Any good ideas for setting up a business in Poland by a British investor?

Hey guys & girls

I am a British male who lives in Hull with a beautiful polish fiancee and a baby on the way . we both want to move to Poland and start a business my fiancee is closer to her family .

Does anybody have any ideas i don't have any Qualifications in anything but i am good at selling things as i buy and sell things on in England .

I hope to hear some brilliant ideas from you wonderful polish people :)

Sorry, but Poland is an extremely harsh and competitive business environment that doesn't treat unqualified dilettantes kindly, especially foreigners. Without the necessary education and experience, and without an excellent knowledge of the local language and business culture, there is very little chance that you will succeed.

Also, the British-boy-moves-to-Poland-so-that-his-girlfriend-can-be-with-he r-family story rarely has a happy ending. The guy gets frustrated soon enough because he's not able to bring in enough cash, and also because he can't quite fit in with the natives (Słupsk isn't exactly crawling with ex-pats). Tensions with the wife and in-laws escalate, and he goes back home beaten, broke and depressed, and usually separated from his wife and child.

You should seriously reconsider moving to Poland. Employment opportunities and earning potential are far higher there for you, and probably also for your girlfriend. Services and opportunities for your child are also more abundant.

If you have long-term plans of eventually moving to Poland, like in five or ten years, then learn the language, build up your qualifications, and get in some serious experience first. At this point,

however, with a baby on the way and without a clue in sight, you can ill afford to stake your fortune on an extremely risky, low-payout game.

I'm not living in Poland, but because there is so much Polski Sklep in Britain - maybe you schoud try the opposite way and establish an English Shop in Słupsk?

I think some poles would be curious - and maybe there are some Brits in that area. My observation (?) is, that the Brits tend not be as connected abroad as Poles. (Is that sentence correct?)

I don't think you need much money for that.

That's a truly terrible idea. There are very very few Brits in Slupsk, when I lived there for a year there were two of us, I know that since then one or two of the language schools there have started employing British native speakers but I'd be very surprised if there were even 20 Brits in Slupsk now. Slupsk is a pretty poor town; yes it is doing better now than it was when I was there but still people don't have much money, and they aren't very adventurous with their money either. Admittedly more than a few people in Slupsk have gone to work in England and some of the ones who have come back might want some things from the UK but they are certain to know somebody who could bring back what they want.


Don't even think about it until you are absolutely fluent in Polish and enough money saved to live on without earning a penny for at least two years. Yes it would be nice for your Mrs to see more of her family; however, it is going to be infinitely harder for you to make a living there, almost impossible in fact. Frankly it would be far easier for them to move to the UK.

If you don't speak Polish you will have limited success in selling anything, so basically you should consider the following ' What can I buy in Poland and resell in the UK to make a profit" I and many others who live in Poland could give you many ideas, rule number 1 in Poland nothing is for free, especially knowledge and advice.
