VAT on used goods imported into Poland

Can anyone tell me how VAT and import duties are handled now? In the past you got a note and had to go to a main Post Office and pay the taxes and collect. I have heard a couple of people say that now it is different and the postman collects the fees at your door.

Also...I want to have a used laptop sent to me. When I did this in the past it was a huge mess as they tried to assess fees for a brand new laptop and it took a lot of arguing and time to get them to release it at a better (albeit still unfair) rate. Does anyone know the best way to handle this now as far as declaring value and how they will assess the fees?

Anybody...I sort of need to make a decision fast.

Proof of payment is usually accepted by them. If you can show them the paypal transfer instruction along with a breakdown of item cost and shipping cost and both the declared value and the insured value are the same as the price you paid, they'll most probably accept that as the price on which the tax should be calculated.

Thanks Harry...the problem is in this case I am not buying it. It is a laptop a friend is giving to me. So I am not sure how to address the value and there won't be any sales documentation. It also makes me wonder how duties are assessed on warranty repairs that are sent abroad etc. Are you charged again for the value when they ship it back fixed?

Hmm, how best to put this? You show them a copy of the Paypal transfer order, you do not show them a copy of the message from paypal informing you that the payment has been rejected by the recipient and has been returned to your account.

Yeah I was considering that thanks ;)

Not sure if they have a believable threshold for pricing though. Do you think they pay that much attention? It is a fairy new computer so not sure how cheaply I can get away with "paying" for it without them calling bullshit.

Merged: Importing Personal Belongings from India into Poland

Hey PF members,

I'm an International Student from Africa and I'll need to ship my Desktop PC down to Poland from a non-EU country (India, lived in India for a while, so this explains why I'm shipping from India, lol).

I just wanna know if Tax/Custom/Import Duties apply to me.

I have invoices of the desktop components with my name on them, and I'll be shipping via Emirates SkyCargo.

used the pc for a while and it's definitely older than 6months+ since I built it.

there's something about importing personal household goods here : movers.com/international_movers/customs-regulations/poland.html

I'm not really sure if its correct.

Thanks :)
