Language / Interslavic artificial language [35]

How much of it did you understand?

An interesting experiment.
I have seen similar videos before.
I think most of us will have a similar experience.
Sometimes you understand most of what is being said, sometimes just enough to understand the gist of what is being said and sometimes nothing!
Slav languages are similar but have moved so far apart over the years to make them pretty incomprehensible to each other.
My son and I have often watched football matches on Russian streams and understood most of the commentary, but that is simple language.
Still, the video was fun and interesting.

Food / Vodka for a Polish Wedding [40]

As someone who rarely touches spirits, I cannot really comment on this thread.
But from my experience of Polish parties I would strongly recommend you stick to beer or wine, unless you want to fall over, make a fool of yourself and get into a fight.

Or all three!!
Oh, and NEVER drink with the old guys...... they will drink you under the table..... LOL!!

Food / Vodka for a Polish Wedding [40]

how does a Polish person not know bimber?

Just like Dolno said.
Maybe it was not an idea brought over by our parents, or maybe it was bigger in Communist times.
I don't know.
As I said, I am not a great fan of spirits and until tonight have never heard of it.
Doesn't even sound Polish!

Food / Vodka for a Polish Wedding [40]

Honestly speaking, I can't really tell the difference

I am not a spirit drinker.
Maybe a glass for Christmas or New Year.
I do like some whiskies and bourbons and even brandy.
But to be honest, wodka has always left me cold.
I know, this is terrible coming from an ethic Slav....... but they all taste the same to me... of nothing!
The only one I could discern a taste from was Zubrowka.

Genealogy / Zaszczurynski - information on grandparents from Poland [12]

THeOther, I am sorry to disagree with you on this matter.

Strictly speaking he is right.
There was no Poland in 1914 and no Polish army either.
Hallers army started out as part of the French army.
They were Polish volunteers and fought for the allies in WW1.
After the war, when Poland got it's independence, many of them went to Poland to fight for Poland.

UK, Ireland / Do people still get married for passports, visas etc to stay in the UK? [7]

if people still got married to try and help ensure that they get to stay in the UK?

Yes, if people get married and one of them has a legitimate right to be in The UK, tbe partner will have no problem gaining the same rights.

The UK is not Nazi Germany, Russia or The USA.....
Yeah Iron, no need for that aggression.....

Polonia / Poland vs Italy vs Spain for an expat? [19]

You are outrageous!
I have been happily married for 30 years.
These experiences were a long time ago.
And I will not share them on this forum.

Polonia / Poland vs Italy vs Spain for an expat? [19]

For overall quality of life out of the cities you mentioned it would have to be Barcelona.
But there is the Catalan independence thing to think about.
But in terms of jobs, climate, culture, cuisine, friendliness, history, cost of living etc, it is the hands down winner.

Work / Will Brits working in Poland lose their jobs post Brexit? [20]

But one can hardly say who would sink deeper, EU or Britain. Its a death race

It will be EU.
Trust me.

Poles and other Slavs, save yourself from that madness that goes to damnation and get back to Slavic world !

That is not the answer for Poland.
Slavs that are not in The EU have nothing to offer.

Language / Is it too late for me to learn Polish..? [65]

Knowledge of foreign languages gives you a much wider perspective into culture, history and social issues

Agreed.
It also opens your eyes to how different cultures see, express or feel things.
I only speak English, Polish and French fluently.
But even just these three languages open my mind enormously.

Life / Poland's National Anthem "Mazurek Dąbrowskiego" (download mp3) [49]

Check Pawian-made post No 25 from 2010. :):)

I just did, and do you know what?
The Polish anthem moves me far more than the British one.....

Only the direct hotlink is lost.

I know, but I don't understand why they feel they have to do that.
Is it fear of copyright laws?

USA, Canada / How to find music by KSU in the United States [7]

I did quite like them.
Thanks Pawian, there is obviously more to you than meets the eye......
I will have to stop arguing with you so much..... ;-)

Life / Poland's National Anthem "Mazurek Dąbrowskiego" (download mp3) [49]

Sorry, but I don't see them Pawian.
What gets me though is that there are embedded videos in this thread that are still there from 2010.
Yet when I post Polish music videos they are deleted in 24 hours......
Can a mod or admin please explain this to me?

USA, Canada / How to find music by KSU in the United States [7]

KSU, when it comes to punk/post punk music, is my fav Polish group.

As a music fan, who was not particularly into punk music but has followed Polish popular music for some time, I was surprised that I had never heard of this band.

Not bad.
That is a good rating from a pre punk oldie...... :-)

UK, Ireland / Let's discuss Polish and British, only constructive (though we will digress) [60]

: Is it better to be good at everything, but lacking real professional quality

An interesting question.
I think that it depends on the work involved.
At the highest level, specialist knowledge is the most important thing.
At the lowest level, a wide range of skills is more important.
The Poles i have seen come to Britain since 2004 were mainly of the lower level.
Their success is down to their flexibility, wide knowledge of basic skills, hard work ethic and being prepared to work for relatively low pay.
Romanians are now trying to replace them but the only things they have over the Poles is working even harder than Poles for even lower wages,

They don't have the skills or knowledge of the Poles.
Sadly, at the upper end, we have relatively few Poles coming here.
If they are really clever, they will go to the USA.

Food / Bekon or boczek? [21]

that rind/outer skin of boczek piece is really inedible

Not when boiled.A bit tough I'll admit.
But I am a bit weird, I have been known to eat French suacisson sec and salami whole, without removing the skin
and some cheeses whole that some people remove the skin first.......... :-)

Which reminds me, in Alsace in France they do speck, which I assume is similar to German speck.
This is similar to Polish boczek but that skin is truly inedible... it would break your teeth.
