News / Poland rejects H1N1 vaccine [28]

Kudos to the Polish! the Pandemrix H1N1 swine flu vaccine, which was made by British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline in 2009 has been causing lots of kids sick (narcolepsy) in Europe. Nasty stuff not used in the US, thanks God!!! Here's what it's like to go thru:

"...is plagued by hallucinations and nightmares. When she wakes up, she's often paralyzed, unable to breathe properly or call for help. During the day she can barely stay awake, and often misses school or having fun with friends. She is only 14, but at times she has wondered if her life is worth living."

USA, Canada / Better life in USA or Canada? - expats opinions and your comparison [143]

The Kiwis remind me a bit of Canadians

I lived down under for a few years: canucks aint even close. The Kiwis are as you described canucks above. NZ: great people n a beautiful country! Again, Canadians not even close to them, bro! But then you lived along the weed trail stretching from OR to WA, along that northwest carridor n you won't see that many non-whites until you cross the border to Vancouver, sorry, I mean, Hongcouver as been called over there :)

Never noticed any racist tendencies

hey rysavy,

Let me refresh your memory: way back in the late 90s, the Canadian Royal Airborne Regiment was disbanded by the canucks govt. Reason: during its presence in Somalia, the regiment exhibited an "outrageous racist" behavior towards the local populace. So "my dear," go figure! Happy MLK!

USA, Canada / Better life in USA or Canada? - expats opinions and your comparison [143]

I was in Los Angeles and walked around

A few things:
1) LA is very, very spread out, bro! You got downtown LA and adjacent areas, mostly made up of light mfg and some dilapidated dwellings. So most tourists are confined to downtown and NO ONE would go outside its area. Why? To get to those areas is a challenge, you need the wheels! Plus the downtown area is sitting at the grid of many freeways - unless you were the one fella walking on the 10 a couple days ago - you won't see that many people walking, especially tourists in crappy areas! These areas are not that bad but you might get bugged by homeless people, I mean a lot of them! And really there is not that much to see outside downtown. Why would you wanna go there then?????

2) Subway, or Metro Link, is only for commuters getting to/from downtown to adjacent areas. Again, very few tourists would take the Metro system. If you decided to, then get your head in a paper and read it or glue ur vlady face to the window, if you get a window seat and don't stare!!! Here people don't stare at other people, bro!

Bro, you gotta really chill!

They wear colourfull shirts and short at least in summer. Will have red hair and be very fat and tall.

hey vlad,

No need to get defensive..., bro. Some look like a Romanian gypsy fortune teller from Coney Island, no doubt, but, hey, I've seen some 300-pounders w/ a maple leaf too. Let's face it, diet aint too good on both sides of the border.

In U.S. you may get in real trouble if you arepoor and have no medical insurance

hey vlad,

some corrections:
Welfare - if you're dirt poor then your chances for getting free medical are better, say, if you make $20k or less, you aint getting it. So if you get sick or end up in ER, man, they'll take everything from ya, but, again, till 20k you're fine. Now, getting gov't cheese, not a prob, but aint enough to make on it; you end up in a project that is infested w/ drug users n other criminal scum. So staying on welfare makes you actually poorer w/ very, very few life prospects. Canada fares much better than the US, indeed!

Weather - I'm from NYC, oh, maann...ain't missing much of that am/pm pi..s, snow, ice, you name it! Cali weather I find to have been so far the best, bro! I'm glad you don't like LA! But lotta canucks flock to So Cali, thats fyi.

Culture - not sure about folks north of the border...I worked w/ some canucks abroad n they appeared very limited though knew a lot about hockey...To my shock, Canadians were very racists regarding non-whites, especially Asians, Vancouver often is called Hongcouver… Canadians appear kind, polite, et cetera, but I find all this to be a veneer...very superficial and feeling inferior to their southern neighbor. However, lotta entertainment talent comes from Canada...

Crime - gun control, but lotta bullying in school lately - a big case regarding a HS kid committing suicide. Their school system is less than adequate when compared to the US.

Econ - very cyclical, all depending on natural resources, which Canada has plenty. As long as China keeps making toasters n coffee makers n importing those resources, the loonie will stay very strong, stonger than the US dollar.

Would I recommand moving to Canda? yeah, this is a country that still offers some great opportunities...

UK, Ireland / Polonization of Britain - Tipping Point Confirmed in 2011 Census [97]

'perfidious Albion' btw, not 'perfidious british'

hey brains,

fyi, I used it in a context as an adj to describe Brits. Whatever, whatever, babe! Just watch those vowels so you dont sound too funny...btw, you do, right?

the action of some idiotic Poles

hey isthat4fact,

listen whos talking here...A fella w/ a BS (literally) degree who doesn't know that his pompous queen is still the head of Canada n Australia...who dares to call Poles, idiots. isthat4fact, you’re amazing. You asked for some links...go google, don't be lazy, bro. No one is gonna give u anything on a silver platter, bro - you yourself, pal, gotta do some digging. Perhaps that's why you ended up in Poland teaching English cuz you couldn't get a job back in the UK, thus making Poles scapegoats for your miserable life. Don't blame others and/or the system, get a good education...Or you may end up as another Martin-the-pool-guy over here. Sorry, the truth might hurt, but that's what it was, my friend.

UK, Ireland / Polonization of Britain - Tipping Point Confirmed in 2011 Census [97]

a great time in history, and food, housing etc were short

hey jonny,
agree w/ ya! I put "ask" in quotes because the Brits never foced them to leave the country, they just "asked"...due to the above cited issues, and, among others, such as the Brit gov't was afraid that the Poles might decide to "attack" commies (? it's not easy to cross the Channel being unnoticed n then head to Poland, right?) under Gen Anders directions, thus upsetting Stalin. Bottom line, they wanted to get rid of them.

Again, there is some truth to it, but, on the other hand, the Brits want to put a positive spin on this whole tragic situation. That's why they are called perfidious British, I guess, w/o no reason.

were not still *technically British* as you put it.

hah, hah, that's a good one, bro! The Poles were "asked" to move (or face lower rations) to the countries which were still de facto under the Brits.

Poles who went to Canada went there by choice

That's another good one, too! The British pompous queen is still an official "head" of gov'ts in Canada n Australia (as you, obviously, know, there's a huge movement in both countries to get rid of her), which are a part of Common Wealth, just in case you forgot...meaning that she, ie, your pompous queen, can dissolve both parliaments in Canada n down under. Oh, yeah, forgot to mention that some Poles were sent to Rhodesia too, which, obviously, according to your public schooling, back then (in the 50s) was not a British property, right?

I'll tell you what, bro: Uncle Goebbels would be very proud of ya! Pls don't breed...
Gotta get another cupa coffee, you're really funny, pal!

Britain against the Nazi's and were welcome as refugee's after the war.

Oh, c'mon, Pete, you gottta be kidding me! The Brits shipped about 20 thou Poles to Canada (and fewer numbers to Australia, South Africa), which is still technically under the Brits! They were not welcome in the UK! And the beloved Polish hero, Gen Anders, was not even given a military pension; he ended up working in some kinda sh..ty factory till his death...That's really kosher, Pete!!! So don't give me that sh..t about England's generosity, okay!?

I'm confident many younger English speakers will grow to fully comprehend that other countries and peoples are not there simply for them to visit, occupy, exploit or ignore.

why not? That's what the Brits did during their hegemony whent they "ruled" the world. Maybe bad Karma is catching up w/ them now. Hey, look, Poland got stiffed back in the 40s by the "wise men" who were sucking up to Stalin. Way back I saw a Canadian program about the Polish soldiers in WW2: They didn't let the Polish to march in the victory parade! While others were marching to the tunes of the Her Majasty band, those poor fellas (Polish pilots) were sitting in a bar...Hadn't the "wise men" sold Poland to the Soviets, Poland mightve been better off economically now, meaning people wouldnt have to flee the country as refugees and/or economic migrants. I'll tell the Brits: suck it up now! It's a pay back time! I hope Poles will flood the island till it tips over! (Literally)

Study / Bachelor's in aerospace in Poland - how high is the level? [23]

if you want to do it, do it at the Uni of Tech in Warsaw. The dept you want to check out is called, by its Polish acronyms, MEL (aerospace n somthing else). There is a lot of Polish scientists in Cali and on the east coast working at top unis. They all came to the US in the 70s & 80s. (And my uncle was one of them.) They have specialized in a theoretical aspect of aerospace. On top of that, some are brilliant computer scientists n employed by gov't agencies, say, NASA. They all sound like Edward Teller, having a very thick accent. But, hey, that's the way to go bro! Btw, it's also easy to get a scholarship to top grad schools here as a MEL grad. Good luck!

Life / The unacceptable side of Polish culture [48]

Talking about some indiff just look at the recent NYC subways killings: remember the Asian guy being pushed down on the tracks? The poor guy was tryina climb back BUT no one pulledem up! At the same time, other guy was snapping pics of him while he was trying to get himself outta the pit and later sold those pics to the Post! Tha's f...ing unbelievable! Was he Polish? nope. The pushed guy was Asian; the guy who did the pushing was black; the photographer was Indian; and the rest, who was watching the (reality show) drama, was a mix of whites and Hispanics.

News / Failures of Poland and Tusk`s government [191]

Like Balzer said in FT, each party must recognize that small business indeed is an engine of economic growth n rather than choking it (w/ heavy taxation) the gov't should cut it some slack. Successful Polish busienss people (working their butts off) are getting punished for being successful! (Btw, successful means you start your own business and grow it.)

News / Failures of Poland and Tusk`s government [191]

I'm w/ ya! The prob is the so-called magmnt gurus tryina sell their expertise to gov't and thus to make money off their naivete. Again, Korea has a very, very good rail system - fast, reliable though you may have to inhale some kimchi from time to time - a very efficient power system, providing one of the lowest rates in the world, and Korea Telco, offering onea the fastest Internet connections (all fiber optic) in the world. Guess what? they want to deregulate or privatize them! Sadly, US-based mgmnt consulting groups are feeding the Koreans w/ these ideas for a fee, of course! It might be the same case in Poland. Buyer be aware!

News / Failures of Poland and Tusk`s government [191]

industry is actually privatised and doesn't go into the hands of another government

Good point! Way back in the early 90s, California decided to deregulate (for the benefit of Cali consumers) its power industry. W/ little, or none at all, oversight, SDG&E, instead of building power plants and thus increasing power output, started buying (and speculating) power from nearby states. Guess what happened? An everage electirc bill went thru the roof from $20 to $100! The company went into Chapter 11 and their response to high mthly bills was to use energy eff light bulbs! Perhaps, after all, breaking up a state monopoly aint too good, or you might end up w/ rollbacks, blackouts, etc. I dunno much about Polish Telecom but having French controlling them, that's not a good news. I worked w/ French mgmnt back in Korea (Carrefoure) and they were horrible! And what's funny, as you know French being French, is that the French mgmnt insisted on speaking English while holding meets! Gotta tell ya: It was a challange having the Koreans and French speaking English!

Hey Gum,

All this stuff is in Polish and probably sensational! Again, the bottom line: you need PIS..ed-offs and that Gay Party (whatever the Polish name) to keep an eye on the current gov't. And then if you don't like the regime go and vote it out! But don't bi..tch n moan n use skinheads to advance your political agenda, thus making Poland look stupid!

Life / Is Poland a poor country? [578]

PiS created National Anti-corruption Service

Gum,

quite frankly I dont care who and what created. The US State Dept cited Poland for its curruption and ineptness way back, ie, when Kaczynkys (spell?) were in office. Now let me ask you this: if they were not that corrupt why PIS got bumped off in the past elections? Bottom line: PIS or Tuskism, they need to clean this sh..t if they want to grow and get more foreign investment. And PIS's hooking up w/ skinheads/Legia hooligans ain't helping much.

Life / Is Poland a poor country? [578]

Spanish and Greeks banned

It coud also be a lingo issue - may not be able to speak other Euro lingos, sorry but most Euro guys' English is just horrible in spite of Brits' English domination in this part of the world. Plus Poles are probably more risk takers, sometimes bordering on a cavalier behavior. But then, hey, no pain no gain, right?

Back to the beef - Eurostats paints a pretty good pic of Poland's econ except a GDP slowdown. Inflation under control, which has never been an issue in the past few years, and the jobless rate might edge up one procentage point in '13.

Being poor or not, Poland has made a huge prograss in the past 20 years after switching from a planned to a market-driven econ. So comparing Poland to its western neighbors, whose developement has been uninterrupted since the US had poured money in the region after WW2, ain't right. They were rolling while Poland was making Polish Fiats, the so-called "state of the art" vehicle, according to the commies' propoganda. See some youtube pic from the old Poland (People's Rep) and now; that's a day n nite diff! In 20 yrs, not too bad!

Final note: T-Mobile considers the Polish market being saturated, meaning there are two or more cells per households. On top of that, each household has a motor vehicle and having a flat screen (LCD) tv aint a big deal over there. Polish tend to whine a lot about there current sit but, hey, there are more Beemers n Benzes over there then in the US:) Yep, they're poor.

Hey, gum, btw, as said earlier, curruption (40th on the list of the least corrupted nations) and ineptness that's what slows down Poland and it just didnt happen overnite, ie, under Tusk's, and it probably goes back to PIS..ed when in power.

News / Failures of Poland and Tusk`s government [191]

Polish family owes thus 40 000 because of Tusk debts thats quite a lot

You are right, gum, but again the US has a huge deficit and there's still a market for their TBs - as I was checking lately, there was a pretty good demand for Polish paper too. Plus Polish gov't still owns lots of good brand name properties (eg, LOTO) and they can get rid of it. Again, I wouldn't worry that much about the deficit but I'd be more concerned about corruption, ineptness (both political n economic, say, not running trains, freeways being not finished or a stupid bidding process, remember the Chinese?); PIS demagogues (let's face it they're are morons, as Brzez said, no programs, only marching n screaming "hang' em high"). C'mon, bro!

Life / What is Poland B as opposed to Poland A and the otherway-round. [45]

You'll always have some regions considered dogs - just look at Europe (North vs. South), the Americas (North vs. South), et cetera - that has to do w/ political and cultural aspects of that region. Pouring tons of money won't solve the probs. Political scientists and sociologists have written tons of how-to-fix-it books, all pretty much useless.

fascist theocratic entities such as the "Jewish State of Israel" and the "Islamic Republic of Iran."

Hey bieg,

easy cowboy, a stmnt like that borders on a line of anti-semi n might open a can of worms (Polish anti-semitism). Dunno where you get your info, but fyi the state of Isreal is the ONLY demo state in that crazy region! And comparing it to Iran is insane n shows your lack of geo-political knowledge or simply put it, ignorance. (I hope itis the former.)
