Law / Help regarding domestic situation regarding withholding of child's ID in Poland [4]

My girlfriend's sister is married, they are both Polish and have a daughter however the marriage is falling apart, they are basically living separately but are technically still married.

The gentleman in this story has taken his daughter (2 years old) with him to Poland under the rouse of visiting his family and has now decided he is staying and will not give his daughter to her mother or her Polish ID card.

What are the rights of her mother and what can she do if he will not release not only her but also the ID?

TIA.

Language / Ty ślepaku, what case is ślepak in and why? [15]

Yep, if you read around there is talk of this case being scrapped... in reality I hear it constantly!

(to be honest I'm all for the simplification of Polish!)

Love / How to read the signals from this Polish Guy? [19]

Whatever you're thinking, you need to meet him first and be safe about it. You can't possibly know someone without spending real time with them first.

Life / Polish word for 'queue' [18]

There is no such thing as a queue in Poland only trying to enable everybody to do whatever it is they are trying to do as quickly as possible without causing the process to slow down.

I love when a Pole pronounces the word queue for the first time :) quee ;)

Life / Polish history as a school subject in western Europe [24]

Did you have anything about Poland or eastern europe in your history class during school?

A little but not much. So little I barely remember it.

The level of ignorance about Poland in the UK is generally high and most couldn't find it on a map without help or time.

I've been told that Poland is near the North Pole hence it's name and that it's constantly covered in snow.

Language / chodźmy vs idźmy? [32]

My 10 pence.

Chodzić - to come

Chodź! - Come!

Iść - to go (by foot)

Idź! - go!

So...

Chodźmy
Idziemy

They both mean lets go/we're going.

Simple. It's not really a big deal unless you think about it too much.

Language / "Widzę stół"- Trying to learn Polish [14]

You're doing well for a start. :)

May I make a suggestion which I went through myself? Learn to write well in English as this will undoubtedly help you in the future with Polish. Don't say ill because it does not mean I'll and i is a word in Polish so always use the English I.

Small things make a difference and in my studies I have found I had to learn lots about my own language in order to learn Polish.

Learn the meaning of these words (you'll need them!):

Noun
Verb
Singular
Plural
Adjective
Gender
Conjugation
Declination
Grammatical Case

Language / My struggle learning the Polish language [10]

Hi Aj,

I started learning Polish about 4 years ago and I still don't think I'm much good to be honest. However I do understand a lot and know lots of vocabulary and can get by as long as nothing unusual happens (in shops for example). It's an incredibly difficult language for anyone who's primary language is English to learn. We don't think the same way in terms of how we use verbs and grammatical cases are a complete nightmare!

When you say you can understand, do you mean you can understand everything? I'd be very happy with yourself if you can!

I'd recommend some resources to get you going which have really helped me (and believe me when I say I've tried lots of things!).

Buy the book 301 Polish verbs by Klara Kanecki. This was a revelation to me in terms of how Polish verbs look as when you open the page to any verb you can see all of it's forms and realise how verbs conjugate.

Also I'd recommend you try an audiobook namely the Michael Thomas series starting with Foundation Polish. Get yourself a notebook and sit listening to the audiobook as the format is that of a teacher with 3 students and you being the third student.

Also if there is one thing I've learned it's that learning a language is a lifelong goal and unless you want to dedicate all of your time to it then don't expect miracles! Just being able to answer some simple questions is an achievement in itself.

If you feel like it then feel free to send me a private message and we can exchange email addresses and I'd be happy to chat with you in greater detail.

Pozdrawiam (regards) i powodzenia (good luck),
Chris
