Travel / Information on flying from USA to Warsawa next spring [5]

Try Polish Airlines. They have direct flights to Poland from Toronto, Chicago and NY (cheap connecting flights from other north American cities). The best time to buy a ticket for 2015 would be the Boxing week (Dec 24 -Dec31). I did it last Boxing week to fly in June this year. I paid CAD 740 including all taxes and fees for a ticket to Gdansk and back ( Toronto-Warsaw-Gdansk-Warsaw-Toronto) I spent a week in Gdansk and a week in Warsaw.

Try five star hotels in Poland. They are relatively inexpensive if you book them in advance and often are cheaper than 2 or 3 start hotels. I was checking the prices with Trivago but didn't book with them(I book directly with the hotels). Make sure that a location of the hotel is good. ( I can help you to determine a good or bad location in Warsaw)

Write your relatives in Poland in Polish. I can translate it for you if you need help.

Language / My Grandmother called me Stoddy Bush when i grew a beard, what does that mean? [3]

busz = the bush (area of thick vegetation in Africa or Australia)

Busz is a funny way of describing a thick untrimmed hair that grows without any maintenance. One can have busz on face, chest, back and in other areas :)

I don't know what stoddy is

We say: gęsty busz (gensty bush) - g in Grace = thick bush
(copy and paste gęsty busz into: ivona.com/us/ and choose Polish to hear it)

czarny bush = charny bush or any other hair colour - siwy =grey, rudy = red

Genealogy / Family name of Slyszko(w) [3]

Rusiły belongs to the catholic parish in Podedwórze. Therefore, I would look for a cemetery there since all cemeteries (except Jewish and Russian Orthodox) are owned by the Church.

address:
Church Podwyższenia Krzyża Św.
Podedwórze 46, 21-222 Podedwórze
gm. Podedwórze, pow. Parczew, woj. lubelskie
tel. (83) 379-50-19
Here is the list of all towns and villages that belong to that parish (in () number of residents and distance in km)
Opole (245), Podedwórze (296), Antopol (123-6 km), Bojary (61-5 km), Grabówka (72-5 km), Hołowno (257,3-5 km), Kaniuki (31-7 km), Mosty Wieś i ZR (259,6-7 km), Niecielin (22-5 km), Piechy (95-4 km), Rusiły (243-1 km), Zahajki (57-10 km), Zaliszcze (164-5 km).

You need to remember that in this part of Poland many people are Christian (Russian) orthodox. You need to know if you are looking for a catholic or orthodox cemetery.

Here is the map that shows where people with the last name Słyszko live in Poland.
Most of them live in Parczew that is 28 kms away from Rusiły

Travel / Good automatic car rentals in Poland? [10]

Few years ago I rented a car from Polservice . Very happy with the car and service:
firstrentacarpoland.com

These companies also rent cars with automatic transmission.
deltaautorentals.com
easycarrental.pl/index2.html

And remember you need to have International Driver's Licence to rent a car in Poland. In Canada CAA issues this licence and it costs $20. I assume that AAA does it in the States.

Genealogy / Glownia family origin in poland? [4]

Your family name is not Glownia as such last name doesn't exist in Polish. It is most likely Głownia
Here is the map showing where in Poland people with the last name Głownia live: moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/g%25C5%2582ownia.html

If you have your grandfather's a passport then you have the information.
Also, I am quite sure that your grandfather's first name in his passport isn't Ludwig but Ludwik. If you are searching for the info you should be more careful with details.

Genealogy / Zajaczkowski - Searching for relatives in Warsaw [4]

I've tried the city phone book, though I think my lack of Polish fluency hindered my search since not a single Zajaczkowski turned up!

The Polish spelling of your last name is: Zajączkowski. When searching Polish records online it is very important that you type an Ą and not an A

Also, Wrobleski is a very uncommon last name in Poland. The website moikrewni lists only 5 people in Poland with that last name (none in the Warsaw area). On the other hand Wroblewski (Polish spelling: Wróblewski) is very common. Are you sure that Marek's last name is spelled without the second w ? There are quite few people named Marek Wroblewski in the US phone directory. Perhaps you can use it to search for your cousin?

FYI: your father's name in Polish: Zdzisław Zajączkowski

According to the website moikrewni, there are 273 people in Warsaw whose last name is Zajączkowski. You need more info, like your father's birth certificate, old letters from the relatives, etc. to locate your cousins.

Genealogy / Gracyasz - can't find anything on family name or history [12]

Look also for Gracjasz. Gracyasz and Gracjasz are pronounced in Polish exactly the same. And the name version with "j" would be more common.

There is a record of Michał Gracjasz from Chicago who served in the Haller's Army

Gracjasz........Michal.......Chicago..............IL.....37.......250. .A

genealogiapolska.pl/histories/haller_g-i.php

but there is also Michał Gracyasz

Genealogy / Where is Snowia in Poland? (pre war) [13]

the name from the title should be Snowie in the nominative but it still remains just a thought up place

Snów but w Snowie or Snowiu. You can say either way. Perhaps Belorussian pronunciation had some influence here.
Check this out about pałac w Snowiu:

There is a title of a book ' Do Snowia i dalej' which translates To Snowia and further.

Genealogy / Polish childs name in church book - give me opinion what it says [6]

I would say that Josephus and Cecila are shown as the Godparents. Ux. is short for the Latin uxor wife of. So the left column could be showing the names of the Godparents: Josephus Gąsior and Cecilia wife of Joannis Stasik. Right side most likely provides info regarding the parents of the child, the date and place of marriage and mother's name. I would say that the parents were married in 1913 and Anna Dobrzynska, probably the mother, was born in 1889. Obviously this is impossible if the child was born in 1856 as you say. So my theory must be wrong.

What is shown on the very left side of the church book?

Nineteen century baptism record always contained: day, month and year of the child birth, day, month and year of the child's baptism, name of the father and often his occupation, first and maiden name of the mother, names of godparents, sometime godfather's occupation, priest name as well.

Zazulka: a mish -mash of information that hasn't been processed properly that causes some sort of confusion. More like a big mess in your head.

Sorry Zazulka, to me it still looks like confusion ;-)

Yes, you can call it a confusion but for eg. you can't say that people with dementia who are confused have a groch z kapustą w głowie. You can say you have groch z kapustą if I gave you 5 different ways how to get to a specific destination you are asking about and you still don't know how to get there. Do you feel the difference? It's more like a confusion due to too much infomation, conflicting messages.

Zazulka: a dziś mam w głowie groch z kapustą.

Zazulka: rżnąć głupa

Zazulka: pocałować klamkę
