Setting up small business in Poland?

It really depends. It can cost thousands or it can cost 1PLN to get your own firm. I paid one złoty to register mine but it just made me a contractor and not sb who runs a fully-fledged teaching school.

what kind of business are you setting up? are the forms fairly easy to fill out and where do you go to register your business?

Just starting a business to deal with my teaching, it's much easier to do it myself than rely on schools to actually do the paperwork properly.


If you're an EU citizen, it's painless provided you have the relevant 5 year residence card. Non-EU citizens might find it much harder going, particularly if they don't have the right to legal residence.

There's a specific office in every city dealing with 'dzialalnosc gospodarcza'.

I am a Polish citizen but I haven't lived there for a really long time. so it might be more difficult for someone like myself? i've never heard of the 5 year residence card.

Do you have the plastic ID card? If so, it shouldn't be a problem for you at all. If you've still got the old ID booklet (or none at all), then you'll need to get the plastic ID card before being able to register a business. But because you're Polish, you shouldn't have any issues apart from needing to have an updated ID card.

Unfortunately I don't have the ID card. how hard is it to get that card?

Easy enough, I imagine, but you can only get it once you're in Poland.

Do you have a Polish passport?

Yes I do have a Polish passport. I'm also listed as a resident at my grandmother's place. I even got to vote once in an election!

how long have you been in Poland? do you like it? can you speak Polish very well? I am seriously considering moving back there sometime soon.

Hmm...I think you might have some problems here - as far as I understand it, a Polish citizen registered in Poland should have a dowód osobisty. There's no requirement for a Polish citizen not registered in Poland to have such a thing - but as you're on computer as being registered in Poland at that address, you might have problems. Best bet would be to contact the Urząd Miasta in the place where you're registered and ask them for advice - unfortunately, they might very well fine you for not having one.

I had a small business in UK , Greater Manchester based( app GBP 60 k), but now with change rate 4,60 zl was 7..a shame, no sense anymore..

I'll have to ask my family next time I talk to them. when i registered a few years back they didn't tell me that i had to get a dowod osobisty right away as long as i planned to get one eventually. i will probably get one the next time i'm in Poland, which won't be until next summer.

No, it's not easy at all. EU funds are in desperately short supply at the moment - if you're not in one of the 'priority' groups (unemployed, under 25, over 50, disabled, returning to work after giving birth) - then you're not going to get anything. There are funds available for unemployed people (equal to 6 months minimum wage) - but these funds, again, aren't in huge supply and you'll struggle if you aren't in a priority group.

EU money for bigger projects is possible, but you'll need to have a significant amount of money behind you before thinking about that. Polish banks aren't too happy to lend money at the moment, so you can forget about getting a loan on the basis of EU money.

The fact that you want to try in Krakow is even more against you - you might have some success in smaller, more deprived provinces (think Lubuskie or Podkarpackie) if you can generate employment.

I advise on this stuff professionally, but in your case, all I can say is that Poland isn't a great place to do this unless you've got a serious amount of cash behind you. To get the relevant visa on the basis of self employment, they'll be looking for quite a lot of money.

You may want to contact some of the Indians who have restaurants here in Poland (search on here, there are a couple that post, Sarul Islam for instance), and see if what's feasible.

I am from California. I am in krakow now, and started a small business with some translation help from friends, but my business is in IT. I started a small company in US, and now here, but my question is how can i become a legal resident, for about 2-5 years? I had read before i came to Poland 2 years ago online that i could start a business and this would allow me legally to stay here, but i dont know anymoe if thats true. is there a specific 'type' of business which would allow me to stay legally?
