One of more conspicuous Polish traits - inconsequence?

delphiandomine: so why doesn't someone simply remove it?
maybe because it's not politically safe?

No, because there is democracy. The guys who want the cross to stay where it is create a majority in the Parliament (working on behalf of their voters) , they are more numerous and as such stronger than the ones who want to see it removed. Isn`t it simple??? In case the cross removal supporters try to take it down, the majority is going to react:

d

That is pure democracy.

But there wasn't democracy, because it was never voted on - it was placed there in the middle of the night.

We don't know how many people in the Sejm want it to stay, because there has never been a vote on the issue. Why there hasn't been a vote is slightly mysterious, but understandable - if the cross stays, the liberals can gain political capital by pointing out the absurdity of it. If the cross goes, the conservatives lose out and suffer a black eye in their electorate's eyes. Therefore - better for everyone if it stays.

Of course there is. Democracy isn`t only voting, it is also supporting the facts which have taken place.

No need for any vote. The fact that the cross stays is enough.

Therefore - better for everyone if it stays.

Of course.

I dunno, for something so significant, it should have been done the right way, not the way that involves taking a ladder in the middle of the night when everyone else is asleep.

Not least because - at least to my understanding - these things are normally placed by a priest. The fact that it was placed there by a pair of political opportunists gives it nothing but a reputation as something used to score cheap political points.

What if someone takes it down? Will we see a ridiculously petty cross war carried out in the Sejm?

Yes, but if it had been done the right way, we wouldn`t be discussing it now, right???? :):)

Who knows?......

I estimate the cross will last for the next 20, 25 years....

I think we'll see a huge argument over it at some point (especially if a minority party like Ruch Palikota holds the balance of power) - but yes, 20-25 years seems to be about right. But I've always thought that opposition to the cross in the Sejm is directly linked to the power of the Church - if the RCC weakens, then the cross represents far less of a problem.

No, it seems RP are losers (they lose in all polls :):) and don`t know how to change it).
