Genealogy / How to legally change your name in Poland? [15]

Can anyone tell me what happens if you had your name changed overseas as a child (and were born overseas) and you're trying to register your overseas birth certificate? The lady at the urząd doesn't know what to do. I even have a polish passport in my current name

Life / Do illegitimate children exist in Poland? Pregnancy before marriage. [3]

So I have an illegitimate child (meaning I am not married and have a child), which is completely normal in Australia. I visited a relative yesterday (maternal grandmother's cousin who is 84) and she kept saying how wonderful it is that my married cousin is finally expecting the 'long awaited first child of the new generation', a true blessing for the family etc. Amongst other things she did ask how my mum reacted to me having a child outside of wedlock. What happens in Poland if a lady gets pregnant before marriage and the guy is a total loser but abortion is illegal? Do polish people practice really safe sex? Does my child exist? How big of a sin have I committed?

Law / Registering in Poland foreign birth certificate with name change? [2]

When I was 5 my parents changed my last name from my dad's to my mum's. I've always gone by my mum's name and any document I've held has been in this name. I went to register my foreign birth certificate in the Polish office of Civil status and come across a problem because in Australia they have a newish policy where instead of giving you a separate change of name certificate and an updated birth certificate (like they used to) they list it all on the birth certificate (i.e. name given at birth and current name). The lady at the office had no idea what to do but said I may need to have my name registered as my dad's, then legally change it in Poland back to my current name. Is this the case? I've heard that people get to even have their married names as the name listed on their Polish birth certificate? I have a similar issue with my son because when he was born I gave him a really gross name (all sleep deprived from being a new mum) and when he was a few months old changed his entire name (first, middle and last names). Now not only would I rather avoid having him registered by the previous name, it would be next to impossible to get his dad to fill in any required paperwork. Has anyone dealt with something like this or knows anything more? The lady said they will be having a conference or something and she will ask there but it doesn't look too promising. If I plead with her, do you think she'd put it as my current name? Any advice please and thank you

Life / Polish gift giving customs, what to give bacia (grandmother) and other customs in Poland [6]

Hello all.
I'll be going to Poland in the near future and I plan to visit some family whilst there, my mum mentioned that there's a gift giving custom in Poland where the guest is usually expected to come with flowers and a bottle of wine or chocolates. I plan to visit my Babcia who is 84, what would I bring? I've never met her. I'd say she's too old for wine or chocolate but just flowers feels too bare. What about when visiting cousins (30-40yo), am I still expected to come with gifts or is it only old people? What price range should the flowers/wine/chocolates be in?

And what customs are expected of me when visiting my god parents? Any suggestions would be great! Thanks in advance

Law / Moving to Poland from Canada - documentation questions [3]

You will need a PESEL if you want to get a polish passport.
I don't know how it is from Canada but in Australia a return ticket costs the same (even cheaper) than a one way ticket. Why not get one just in case? You can always not board. Will you want to confirm your Polish citizenship? If so, you may need a few documents depending on how far your lineage links you back to Poland is. If you want to use your degree you may need to legalise it. If you want to use your license I recommend applying for an international drivers licence. I'm not sure about wiring money, I want to know this too.

Law / Confirmation of Polish citizenship of my mother (born in Poland) [9]

Merged:

How to confirm citizenship for Polish Mother?

Hey all.
So my mum was born in Poland in 1956 to Polish parents, married my Polish dad in Poland in 1985, and then they both immigrated to Australia in 1987. She would return to Poland every few years but hasn't since 2006.

How would I go about confirming her Polish Citizenship? She has a PESEL Number, her old Dowód Osobisty (which is no longer valid), her marriage and Divorce certificate (divorced in Poland in 1996), Birth certificate, an old expired Polish passport, and is Zameldowana in Poland.

From what I can search online, it seems easier to confirm my citizenship than it does her's even if I've never lived in Poland (as all I will need to do is attach her documents to mine, fill in a form and get my my dad's birth certificate - not have to go through archives looking for ancient documents that may have been destroyed). Renewing the passport is not an option as it expired in 2001 (she has held a Polish passport after this one but we haven't got it). I will be doing the confirmation for her in Poland myself, and my own at the same time.

Basically my question is: Are the documents she has enough to base her citizenship on, or will I need to source my grandparents' documents?
Any advice appreciated!
