This winter is particularly freezing in Krakow and i was just curious to know how most people can cope with these temperatures and if life goes on just as normal in terms of work, everyday life, etc

I have noticed than most of my friends drive everywhere and do not have to walk much however I was wondering how people adapt , is it just a question of beeing used to it ?

indeed, it's freezing cold, but life does go on. The buses, trains and trams are running, people still go or drive to church, go shopping, see their family etc. As long as you have proper clothing it's bearable. Plus today it's sunny - it's a shame to stay in all day!

As long as you have proper clothing it's bearable.

That's true. It was about -22 last night in Warsaw and people were out on the streets as normal.

Proper clothing and some secret tea recipes :).

HERBATA Z PRADEM(tea spiked with alcohol) or HERBATA PO GORALSKU (tea spiked with moonshine Highlander style), he, he......but .........alcohol is not a good remedy for low temps in general because it fools the system into feeling warm, while it is cold outside - so pace yourself.

It is easier to stay indoors, but proper clothing and brisk walking might do the trick. Protecting the face with good face cream will help too.

Going to go visit the plane now and blast the cylinders and oil sump with the heat gun for about an hour... see if we can get it into the positive temps...

It depends very much in wind and humidity.

- 20 C with no wind and low humidity feels warmer, than - 10 C windy or high humidity.

Due to differences in humidity, - 15 C usually feels colder in Gdansk than in Kraków.

Most of people cannot cope.

That's why Poland and especially Krakow population is constantly decreasing.

That's why only in the last days 122 people died here because
of these extreme cold temperatures.

Poland is not a good place to live.

You can check the statistics, even the average life hope is very low
compared to rest of Europe. Because rheumatism and pneumonia are
very usual, because of such low temperatures 4 - 5 mnths each year.

You have been warned

You are trying to be funny ? Cold killed the swine flue. And normal winter temperature in Poland is ~0C, this winter is unusually cold in the whole Europe, you don't think that when one cross the Polish border It immidietely turns into +15C, do you ?

You have been warned

Be very affraid...

You have been warned

where's the evil laughter? Something along <mwahahaha> or <bouahahaha> and sounds of bats or wolves' howling..

On a more serious note I can agree with Grzegorz_ it's rarely as cold as it is now, it is sometimes hence people are a little bit used to it, but it's not like that every year...

Very good Strzyga, Hihi.

When it is that cold , one stays home and
1)
Either studies or read so it might explain why most Poles are often very cultured
2)
Either drinks Vodka and strong alcohol so it might explain why some are real drunkards

in anycase no wonder why Polish homes are often very confortable and people invest a fortune in them so that they can remain "confined" in their houses or flat a lot during winter.

Believe me or not, when it is about -10 I usually drive to work by bicycle... It is just the problem of proper clothes, in fact it is quite warm when you move :-) In -20 it is getting somewhat cold though.

Anyway, people are not a problem, what about swans, ducks and seagulls? I was feeding them near the river today with bread, and well, those are tough animals...

Polish homes are often very confortable

Ha...well that certainly does not apply to my place...the thermometer in my other room says its zero degrees in there , its not so much warmer in this one where i am huddled over a small electric fire as i type , dressed like a dam eskimo....The water has frozen up , one pipe inside the house has frozen and burst..I need to go out and get some food , but my Jeep won,t start as the battery has died from the cold , and i can,t take it off to charge it , as the bonnet has frozen shut.... I love my farm in the forest in the summer , but in winter its just a test of survival.....Welcome to Poland....!

Most of people cannot cope.

You should try to relax a little, it's good for your heart.

Nonsense. Whilst extreme cold does generate extra deaths, the chief reason for Poland's low life expectancy is the diet (too rich in pork, grease, butter..) which generates a very high incidence of cardio vascular disease

How do you deal with cold temperatures? You buy a parka, some thinsulate gloves and boots, wear a hat with ear flaps, put some blankets in your car. If you live in a really frigid place, you should install a special heater for your car's engine. Drink lots of coffee and eat lots of oatmeal and soup.

Drink lots of coffee and eat lots of oatmeal and soup.

Comfort food. Like Macaroni and cheese, split pea soup, or an Irish Stew.
