Using Paypal to send money to Poland

Has anyone used Paypal to send money to Poland as a gift? The fee is about 4zl for every 100zl sent. Is this reasonable? Are there any better methods of sending sums less than 500zl?

moneybrookers is really good. i use it most of the time. set fees and fast.

Paypal deducts money for international transfers (sometimes), and the amount it deducts is something around 4% or so. This is reasonable compared to the standard rate of most banks.

I have managed to sometimes prevent Paypal from deducting this fee, by sending money in the same currency as it will be received as. I.e. sending USD to a Polish Paypal account will convert the money into PLN (this is what costs, I think) but sending zł to a Polish Paypal MIGHT not deduct any money at all. This is very hard to determine, because sometimes it does deduct and sometimes it doesn't. I don't know why.

EDIT: If you want to compensate for the deduction fee, then simply add 5% to whatever it is you will send. I trade on Paypal quite often, and usually I end up short if anything less than an extra 5% is sent.

I would like to know if someone in Nowy Zmigrod, Poland south of Jaslo would be able to go to the records at the St. Peter & Paul Roman Catholic Church and look up the death certificate of my great grandfather to see where in Hungary he emigrated from.

When I was there, 10 years ago, with a translator, it took only 5 minutes to find my father's birth and baptisimal certicate.

If it was this easy, then assuming it might take 20-30 minutes to find my great grandfather's cetificate ????

What would be a reasonable stipend, to pay someone for his/her time ?

And would paypal be the best way to pay ?

Don't bet on it. While it might be easily found, there's also the chance it might not. I've had very frustrating experiences finding one set of information but not others. Sometimes one book might be available but not the other.

Don't forget to check marriages and death books as well as birth records.

I find Paypal a bit of a pain in the a.. - and don't like the fact that both the sender and the recipient are required to have an account. I've been using Xendpay for while and it's ok. If you open a free account with them the transfers are for free. the rates are not too bad either.

And Western Union?

When I send sums less than 500zl, I use transfer24 where I pay about 0.95-2gbp. The same day I have money in my bank account.

Is these a limit to the amount of money you can send to Poland via PayPal?

That depends on how you've set up your PayPal account. You set your own limits. To send large amounts you need to link your bank account and I think there's a limit on how much you can send in a single transaction but it's quite high, in the thousands anyway.
