I am debating with the spell: Aleksandra or Alexandra?

I live in Canada (I moved to Canada when I was a little girl with my family).

Thanks! :)

We named our son Aleksander when he was born in Poland, and now outside Poland he is one of those kids that always has to correct his name when people spell it wrong. Decide where he's going to grow up and choose that one.

Why wait till she grows up, it's not going to change anything, blimey, my name is an old English name yet people always spell it wrong!

I'd go with x spelling and save the poor child a life of frustration...take it from someone who knows :)

Amathyst, for as many times as I've read your response, I can't make sense of it.

If a kid/person constantly has to say "no it's aleksandra, not alexandra" they may get sick of it.

It's my two cents.

what if the kid won't live in Canada?
people have some weird names and are asked to spell them all the time... not only foreigners... how many spellings can there be of one name? many.

don't exaggerate.

Sorry, I misread your post, I thought you said "wait till he grows up" not where they grow up, apologies..But I think if she intends to live in Canada, she should go with the x ....

By the way Aleksandra or Alexandra would be female :D ...Either way a lovely name, my nephew is an Alexander, good strong male name! :)

do children go by their full name these days ? are nicknames a thing of the past ?

even some adults use short forms.

one has no idea how a name will be changed over time.

If you get your name spelt wrong on a daily basis (I do) its frustrating....Alexandra is the Western spelling..so why not make the kids life easy and spell it that way if they are going to live in a none slavic country...As for how many ways:

My name is Shelley, here are a few that people have come up with over the years!

Shelley (perfect 10/10)
Shelly (annoying!)
Sheley (wtf)
Shelee (wtf?)
Sheila (yeah, I think some people are deaf!)
Chelley (this was the most recent)

In polish name "x" looks pretentious and inelegant, if you ask.

...and the other way arguably has the same effect with anglophones !

If you live in Canada you should stick with x. You'll save your kid a lot of explaining in the future. Looks better on the resume as well.

No, we don't use this diminutive. It's a russian form of this name.

My beautiful cousin, Aleksandra, is called "Ola"; and her twin brother, Wojciech, is called "Wojtek".

My name is Alexandra and I live in a western non slavic country. People are almost always more likely to write "Aleksandra" or even "Alexsandra" (never met anyone or heard of anyone who write it that way, but people are still assuming that over Alexandra with a x only). I have to correct people all the time.

Feminine - Aleksandra - (no matter how it is spelt) will get called 'Ola', masculine Alexander will get called 'Olek'
