A friend of ours has had legal troubles for over six years in Poland. He's a Pole, and these events have taken place in Poland. As far as we know (we are not that close to the situation so we may not know everything) our friend has been imprisoned several times over the past six years on suspicion of not paying business taxes. He's yet to be charged with any crime, so no trial dates have been set. Typically, he'll be put in prison (detained might be a better word) for 90 days, and then be released after posting a cash bond. This has gone on for six years. In the latest incident, he's been held for six months, and was scheduled for release two days ago. The prosecutor went to the judge and was granted permission to hold him another 90 days. Does this really happen? Can prosecutors detain people indefinetely in the hopes the'll talk or pay a bribe? I'm told this is not uncommon.
