I often see quite a similarity between Polski families and Italian families. Why are they so much alike? They both seem passionate about culture, food, and often have tight knit families.
Why are the Italians and Polski so much alike?
very roman catholic too although i wouldn't say that polish families are as close as the italian ones are.. anyway, i feel there is probably more differences then similarities between the two nations.
I see the cultures pretty similar. I worked with them 'wops' long enough to know. I can't even count the Italian/Polish married couples i know and that's because they seem to get along. Well, I know two who divorced, but that's not necessarily because of the difference in nationality, just typical divorce issues.
Familia and mangia work well for both cultures.

PS to Allison
Why do Americans call real grandmas (real=gives sweets, gives pocket money, tell stories, are beloved by their grandchildren) as italian grandmas? doesnt non-italian grandmas like that?
well I heard that Italians call us Polish "the Italians of the North"
Wasnt someone saying they heard that the Irish liken themselves to Poles too or visa versa because of the whole family thing?...Dont Pakistanis and Indians have close family relationships too, why not liken yourselves to them, its no different? :D

I don't know what you're talking about, those things sound American to me. The all American grandparents seem to usually be more what you describe and the European ones are very practical ie. sending nice clothes for Christmas instead of toys. My dad says that his Texas grandparents would send him all of these cheap fun toys for Christmas and the Danish/Polish/German grandparents from NY would send him expensive children clothes and practical things. He said that he always automatically new the presents from NY were crap and that the ones from Texas were exciting.

Yeah thats right. Every chrismas my grandma was buying me socks and knickers + extra money in bar of chocolate ;)
Wasnt someone saying they heard that
not me.
lol when he was older he got a shaver for Christmas. They wanted to make sure he had everything he needed.

Then your father was an ungrateful little boy, maybe the other side couldn't afford more, did you think about that, also what kid wants clothes and "practical" things for christmas, its a time of joy and fun for kids for goodness sake! Give me cheap toys in abundance over a fookin jumper any day!
Alison, I have no idea what you concept of "Europe" is but the "typical" granny has been replaced with a child minder because granny has worked her socks off for years in a job to contribute to supporting the family and is enjoying her retirement now! The times you are reminiscing through are your fathers tales which are long gone, most if not all Italian women in Italy work same as in all European countries.

I went to school with 30% Italian 2nd generation and they all got the same as I did and were treated no differently - Im English by the way! Alison is living in some dream and is deamonising Americans because she has some dream that its all different in Europe..It's bollox!
Sorry Ali but you've been fed a crock of shyt...
Sorry I have no idea what your talking about, it doesn't make much sense to me. I WAS saying that its better to give cheap toys on Christmas. Giving practical things to a little kid is almost mean. I don't know anything about Italians really but I've noticed that Europeans are usually more practical than Americans so thats why I brought up that story my dad told me.
I was not "deamonizing" Americans wtf are you talking about? I was glorifying them. I'm not really sure what your talking about though, it doesn't really make sense. There is a big difference between how Europeans and Americans do things.

My mistake Alison, I missread it :( My apologies..

Well, I got my fair share of toys as a kid and no "practical" toys and Im English..I think we're considered European :D

Not really, my niece just turned 18, she got a new laptop, digital camera a few grand in an account off parents and lot of jewellery and champagn and more cash off relatives...what do 18 year olds get in the US? (the cash off parents is for a car).
Look I have no idea what your family life is like or the grand parents...but kids in the UK get fun things on special dates...
You cant base your limited experiences on what whole nations are like...

wow... what I got for my 18? I dont remember...
I didn't get much either, my parents are poor. I got some gas money at graduation and a little money from my parents and some small things from my sister for my birthday but thats about it. I don't have distant family that likes me either, so I don't get much haha.
The Italians are far more expressive than the Poles. They gesture to get many things whereas Poles don't.
They gesture
you can lose your teeth during a conversation with an Italian...
you're safe with a Pole... ;)
That's very true! They have way too many gestures, many with flailing arms. Poles might scare a few people with their drunken gesture, LOL. It looks like they want to behead you :(
Why are the Italians and Polski so much alike?
Only an American would write sth like this.Polish are close to Czechs in some aspects and to Ukrainians in some others. No other nation shares similarities with Poles except Russians of course.
I think it's the Catholic connection. I also think the two groups like family life a bit more than the colder atheist and protestant nations like the UK and Germany. Let's be honest, Poles are more hospitable than the cold, heartless Teutonic German or the snobbish, morally corrupt Anglo. I'm gonna use stereotypes here but I believe Poles and Italians are more festive and are willing to share more with a stranger. So religion and a festive lifestyle can go a long way in uniting people.
cold, heartless Teutonic German or the snobbish, morally corrupt Anglo
I've found this to be remotely true the Germans are rather cold and the Brits are often snobbish.
Interesting.

Do you believe the running stereotypes (idiot lazy brutes) about the Poles as well? Do you think them true?

hahahahahahahahaha this guy makes me laugh!
Morally corrupt, that one is priceless..well he is right, we all know how "Corruptless" Poland is ;)

How many Germans and Brits do you know personally Allison?
Interesting.
Actually no, it was pathetic.
morally corrupt Anglo
Theiving scum (mainly cars in Germany) who work cleaning toilets and live illegaly in America hence the reason they cant get on the visa waiver scheme! Marry 3rd world immigrants in the UK for a few hundred bucks? How's that for a stereotype? Which nation am I talking about?
