Polish people and racism.

I disagree and assert you feel that way because you are Polish. This is a Polish
forum...this aspect of the problem has to do with Poland. This is a typical argument put forth by Poles to try and take the attention and blame off of them for whatever the topic is. There is a huge problem with accepting responsibility here. Now...one theory as to why this is come from many old Poles I know. They say that in the communist times if you were deemed responsible for a problem bad things could happen to you or at the very least you may lose something. Thus is became a part of the culture to deflect blame. You see this to this day in many aspects of the culture and business here. Every expat I know agrees and has experienced this. Only 'some' Poles tend to disagree...several Poles I know even acknowledge this.

We are talking about Poland and Polish culture...don't try to change the topic to deflect.

And Greg...it's not just about looking at someone...its about how you treat them. I have been stared at in a lot of places where I looked very different. But in most of those places I was treated very well. That's the difference.

clearly i meant SOME places not the whole of Asia and Africa, i thought that would be quite obvious. i can edit it to some places in Asia and Africa if it makes some people feel better, but i'm sure you see my point. i wouldn't call it racism, it would be more like curiosity and sometimes fear of the unknown. once you get used to seeing it, you will soon stop noticing. Poland needs a bit more time, but i'm sure it's not so bad. and yes don't you start me off lol.

OK, since we have so many resident experts here, which country emerged top of a recent poll (by quite far) as the most racist European country, as perceived by their fellow Europeans?

So how we treat them ?

My GF often gets racists coming into her travel agency, Greg. Kurwa jebany Arabów, brudasy, she hears all sorts of unsavoury comments when she proposes deals to Asian, Arabic or African countries. OK, this isn't broadly representative of Polish culture but she said that such attitudes were prevalent.

As a teacher, I've conducted many classes into racism over my 4 year stay here. There seems to be a consensus, AMONGST POLES, that they are rather racist as a country. That seems to be quite relevant to the thread, wouldn't u say?

What I think at this moment in time is neither here nor there. I've only lived here for 4 years, they have lived here all their lives.

Compared to most other places I have been I have seen more overt and quiet comments directed at non-whites and obvious foreigners. In private when people speak openly...like during dinners...the prevailing attitudes toward non-white foreigners are bad. Most of the comments on this forum from Poles regarding the issue reflect the same beliefs. Polish girls dating non-whites are much less accepted than in many (many not all) countries.

Everything I have said has been mentioned unsolicited by other expats and Poles and is not just my opinion.

It is not saying Poles are inferior or somehow 'less' but that is how the react...as if you were saying such a thing. It simply means that there is an aspect of the culture that needs improvement.

just generally make their lives difficult, avoid socialising with them, often cheat them off their money, make fun of them behind their back or sometimes in their face... sorry but i've seen it happen. but then Poles tend to do it to each other as well.

Shhhh....you will be labeled a traitor to the slavic superkingdom!! You need to leave your flat now...take only what you can carry and immediately go to a country with no Polish people....your life is in danger! No time to waste! ;)

Though, i dont know much about racism in Poland, i can say that there is some racism in Turkey. But the majority do not care about where you come from.

True enough. U know, I've even had chats with Polish people with coloured skin and they have been victims of racism. It's very rare, but some even have a go at me for being Scottish. I find it amusing tbh that many Poles can describe Scots as stingy rather than thrifty. Taxi drives and waiters are taken aback by the tips I give. They say Poles rarely do. What simpletons really take stereotypes so seriously as to offend other country's people? The answer is unfortunately many. And, yes, this isn't only a Polish thing.

Yeah I knew a Polish guy who was dark skinned and had black hair. He could pass for Arab, Turkish etc. We were at a dinner with a bunch of people neither of us knew and they asked him where he was from and said his Polish was very good. He told them he was 100% Polish and they didn't believe it. They made Turk jokes the whole night and gave him a load of trouble.

Three things I have noticed about Poles which stand up here:

stubborn
luck of ability to admit when they are wrong
inability to accept criticism and luck of listening skills and since I posses of of those characteristics, I am OK to admit it:)

Yeah, I know 2 Polish-Americans here, born to a Thai mother. They look like they are from Thailand and speak English as they lived in the States for a long time. So, with us, they spoke English and they often heard others insult them. They are fluent in Polish.

Kitajce, or sth like that, was what they were called. Not nice.

i have heard some polish young people who are a little racist, when they saw asians or other races on the street,will say some bad words to them or even beat them,as a asian,what should i do? just run away? have any asian people met such thing before? what did u do?

Yes there are idiots everywhere, not just polish people,


you do what you need to do to protect yourself all the time as with any situation if you go into a bad area or feel like

someone is threatening you call the police or get the hell out of there or use karate on them, I would if I knew how to

cause if someone is brave enough to call you a name they need a good swift kick in the arse!


you shouldnt put up with it no matter what your race or nationality.. make sure you carry some kind of protection if you
feel threatened, but I think this would only occur in areas where there are clubs/drinking and someone decides to be
a idiot for the night.

I have heard there are some English and Irish who do not like Poles. They seek out internet forums which lots of Polish people use and write many nasty things. What should I do? :(

my friend told me that in poland there are some people who are against foreigners,i am from asia, my asian friend told me he has experienced some unhappy things, like some poles said some bad words towards him on the street or even wanted to have a fight with him, so if i hang out with my polish gf, when those poles want to provoke me or something, what should i do? just run away as my friend asked me to or guarded my dignity? but as a foreigner, if i had a fight with a pole,will it influence the visa or residence?

Just kick whomever it is in the nuts and run like hell. That's what anyone does when threatened.

I think poles are becoming racists because they are thinking they are in EU and are better off then third world countries people while the real westerners are living a normal life and accepting globalization (Americanisation as i would define). Poles lately I feel have some kind of superiority complex which they like lately to show openly against immigrants( forgetting they were one in the west). Anyone feels that?

Racism became a very cheap word nowadays. Whoever is against Obama is automatically a racist. Many people (including myself) don't like Obama because he sucks as a president, that's it. White people who wouldn't sleep with blacks are also often considered racists. Ever heard about sex appeal?

Can't speak for Poland but the Poles in the UK are the same as most people, some are racists some are not racists!!


Very true, I'd be pretty pleased if Denzil Washington pestered me for a date but I'd be equally pleased if Adrien Brody pestered me for a date too, it's the person not the colour that creates sex appeal!!!

Sadly neither gentleman is likely to show interest in me, so I'd better go back to cleaning up the sitting room!!!LOL
