DOCTORS ( NFZ ) AND - PRESCRIPTIONS in Poland (Krakow)

Does anybody know of a good NFZ registered doctor in Krakow who; A) speaks English; and B) accepts patients under the 'European Health Insurance Card' system? Prefereably close to the centre, but failing that anywhere within reasonable travelling distance.

Also, can anybody advise me of prescription availability and costs. I require some pain relief medication Co-codamol ( 500mg paracetamol with 30mg of codeine ) which is a prescription only medication in UK. Is it available in Poland, and does it have the same 'prescription only' status here too?

Thanks

Hi Phil_C!

500mg paracetamol with 30mg of codeine

you can buy it without prescription but separately in two tablets, and rather 15mg codeine/tab.
In these circumstances it would be better not to combine them yourself but get a prescription. I know one doctor who can handle English but unfortunately the reception where you book a visit - doesn't.

My advice is: contact CM LIM or Luxmed where they speak English for sure.

Thank you for all that excellent advice Olaf. Sounds like a good starting point. You would be amazed at how many places around the world regard Co-codamol - with its 500mg paracetamol and 30mg of codeine, as being almost akin to a couple of grams of heroin...and accordingly make it almost impossible to buy.

Anyway, much appreciated...and still open to any other recommendations if anybody has any.

there is Solpadeine - 500 mg paracetamol + 8mg codeine and Antidol 500 mg paracetamol + 15 mg codeine availabale without prescription

if you are not alergic to paracetamol just take 2 tablets of Antidol to have a similar effect to your own prescriptions

there are other such mixes but I have no idea if any of these contain more than 15 mg of codeine per 500mg of paracetamol - you need to ask around in pharmacies - just use it written down on a piece of paper if you can't speak any Polish (paracetamol + kodeina - and doses per 'tabletka') - though spelled the same as in English the word paracetamol gets to be pronounced differently in Polish

as for codeine - it used to be sold as a separate drug before in Poland but the time's long gone - now only sold in mixtures as far as I know

EDIT: I have just found there is Antidol 20 pro which has 20mg of codeine per 500 mg of paracetamol - but I am not sure if it is available without prescription

Thanks for all your help and advice Gumishu! I will certainly try it...and see what happens. Antidol sounds as though it's getting nearer....LOL. Maybe a couple of them will do the trick. Now if I could only get hold of some Vi codin ( sorry not allowed to say the word LOL ) that 'House MD' is addicted to....I'd be laughing! ( literally )
