WHY IS SMS MASCULINE ANIMATE IN POLISH?

Anyone know why SMS in Polish is given the masculine animate ending in the accusative: Wyślij mi SMSa.
Shouldn't it be: Wyślij mi SMS. Is there any grammatical justification for the -a ending?

It should be. But the practise is different.

It is an inanimate noun ('cause it is, right?) and it doesn't end with 'a' or 'o' or 'e' or 'ę', so it's masculine.

People use this word not as an acronym but as if it was a 'normal' noun 'esemes'. If it was 'esemes' it would be inanimate masculine. And 'normal' words are more natural in use that acronyms, so in colloquial language people treat it as a 'normal' word.

New words usually take masculine animate endings... (it's one of current grammatical changes in pl language)

Prawdopodobnie najbardziej rzucającą się w oczy zmianą jest wypieranie rodzaju męskorzeczowego przez męskożywotny. Wiele słów które dotychczas były jednoznacznie nieżywotne, w języku potocznym, zwłaszcza w języku młodzieży, jest traktowanych jako żywotne. Objawia się to tym, że biernik jest równy dopełniaczowi nie zaś jak dotychczas mianownikowi. Pojawiają się takie formy jak "mieć pomysła" czy "obejrzeć filma" (na razie wyłącznie potoczne). Większość nowych słów odnoszących się do zjawisk niematerialnych przyjmuje rodzaj męskożywotny również w języku oficjalnym. I tak formy "dostać e-maila/SMS-a" są znacznie bardziej popularne od form "dostać e-mail/SMS".

I live in Poland now, and you hear both versions frequently.

I don't think anyone can say that one version is more correct than the other.

Does some august, authoritative body such as France's Académie Française exist in Poland to rule on lingusitic puirty and propriety? Does PAN do this?

The first one is more popular.
