I am an American doing a report on polish clothing and I am especially interested in discussing Polish folk costumes such as the following: £owicki, Kujawski and the mountaineer costume from Podhale.
I want to know the symbolism of the costumes listed above and if people still wear the costumes during special occasions. Also, I found the modernized national costumes 'The voice of the people' by Malgorzata Magiera during the Krakow Fashion Awards display in Krakow, Poland, 05 April 2008.
Do people in Poland really wear these outfits or something similar? Ideally, I would like to do a compare and contrast of past and present Polish clothing.
Also, I found the modernized national costumes 'The voice of the people' by Malgorzata Magiera during the Krakow Fashion Awards display in Krakow,
This sounds interesting... do you have a link?
Re national costume, I've visited Poland many times, and the only people that I've seen wearing national costume are the characters on a bottle of Zywiec :)
You might find some video on youtube of folk groups wearing national costume. There have been one ore two pop songs with people wearing something akin to national dress. Usually anything connected to the mountains.
Polish regional garb (folk attire) is worn nowadays mainly on ceremonial occasions or for tourist purposes. Religious processions and harvest-home events are among such occasions. Soemtimes you will find waitresses wearing stylised versions of folk attire or highlanders who pose for pictures or drive horse-drawn characters for the benefit of tourists.
What do you think -- would someone in a cowboy outfit in the NY subway evoke the same, greater or lesser sensation than a Góral or £owicz-clad bloke in the Warsaw metro?

Like Beckski said, you are going to need to be a bit more specific... we can probably help you if you have a particular question, but if you think that we're going to do your homework for you, you have another think coming!!! :)
Check out: raymond@polartcenter.com The Polish Art Center of Michigan dispenses info and advice on the subject of Polish folklore, reigonal attire, etc.

Hi, My grandson was told he needed to write an essay on one of his families cultures and since I half Polish and half Spanish I thought I would research the Polish side first. I'm mainly interested in the costumes they wear at special ocassions. I am unable to spell some of these dresses but I know they wear a headdress with flowing ribbons and the dress is white with different color ribbons sewed around the skirt of the dress. Can you send me a picture of this and a few other costumes?
Thank you for your kindness in helping me. hpretty242
Like Spain I am sure, Poland has many different traditional customs from different regions.
So for an example, Zakopane, highlanders in the south of Poland, 100 km south of Krakow in the Tatra mountains have these kinds of costume:
And here are some from Krakow: poland zakopane dress
traditional embroidered woolen costumes with their characteristic parzenica motifs.
I don't know if you want any particular region's costume or just an example but perhaps for your project you could take several examples and compare and contrast them.
Poles from different regions of Poland wear different costumes connected to local folklore and culture. Which region precisely are you trying to focus on? or is it supposed to be more general?
I am a teacher with two Polish children in my class. We are doing a Christmas show and I would love to have the children dressed in traditional Polish costume. When I asked them about costumes, they said that only their grandparents know about them. It's probably a long shot but does anyone know of somewhere that I could get them? I haven't had any success searching online. Thank you!
Maybe try to write to cepelia.pl/en/ - Cepelia. Mind that there is no 1 folk costume. There are many costumes depending on region. There are also region without folk dress.
On this page you will find a list of just some of the regions and the costumes representing them but it's far from being a complete list. perfekt.krakow.pl/costumes
Here you have examples of folk costumes pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polskie_stroje_ludowe
There is difference between folk costume (which was created in the break of XIX/XX) and national costume (since XVI cent.) Most Poles don't even know what is Polish national costume. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%BBupan
Great Polish costumes. Some of the little girls look like me, when I was little. My mom tried to encourage me to participate in Polish folk dancing, when I was a kid. Now I wish I would have listened to mama:(
