, within the safety limit - exactly 230 V), only a plug is different. You need to use an adaptor or cut off the original plug and install a new one. Or change the power cable, if it is possible to disconnect it from the TV.

Nonsense!

It's all a bit meaningless to me I'm afraid, but this sentence is taken from Wiki:

the UK uses "MPEG2 + MHEG5 + DVB-T" for SD and "MPEG4 + MHEG5 + DVB-T2" for HDTV,

So presuming they have an HDTV, it should support the MPEG-4 standard needed to receive terrestrial TV in Poland?

Older TV sets had HD but couldn't receive it by means of terrestrial TV. Only from external sources.

If it receives HD signal directly from traditional aerial, it will work in Poland.

I'll have to ask them about that.
I'm pretty sure it's connected to a dish.
Thanks very much for help :)

Maybe just give us the model of this TV and we will check.

Kpc21 is correct, British tv was initially broadcast in mpeg2 during the Digital roll out now it is broadcast in MPEG 2 and the euro standard mpeg4. A basic rule of thumb is that if it says HD on the TV it will receive mpeg4 and thus work in Poland.

It's an LG42LB585V 42" HD smart TV.

Ok, thanks Barney, seems as if it should work then.

It's most probably made in Poland then.

Didn't realise LG had a manufacturing plant in Poland.
Found a site which listed LG models made in Poland but the model in question isn't on the list.
General consensus seems to be that it will work though so at least they don't have to sell it and buy another one.

Nothing in the data sheets about this.

About that when the TV has "HD" label it must have MPEG4 I am not so convinced. Older TVs had "HD" labels (Full HD or HD Ready, depending on the screen resolution), but they could only use HD signal from external sources, like Blu-Ray player or satellite receiver.

Even if it doesn't receive Polish TV (which is quite unlikely), you can always plug an external TV receiver by HDMI. The price of such one is about 120 PLN.

As far as I'm aware, it's a pretty recent model, so maybe it has an integrated HD tuner? Although I think in the UK some HD channels are broadcast through cable/satellite services. I have no idea how this works in Poland.

But Harry bought his stepdaughter a TV and he seems to think it will work ( once plug has been changed ).

OK, I'll try to explain all this to them, thanks for help.

From what I understand Europe uses the 220-240 volts a.c. at 50 hz Therefore the t.v. that was bought in Britain will work in Poland. The only problem you will have is to use an adaptor for the difference in electrical plugs that are used. If they were to try and bring here to North America, it would not be worth the cost or effort to bring it here since we use 120 volts a.c. at 60 hz.

As for reception of programming signals, that I can not answer of what type of equipment you will need.

This TV works with the voltage 100-240 V AC, 50/60 Hz. So it would work in the US too. You underestimate it :)
