Hello all, Iv'e come to this forum looking for the correct spelling of a surname, pronounced Can-your-chef-ski; I'm a writer and it goes in a piece of fiction I'm working on. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Possibly Kanjorszewski, however, does a name that you can't spell really need to be in your book. Could you not pick something you can spell...it is fiction after all.

Perhaps it's (Koniuszewski) but the pronunciation would be con-you-chef-ski, where con is pronounced like in the word contradict and no r.

does a name that you can't spell really need to be in your book.

Yes the name I can't spell has to be used, it's the pronunciation that's the main thing, it has to be Can your chef ski.

Sorry to burst your bubble but Kanjorszewski does not sound natural to a native and a bit strange if you ask me. Even if one never came across a given surname before this one will always be a suspect to a native speaker as made up, there's no root word in it to associate with.

it's the pronunciation that's the main thing, it has to be Can your chef ski.

This statement speaks volume as to your intention, as for the punch-line I don't know about his skiing ability but my chef-can't-cook-for-sh*t.

PS. Your formula will not work in Polish no matter how much you insist.

The main problem is with the 'a' sound in 'can'. The closest equivalent in polish should be 'e' but Keniurszewski would sound weird in Polish.

Koniurszewski or Kaniurszewski could work, thought still artificial and pronounced slightly different.
