Travel / Poland traffic signs are confusing.. Do you agree? [30]

White town name on a green background changes no speed rules, it's only when you see the black buildings on a white background that it changes back to 50 km/h. For eg, you may enter the actual city (White Gdańsk on a great background) but there is no built up city sign (black building on a white background) so you can still drive what ever the previous speed limit was, probably 90 km/h if outside the city on a single carriage way. That white on green is only information, no rules apply to it. Hope that all made sense ;)

Life / Driving test, English speaking driving school in Warsaw? [95]

I'm English and took my driving exam (in English) a year ago in Gdańsk. I found the theory test to be pretty simple. One of the ladies at PORD told me which cd I should buy for practicing, 20zl new with about 2,000 questions. I just spent a few days going over them so by the time I took the exam I knew all the answers. I didn't have to do anything involving cones, and the only reversing I did was during that J bend at the exam centre. Although I passed my theory first time it took me a couple of tries to pass the practical.

If I can give advice to anyone, it would be just to chill out, do your best, and if you don't pass so what? Take the exam again :) It's not as though your life depends on passing first time ;) ( this is the advice I should've given myself as it's the most stressed out I've ever been in my life!)

Life / Any English language channels on Poland cable TV? [8]

Yeah Comedy Central used to be like that on NC+ but now I can change it into English. It's a good idea to reboot your decoder every now and again to update the Channels.

Law / Can you drive after passing exam or do you have to wait for your license to come ? [3]

So, I passed my driving exam on Monday and was wondering if Poland is like the UK were you can drive straight after you've passed the exam, or do you have to wait for your document ? In the Uk, the paper you receive after passing the exam is enough until the license is ready..........It seems like this would be too easy for Poland so I assume not ;)

Life / Want to watch BBC iplayer in Poland? [59]

Install the plugin mediahint to Firefox and away you go. It's free and works a charm. I use chrome for normal browsing and Firefox for when I want to be in the uk, plus it also works with some American sites too.

Food / Where to buy British mature Cheddar Cheese and salted butter in Poland? [289]

Where are you?

Gdansk

Get thee to a mammoth Tesco'ery. Your eyes will fall upon the deli counter or the cheese aisle, and behold there four kinds of cheddar.

Lo, you will be satisfied, but harketh at the pieces of silver leaving thy clutches, for they will be many.

Haha, yeah I've seen them, just not brave enough to try them, are they any good ? As good as the one which used to be in Biedronka or that Delux stuff which used to be in Lidl ?

UK, Ireland / Renewal of British passport in Poland (how long does it take?) [27]

that's very fast ....... they can renew it that quick?

Haha, the guy on the other end of the phone was shocked when I called just to check if they had received it and he told me that its already on its way back! The even stranger thing was that I received it back without even paying for it yet. They had a problem taking funds from my account but still sent me the passport........ I think I'm just that 1 lucky one..

Did you get your old passport back, out of interest?

Yes got it back, they just snip the corner off it. It came back a couple of days after the renewed one

UK, Ireland / Renewal of British passport in Poland (how long does it take?) [27]

I sent mine off by courier to the UK last month, it was printed off and sent back within a day ! Craziness I know. There is no need to go through any embassy, Just print off the app form for applying outside UK and send it to the Liverpool Passport office (all stated in the form) and they'll post it back to you.

Food / Where to buy British mature Cheddar Cheese and salted butter in Poland? [289]

Lidl are now as we speak selling three types of cheddar cheese, their Deluxe range :::::))))))

Scottish mature coloured cheddar, Isle of man vintage reserve cheddar (15 months), and West country farmhouse cheddar (9 months).

I have tried the west country one and I have to say, it's good, better than the one they have for British week (which I also liked), , 6.99zl for 240g

ENJOY ;)

Travel / Is there a healthy expats scene in Poland? (drinks, food, golf, etc.) [143]

I know some British/American people who send their kids to such schools in Poland. What's the point? If at least one parents first language is English why would you even consider sending them to such a place, surely they'll grow up fluent anyway? Got a 5 year old daughter who is fluent in both Polish and English.

Before any of the usual suspects jump in and say 'its not a school just for English/American kids' I do know that, I'm only asking the question of sending those kids, and of course I'm assuming said kids are bilingual in Polish and English already.

Law / Open a little cafe in krakow ! Any tips [14]

You might have a point! All kebabs here are Polish'd up - cabbage, that big bread thing etc etc. Would be great to get a 'real traditional' Turkish or even Greek kebab with a lovely fresh flatbread fresh salad and decent quality meat. A real kebab is not such an unhealthy thing, fresh salad good meat etc..... Gdansk needs a good one too.
