Stworzyć and Utworzyć. What would you say the main difference is between the words?

There are no difference.

That's the problem.

The sentence I'm trying to put nicely into English starts "Stworzono go, by utworzyć przestrzeń......".

In this senntence better use is "Stworzono go, by stworzyć przestrzeń", Im polish, but I can't tell you why this is better choice.

Actually, there is a difference. See Słownik języka Polskiego PWN,

So subtle. How would you translate the example I gave?

Edit.

My first thought was to be creative and render it as "It exists in order to create...". Perhaps that's cheating.

It was created to form a space.

It is easy to memorize, using this verb => noun pattern
stworzyć => stwór
utworzyć => utwór

"Stworzono go, by utworzyć przestrzeń......"

It was made to create room..

So, "Stworzyć" is create from beginning, fe. "Bóg stworzył ziemię (God created the world)" utworzyć is a just create, fe, "On utworzył drużynę (He created the team)".

That's quite a nice one - this should be both formal and very straightforward. You've given me an idea though. I might say " ''It was created to make ... space''

'It was created to make ... space''

either way it sounds OK

"Stworzono go, by utworzyć przestrzeń......".

It was created to make room/space...
stworzyć - to bring something into existence (sth original that didn't exist before), to create sth for the first time
utworzyć - just to make, the process can be repetitive

It's not very clear-cut but more or less along these lines.

edit: I see that's been said already; anyway, that would be my choice too

I'm from Poland and...
It exists in order to create (sth). - [To] Istnieje, by tworzyć (coś).

It was created to make space. - I think it is the best translation of "Stworzono go, by utworzyć przestrzeń".
