I once put an old Passat in for a routine repair and the mechanic turned the clock back 120,000 km without being asked to. I wonder if anyone knows how easy this is to do with digital systems.

Depending on the car, it's a lot easier to do than the old method with an electric drill.

I wouldn't trust ANY car in Poland unless it was an ex-fleet vehicle sold by a foreign company. I've bought plenty of cars here, and helped plenty of others with theirs, and I hear very very few "honest" stories about mechanics and private car sellers. From the crash-damaged Mercedes to the stolen-and-converted British Rav4 to the BMW mechanic who charged 6000zl for work not done, and these aren't just stories of the innocent foreigner being cheated; this is Pole scamming Pole. It's an utterly ruthless market.

Be suspicious of ANY car you look at, and always ask for the VIN to check the car data with an ASO, so that you know what you're really buying.

Stop silly generalising. I have bought a few cars in Poland and never regretted the purchase. Yes, some guys tried to rip me off but to no avail.

A few cars? How much is a few? As in guessing that youve been in Poland for a few years and buying cars that often, for me it means that youre buying lemons.

Fine, you're not, maybe its because you probably know what fuel injection or a differential is. If you know a lot about cars, repairs, etc, then sure, it's easy to spot when your being ripped off. The vast majority don't and do get ripped off.

And Im not generalizing, if you in fact did try to buy a car in PL then the amount of hidden defects that no one is ever upfront about, the all too famous "powypadkowe skladak" i.e., a car buy together from two or more cars, and the now infamous "owned by a woman, garaged, never smoked in, never driven in rain, only used on sunday to go to church with" description is rampant. Totaled cars bought in the UK, repaired in Poland, and then registered in Germany as to appear as an original well maintained DE car for Polish buyers are incredibly common. Or my favorite, the "fully service history", all backed up by doctored stamps and forged signatures. I've seen one with my owns eyes. So take a hike, Im not generalizing, it's common practice here, just go to any sunday car market and ask if you can take their car to a mechanic or inspection station, or even check their car with a paint thickness meter, must will flat out refuse or even assault you.

If its an import from the USA then one can chek from car fax for cpl of $,my friends have caught cpl selling salvaged cars for 100s of thousand PLN esp the luxury ones.

You are probably right - yes, I know sth about cars and what I don`t know of can always be explained to me by a certain befriended mechanic.

But I would never sell a "made up" car - it would be totally beyond/against my nature.

And I don`t believe that I am the only person like that in Poland. There must be more of us.

That is why I told you to cut down on generalising. If you felt offended, I am sorry, but you should also take my feelings into account.
