The first question reminds me of a Marx Brothers sketch, a.k. Are you after Mullins and McCartey? No, the fellas we are after are McCartey and Mullins :) :)

You would have been well advised to write:

c half red and half white.

Then the test would have been truly Polish ;) ;)

Polska Biało-Czerwoni tells you all you need to know but b is not wrong :) :) Some people might have their flag inverted ;)

I can assure you that the test is not too hard for me having been here for so long. Besides, it's best to be sure face-2-face. Anyone can say they got 100% but cheat all the while.

Hey, I didn't made this rule! :) I think that all foreigners even if they don't live in Poland can try their knowledge (or try to guess the answers). It's all about fun. Just don't say you know the answer for sure to not spoil the quiz to others.

I will solve the quiz in the evening.

When posting answers can you please rate everyone who answered:)

No problem since it seems you two will be the only to rate.

1. What are the colors of Polish flag:
a. red and white
b. white and red
c. white and red with blue triangle

Red and white would be the flag of Indonesia

2. Are nonprivate university courses in Poland free?
a. yes all courses are free
b. no, only day time, working week courses are free
c. as in answer b, but a second major is not free

3. Schoolkids in Poland needs to wear a uniform:
a. true
b. false
c. they don't wear it either way

Actually when I created this question I thought the correct answer would be c) but in fact it depends on school now.
During PiS goverment, a new Minister of Education Roman Giertych (from LPR) introduced in 2006 an obligation of wearing uniforms in elementary and middle schools to prevent poorer kids from being singled out. In fact it met a huge critisism - kids opposed wearing uniforms, parents complained about additional expenses. That led to abolishion of that requirement in 2008. Since them some schools still require to wear uniforms (as a inner school rule), but most don't.

4. What creature is on Polish Coat of Arms:
a. a stork
b. a bison
c. an eagle

All of those animals are in some way associated with Poland but the white eagle on red background makes the Polish Coat of Arms. It is connected with legend about progenitor of Polish nation - Lech who was inspired by an eagle where to establish his settlement.

It is said that most storks are born in Poland. European bison (in Polish: żubr) was extincted on the wilde but reintroduced. You can find żubr only in: Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Lithuania and Russia. Especially famous of żubr population is Białowieża forest. Poland was very engaged in the action of reintroduction of that spiecies.

NIP = numer identyfikacji podatkowej (tax identification number) issued when you fill an application. Id card (dowód osobisty) is given to adults (in most cases). PESEL = national identification number, 6 first numbers of it are your date of birth.

8. What is celebrated on the Polish national holiday on August 15:

a. 1991
b. 1989
c. 1990

12. What was the first capital city of Poland:
a. Cracow
b. Biskupin
c. Gniezno

Every child in Poland is taught that there were three capital cities in Polish history: Gniezno was the first, Cracow was the second and Warsaw was the third. But it's not true. I've just read that recent archeologist research revealed that Poznań was more important town in those times than Gniezno. Gniezno is near Poznań so we can certainly say that origins of Polish state are somewhere from there :) Also there were some other episodical capital cities during Poland's existense.

If you check the legend about Lech the place where he found white eagle nest he named Gniezno (nest in Polish is gniazdo)

Thank for running the quiz a.k.. Well 50% is not too bad:) I was looking for trick questions and should have had No 20 correct as it's the same in most countries. I also knew the Berlin wall fell in 1989, but for some reason I thought I'd read that the communists stayed for another two years PL. My bad:)

President would be the head of the Polish state, right?
And does Poland have an office called chancellor and does it have any real power?
Allways thought having chancellors was something unique to us Germans and the Imperium in Star Wars ;)

The question about the coat of arms is by the way quite easy to guess.
All countries, or at least all countries worth knowing either have an eagle or a lion as their coat of arms. You should have at least included the lion to the list of possible answers :D

No, she haven't.

Chancellor is like a prime minister in Germany.

Battle of Warsaw

To makes things clear I mean battle of 1920.

18 out of 20 isn't bad. It would have been 19, but you say that for 8 the answer is the battle for Warsaw. My calendars always list it as the Assumption of Mary. I think I'm right on this one.

Good thread AK,I feel like a SLUM DAWG MILLIONAIRE :)

18 can drink, smoke cigarettes, gain a driving license and vote

Just to question isnt 16 legal age to have sex in poland?Doesnt one be considered to have sex at an adult age considered by the law of the land? Now to drink in USA is 21,and to vote is 18 so is to have sex.......wouldnt 16 be also considered legal age?????Guess its a grey area....depends how you look at it:)very debatable but still I think 16 can be legal adult age also in Poland?wonder what Polish law define an adult as?
