Let`s compare prices of services and products in Poland

They have whole life savings, flats, houses which they give out their children.

As many have pointed out, if you take housing costs out of the equation, Poland isn't exactly an expensive country.

How can they have any savings since everyone knows Poles are dirt poor and make $100/month not to mention that during comunism they were making $20/month???

My grandma had some savings that she was even able to give some properties to her children.

Besides that I've noticed that nearly everyone has aunt/uncle/brother/sister/grandma/grandpa/pal/lover/daughter/son/broth er-in-law in Germany/Canada/USA/UK/Sweeden/Norway or even na Kajmanach ;P

Actually do you know anybody who doesn't have a member of his family abroad? My grandma inherit few years ago quite nice money (besides those she saved on her own) after death of her childless unmarried sister who was living for 50 years in Germany (RFN).

My friend has grandma in Sweeden (no she's not Sweedish) but if the family was in need there always was the lovely granny ;)

beer is 3-4 PLN (shop), 7-10 PLN (pub)
food - the cheapest whole meal will be 10-20 PLN but you can eat much more expensive one

Be careful the Poles will use Euro2012 to try to make a quick buck from anybody. I live here and have been ripped of on more then on occassion... a few tips...

Phone cards... if you use pay as you go in a smart phone beware...it will cost you a fortune...you will fine no literature in english

Taxis.... learn the basic good day etc... and when you get in the taxi say good day and then the name of the street that the hotel is on... not the hotel... they will rip you off royally if they know your not local...they make london cabies look like saints.

bus tickets.... make sure you stamp them once on the bus/tram etc....or they'll fine you..

green man at traffic lights... only walk on green...red is an instant fine... you can only cross on green and beware the poles have a stupid systmen that drivers can cross the same time as you.. (no wonder the poles are the worst drivers in europe)

Never pay more then 7-10zl for a beer!! a take 7km (3 miles) about 30-35zl.

If you stick with the official taxi companies I do not think this is a risk. Avoid the gits hanging around in the airport and Warsaw Old Town

When you get off a plane in a country for the first time and walk to the taxi rank how do you know which are 'official' and which arn't?

I don't know what Sobieski does but personally I always have a look at Tripadvisor, Wikitravel, Lonely Planet etc first. If there are known issues about airport taxis they usually have something about it.

Your advice in post #9 is pretty sound. I'd add though that some businesses will certainly put their prices up during the Euro2012 period and anything could happen. A lady I know with a bar on Nowy Swiat in Warsaw told me the other day that if she wants to sell alcohol during the competition she has to display a banner from the sponsors who have already advised her what she should increase her prices to.

The toilets in Metro Centrum are also doubling their entry fee for the duration.

So what can I plan on paying for furnished apartment for one, one bedroom, living room, and full bathroom, with all included, phone, cable, and all utittles, and food, and everything more I may need for a month, in or near downtown Warsaw? Can I live off my social security check and a small pension check? Please advise, since I hope to make this move this fall, if all works out.

On a visit to Poland I took a nice place like I now need, on Hoza Street, but lost my contact information. It was on the corner of Hoza, above a few stores. Do you know how to help me find this contact, or a place like it?

Hi Mike. It depends if you mean a month on its own or one month of a longer stay. If you don't drinkor smoke, you can feed yourself and have money to spare on 1000 plan. Less if you are careful, more if you like to dine out.

I remember the flat on Hoza (if you recall, I took some photos before you came when we both used a different forum).
klubturysty.pl has a place on Hoza - maybe the same one - for short rentals
noce.pl also rents out flats. In very central areas like that though you'll find the rent is higher. And the apartment noisier.

As a regular visitor to Warsaw I'd advise anyone not to pay more than 12PLN for a beer in a bar. If businesses are going to get greedy then the off licences will do a roaring trade.

These are very general prices, but expect to pay 2000zl for a studio including utilities. Food depends on how much and what you eat. From 400 to 800zl a month. Other random costs like phone, transport, ermmm 300zl. So 3k a month for Warsaw.

So rent could be around $ 625.00 a month, in American money. This could work for me, if on Hoza Street, or near the downtown Warsaw area. Would I get a better price for long term?

I wonder..... A big pineapple, 2.07 kilos/4 Lb costs 7.60 zlotys = 2$ / 1.70 euro/ 1.40 GBP.

I've never paid more than 10 in krakow.

It's 15 in some places in Warsaw - more than that in the big hotels.

Don't go to that cellar jazz bar on the Rynek up by the Mariacki then, you'd definitely pay more than 10 there.


Only place where I'd pay that is the Browaria on Krakowskie Przedmiescie.
