Learning Polish...looking for a software package?

Hi, I am about to deploy to Afghanistan for 6 months and would like to use alot of my down time to try and learn polish. I should have a few hours a day and I am looking for a software package for my laptop that will get me atleast started. My girlfreind is polish and she speaks amazing English and I am very keen to try an learn even a little by comparision! Being able to return in 6 months with something that i can then improve on by learning and speaking with her and her family would be amazing, any ideas?

I have found that Rosetta Stone is very good (well my partner compliments the little Polish that I know). However it is pretty pricey! It depends on how much you want to spend.

I would be interested to see what other people think. Maybe someone would suggest some 'worth-while' free software/online websites?

yeah rosetta stone is not a good option, the main problem with it is that it's too easy, and basically you don't learn anything if you aren't challenged a bit. Pimsleur is a much better initial option.

go supermemo for vocab, but you need grammar, listening, speaking and reading in addition, as supermemo is best for vocab. I worked best by using a range of different options, there is the (free) pitt uni polish course which is good for grammar. For listening and reading I haven't found any great on-line resources so I recommend the Hurra books and course. For my speaking I started a skype language exchange which I'm still doing after a year :)

I haven't tried the supermemo 'with a teacher' option, that might be a good way to go if you have cash to fork out and are looking for an 'all in one' option, but yeah rosetta stone is a terrible waste of money

I have tried Supermemo and really liked it. The last time i checked they had a free version which gave you some of the basics. I would also recommend byki.com. This is more for vocabulary. Really recommend you try the games as they do make the vocabulary stick in your head. Again, they have a free version and you can upgrade for a fuller version. I think you have to be online to do the supermemo one but you can download the byki one.

I recommend BYKI also, I have the full version and I can add my own flash cards when I need to remember something. It is a good place to start but making your own flash cards is labour intensive.

After a while I recommend that you get Polish lessons through skype or in person etc. Are there still Polish soldiers in Afganistan?

There should be an option for 'Polish - Miniphrase book' and you can access it there. One thing i will admit about this website is that it can be a bir awkward getting to the course. Have a look and let me know if you are successful.
