Disco Polo - No No No No No!

I though that Disco Polo was dead.

never! my sister is a singer in this band that plays at weddings back in Poland, and she always tells me that at the great majority of weddings they covered, people would not move their butts to the dancefloor without some good ole disco polo. its not her favourite genre, but that's what people want!

"Mydełko Fa" was thought as a parody of Disco Polo, or at least Disco Polo's direct predecessor, but in the end it became it's classic tune.

Szabada szabada.... :)

hmmm... it always amazed me...

correct me if I am worng - disco polo is some kind of pop music with polish lyrics.

so, english pop music with english lyrics should be discoenglo. and nobody laughts at it :D

Well the following is largely in English and as disco-polo as it gets.

Basically, many or most Polish people are socialized to believe that music from an English-speaking country (maybe Scandinavia too) is inherently intelligent and in good taste (not understanding or paying attenton to the lyrics for decades helped maintain this illusion).

Disco polo is not my ... preferred thing to listen to, but it certainly was no worse than international mega-crap like Ace of Base or Dr Alban or Aqua etc etc etc. But it was entirely too .... Polish to appeal to the elite.

I'm sure there is plenty of dreadful English pop music - it just doesn't seem to have the same mass appeal amongst the population as Disco Polo does amongst Poles. I can't help it if over recent decades, England has proved to be one of the world's greatest musical nations. I have heard some good Polish music of the non-Disco Polo variety, but it doesn't have the worldwide appeal that American, British, Irish or even Swedish popular music does. It's not just an English-language thing - Brazilian music, Spanish Latin American music, French hip-hop all seem to cross over into worldwide conciousness. One of these days it might be Poland's turn, but not with Disco Polo. Many Poles can have a lot of fun with it, but pretty much only amongst themselves.

Ace of Base

The very worst of Swedish music.

I didn't think you actually watched them. Maybe you do. Maybe you don't. Maybe you listen to them at top volume whilst dance around your room singing along. Hopefully not. Then again, what other people do in the privacy of their own homes is entirely up to them.

I just had a complaint from a neighbour today about the excessive loudness of "that dodgy music". I tried to assure her it wasn't me and that it was that other bloke who moved out recently. I don't think she believed me as she could quite clearly see I was wearing a teeshirt with a big white eagle on it and POLSKA in big letters. It might as well have had "I" followed by a big red heart and "DISCO POLO" on it.

It's all horrible.. I always cringe when I hear disco polo.. I'd like to have some proper rock and roll at my wedding by I doubt that guests would enjoy it.. ; )

There are actually some nice songs (but you have to be selective).

Not many people realize that Adam Małysz got his start singing Disco Polo ....

Is it true? That's cool. One of the best ski jumpers the world has ever seen.

Bayer Full selling 67 million records in CHina

Poland's Bayer Full disco polo group has signed a contract to provide 67 milion of their records to China. They first accessed the botomless Chinese market during this summer's Expo in Shanghai. The Chinese fell in love with their music. They have translated soem pieces into Chinese. Instead of 'Wszyscy Polacy to jedna rodzina' they now sing in Chinese 'Polak i Chińczyk to jedna rodzina...'

Why the anti-disco polo backlash?

Why is it that even the term disco polo is like a red flag to a bull? It produces a vertiable knee-jerk condemnation in many quarters of Poland? Other genres seem to generate the normal range of likes and dislikes -- someone may or may not fancy jazz, rock, pop, reggae, techno or whatever, but those who don't usually do not go ballisitic about it. Can anyone explain the inordinate intenstiy of anti-disco polo sentiments tto this poor, ignorant PolAm?

Because discopolo is that bad. Mindless droning listened to by mindless drones. I'm completely certain that discopolo has turned an entire generation of brains into a soft mush. Stupid lyrics put to generic beats for the sole purpose of breeding.

You have a way with words, convi :) but I have to agree: I hate disco polo with passion.

But Disco Polo is the most popular music in the whole country - or so that singer guy from Boys says. Millions of Poles can't be wrong.... :D

What the hell is PolAm? Disco polo is simply a trash music and comparing it to jazz, rock or pop is the ignorance.

Except for the language, there is nothing distinctly Polish about it. Every nation puts out droves of this sh!t.

Just had a listen. Probably what we would call "euphoric dance" I guess?

It's awful but as f stop says, certainly not a uniquely Polish form of awful.

If there is indeed a backlash to this in Poland, well done on your taste Poland I say!

But there is no more loud, tasteles, repetitively obnoxious noise than rap crap... Why would anyone want to hear about narcodealers or slumdwellers wanting to kill cops and rape females set to that droningly monotonous unga-bunga beat?

You are right. Here is the proof that it was Germans who invented disco polo!

It seems that Europe never got over disco.

We had our disco riots here 30 years ago: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disco_Demolition_Night

Because it's not only that, there's some great hiphop out there. There is also terrible commercial "rap".

there's some great hiphop out there.

But there's no great disco polo. Except one 'Mydełko Fa', brilliant.

Now see this. And it's the top shelf of refinement as goes for the genre, believe me.
