Opinion about Polish lifestyle: do you like? Strengths and weakness

Hi guys,

i am italian but i have visited Poland many times, for long periods too, spending a lot of time among polish students.

I think i have enough evidence to write my opinion about the polish lifestyle and i can compare it to the italian.

In my opinion, especially in the small towns, the lifestyle is more relaxed, less space to the apperance and focus on little things. Students look open mindend and the average culture is not low. I like also the spirit of sharing, i saw less individuality than in Italy. I appreciate the vodka and the beer, although sometimes they drink too often.

As regard the nightlife i prefer small free entrance clubs as in Krakow than big disco as here in Italy, besides here in Poland girls and boys dance together, not like in Italy whereit's a remote possibility.

Also during the Christmas time, in Poland, families are really close and you can breath a good atmosphere.

About the weakness: I don'like the alimentary habits, i think their food is too fat and grease. Furthermore, they almost don't drink still water.

Sometimes, it's not easy to relation with people older than 40, they don't speak English and it can be not easy to accomplish your task dealing with them.

Polish street are dangerous and tight, too. I think the biggest lack in Poland regards the links between their big and fascinating cities.
I don't like either the polish rap and commercial dance (disco polo), please turn off the stereo!!

Eventually i have to say that i heard many stereotypes about the life in Poland but large part of them are not true. I like Poland and think that their lifestyle is not that far from the western standards.

I am not from Poland either. I was born in Brooklyn, New York, USA. My parents both immigrated to New York in the 90's and I was shortly born after ( 1996.) I have always loved going to Poland for summer vacation and I thank my parents for teaching me Polish before English.

Anyways, from my observations on my trip this year ( summer of 2012) I would have to agree with you on most of your opinion. The biggest difference for me between Poland ( more specifically Bialystok) and NYC is that people in Poland generally are apathetic towards clothing style and brands. In Poland it really does not matter what type of brand of clothing you where or how much your shoes cost while in NYC people even sometimes care about what type of undershirt or underwear you are wearing lol.

I agree with you on them not drinking still water. I drink maybe around 2 liters of still water per day, and my friends and family thought it was weird. There is of course both healthy and not healthy food in Poland, just as in every other culture and country. There is also good and bad music, like in every country.

Are there many Italians that visit/live in Poland? I'm guessing that some of the people who came for the Euros will come back next summer. I am quite fond of Italian culture, actually. I grew up and live in an area that is about 70-80% Italian ( American.) Growing up, I loved going to Italian restaurants and eating all the different types of pizza ( fresh mozzarella and Sicilian squares being my favorite) and Italian bakeries make some of the best cookies I have ever eaten. I hope to one day in the future to make a trip to Italy; from what I hear from my friends, it is beautiful.

Yes, you're right though. In Poland noone cares what underpants you are wearing. That kind of shallowness hasn't reached our waters yet:D:D:D

Well the underpants was supposed to be a metaphor, sort of like it does not matter how you dress... But once when I was in a locker room in a gym a stranger was making fun of someone for wearing "fake " Polo underwear. XD

I agree about rap but disco polo is awesome. I like the Polish and Italian version. Enjoy :-)

Howdee, are you from southern or northern Italy. Where i live, there are quite a lot of descendants of southern Italaly.

Do you mean the roads are not good? I agree. Some of the B-roads are appalling. I had to drive in fog the other night, and it was absolutely the worst urban road I have ever seen, the road markings and boundaries lack any reflective assistance and I was just guessing where the kerb and centre line should be.

As for brand names - the malls here are full of shoppers who are far more smartly dressed than in the UK. People take more care of their appearance here, and it tends to be the older ones buying the cheap clothes at the hypermarkets (and that includes me, although I also buy second hand and have had some great bargains)

I am almost 100% sure that the teens and 20-30 year olds try to buy brand names here, to impress each other.

It's not about impressing each other but about the design. Do you really think that having h&m or reserved piece of cloth is somewhat impressing? ;D
