That's funny that "greatest hits" translates to "the best of" in Polish. lol!

yeah, in most cases it will be "the best of" but there is no one word reserved for such compilation. So the names of the abums can differ very much.

"Kolekcja" (collection) can be a key word here as well. "Przeboje" (hits) can be useful.

Złota kolekcja = Golden collection
Najlepsze przeboje = The best hits

If you are looking for "the best of t.love" the official compilation of their best songs is named "BesT.love"

If you like I can look for the best albums for you. Just tell me what Internet stores you take orders in.

In Poland there are 3 categories of cult movies:

1. COMEDIES (most cult movies belongs to this category)
2. historical movies (Potop, Faraon, Krzyżacy, Ziemia Obiecana etc.)
3. critically acclaimed movies which titles probably every Pole knows but probably has never watched it (Człowiek z żelaza, Człowiek z marmuru, Kanał, Popół i diament, Amator, Dekalog, Trois couleurs trilogy, Nóż w wodzie, Rękopis znaleziony w Saragossie, Sanatorium pod klepsydrą). You may check every movie on imdb under Polish name to see if it is intresting for you.

There was a Neorealism in Italy and Nouvelle Vague in France... Poland also had it's own movement in cinematography called - "Kino moralnego niepokoju" (Cinema of moral anxiety) and most of the movies I mentioned in 3rd category falls into that movement.

If I was to suggest you some movies I would give you names some less known movies which are not so arty. A good example is 'Cwał' - not cult movie but really good one and not so intelectual or 'Europa, Europa' by Agnieszka Holland. Earlier I suggested you a movie called 'Rewers' which was released in 2009 and was a kind of fresh air in Polish cinema.

But let's back to cult movies for a one more moment. There are also some cult tv series:
1. Stawka większa niż życie
2. Czterej pancerni i pies
3. Alternatywy 4
4. Zmiennicy

Check wiki; (links are in English)

As for Jan Brzechwa - he was a writer of children peoms not a perforemer of the song. The performer of the song was an actor Andrzej Stockinger. I believe that the group name was Czwórka Szacha but I'm not 100% sure of that. I don't know the name of the album and I doubt if you can buy it.

Does Henryk Wars also have a "greatest hits" album

Certainly not dedicated one. Just look for "Piosenki starego kina", "Przedwojenne szlagiery", "Piosenki przedwojenne" (these are the titles that google has suggested ;). Or... you might find them on Youtube ;)

"greatest hits" in the Polish language?

The best of ,

There is some compilation of Dżem hits called "Złota kolekcja" (but look for 2 cd edition)

Life / Differences in Polish, American and British mentality [237]

Let's keep it in English it's disrespectful to others. The money went to my mom i saw my father give it to her, when he left for Spain we lived off that money. Kids were fed and clothed for it, he didn't spend it on vodka and hookers.

So you admit that your father was a part of regime? I was asking where those maney stolen by regime went...

communists got what they deserved, anything to help speed up the fall of the regime.

You're hopeless.

Ok. I wanna finish the discussion. Today I learn something new. Thank you all.

Btw. I would like to ask some foreigners is it also accepted in other countries to steal and under what conditions...

Wstyd powinien mieć reżim który okradał ludzi przez dekady z pieniędzy które im się należały

i gdzie te pieniądze szły twoim zdaniem?

gdy się komuś oddaje czuje się ulgę i dumę , nie wstyd ;)

komu oddałeś? Polsce?

ok, So go ahead and explain to me why my father was stealing milk from the factory

ask him. Do you suggest that those who didn't work in mleczarnia were starving? Maybe he was also looking for excuses for his greedy (no bo w końcu skoro można mieć 2 butelki mleka zamiast jednej...)

Puella I’m asking you a question would you steal food for yourself and your kids if you were starving?

I won't get into that manipulation of your. Pennboy's dad wasn't starving.

Half the people in the country took things from work, people in factories took parts and tool,

Half of the school is cheating on tests - do you tell your kid to cheat as well?

people in factories took parts and tool, railway workers sold rails, people in stores stole food, people in administrative positions took more valuable items he who didn't lived in misery, that was the reality.

yes and they steal still if they just have any opportunity.

Your question is without the necessary context. Let me ask question as well. Would you steal food if you were starving?

It's bs. Nobody was starving.

To reanimate discussion I would like to turn back to this issue:

And yes, people here do pretend not to be Polish. I won't point fingers but if one has a Polish nickname and yet you say you're not only NOT from Poland, but you don't even speak Polish, there is something to think about. If people claim that English is their native language but their sentence structure or their vocabulary doesn't reflect that, there's something to think about.

Many people here have Polish wifes and families or friends. Why do you think it's so hard to think of Polish nickname? I can think of English one, that's not a problem - does it mean I'm English?

Actually I still can't think of many users who have Polish nicknames and possibly could be Poles.

So who you exactly mean?

Really??? one person was responsible for 40 million lacking basic items? ODD. One person taking things for 1 year (1988) made all peoples lives harder throughout 45 years of communism.

1 person multiple X times makes huge number.

I'm saying that everyone felt like the government has been taking, stealing from the people for yearsss

Now they also feel that. Do you encourage people to steal?

I am going to purchase all of the movies you mentioned on DVD so I can chat with my friends about it.

Oh, hold a minute. I was trying to give you a wide range of genres from newest things to the oldests. Maybe read about those movies before you buy it.

What do you like more? Comedies or dramas?

1. Seksmisja - cult comedy of the 80s, about world without men
2. Miś - cult comedy of the 80s, about life under communism
3. Rewers - new movie, comedy about communism but not cult
4. Cwał - drama about times of early communism and horses, really good movie but not cult, you might like it
5. Kanał - very important movie in History of Polish Cinematography
6. Dekalog - critically aclaimed series of short movies, cult dramas
7. Nóż w wodzie - first movie of Polański
8. Sanatorium pod klepsydrą/Rękopis znaleziony w Saragossie - surrealistic movies, cult but difficult

If you want more cult old polish comedies:
1. Kingsajz (the same director as in Seksmisja, surrealistic comedy about... dwarfs)
2. Rejs (cult but I'm afraid that foreigner won't find it funny)
3. Alternatywy 4 (serial about inhabitans of some block of flats...)
4. Sami swoi (comedy about Polish hicks... I'm not sure if foreigners will find it funny)
5. Jak rozpętałem II Wojnę Światową (comedy about clumsy soldier of World War II)

But only the best that everyone loves!

That's difficult if not impossible
I wanted to propose something about singing poetry but it's not good stuff for karaoke.

For karaoke good would be:

1.Dżem

2.Perfect

3.T.love

t would have made him look but stealing from PRL was a good thing.

Penn he wasn't stealing from PRL. He was stealing from PRL citizens who as a result couldn't get many things which were constantly lacking... guess why?

Polish mentallity:
- looking for excuses for thefts
- looking for excuses for cheating ("schools demand too much unimportant knowledge, so I'm excused for cheating")

British mentallity:
- it is unacceptable to steal
- it is unacceptable to cheat

American mentallity:
- I'm too proud to steal
- I'm too proud to cheat

I'm not sure why you have issues with understanding that.

He does not. He's just messing around. I just can't understand why he doesn't change the song from 'treason' to 'theft'...

Ok, unless anyone has trouble with reading comprehension, i think we established that Penn's father wasn't a communist. The fact that the factory made some military equipment doesn't not mean his father was responsible for the oppression of democracy in the Eastern block. He worked at a factory, he didn't run it. I doubt he had much of a say about what was made there and where it was shipped.

So what? As I said before it's better to be a communist than a thief. Period.

And for all the self-righteous paragons of virtue here, the fact that Poland is still perceived as a corrupt country makes you hypocrites

it's still corrupted because of people who say it's ok to steal because everyone does it. Guess when have they learn it?

I bet if you were in the same situation, you would steal that factory steel or whatever without a second thought about it.

Harry didn't say a word about stealing issue, yet. I wonder why...

So we have 3 categories: People who say...
1. that commies were thieves and those who weren't commies weren't thieves even if they were stealing (PennBoy, Havok)
2. that thieves were commies because they were thieves (Ironside, Harry)
3. that thieves are thieves (me)

Who's right? ;)

I think it's really presumptuous to say that is a system where everyone was stealing one person is guiltier than the other one.

For instance, my father was stealing milk from the factory where he worked at

And now you wonder why Poles are considered as a nation of thieves...

I know it’s shameful but that was the system back than.

Oh it's just like cheating at schools now. A part of a system...

It has to do with you having this idea of what is right and wrong.

I don't believe in Catholic Church. You got wrong adress...
And it's my parents' upbringing not church's.

Communists robbed all Poles!!!

No not communist. People like your father did it, regardless of their political views!

hat Catholic Church has brainwashed you, told you what to do, how to feel about certain things, meanwhile they steal from the people take their money take their services to build for free

What it has to do with your father?

Puelka remember, the people who accomplish something in life are the ones who take risks,

and who steals?

Puelka remember

And please stop patronizing me. You can't even imagine how much I'm disgusted of you and your dad!

Harry, can you explain the source of your expertise in all things Polish, and when you worked for the good of Poland?

he was a Peace Corps (or something like that) volonteer as a teacher of English.

I would have done the exact same thing everyones innocent and smart after the facts, if you actually lived in communist Poland you'd do the same thing 'You got a family you've got an engineering degree, you wasted 2 years in your life in some damn army, you have nothing for all of your work'

I'd rather be poor.

But now you claim that he actually had to flee because his thieving came to light.

I think it's much better to be a communist than a thief... shame on your father, Penn. The thing you've acknoledged is much worse than every accussation Harry made about your father...

Any time you hurt a communist or a communist government it's something to be proud of,

YOU'VE MUST BE KIDDING. YOUR DAD ROBBED MILLIONS OF POLES! And you dare to make excuses?! I'm disgusted.

"wilczy bilet" (wolf's ticket - I don't know why they call it that way).

numerus clausus.

If you get it - the only job available would be an odd, manual jobs. Regardles of the university degree.

Probably not because you were not a socialist activist but a solidarity activist, am I wrong?

Well said Enkidu.

are you sure? can you elaborate?
Does it mean that in PRL there were uneployed engineers?

That there was no point in getting education and being smart and working hard? That an "engineer" would get hired regardless of their qualifications? Following that line of thinking, the whole "educated" class was just a bunch of incompetent idiots.

Of course it's not true.

Obviously, you won't agree with that statement, and you will promptly give an example of someone you know or someone from your family who did well, got educated, etc. and was not an active communist, or socialist, or whatever there was

I can give such example. Of course people who were on position had to be in some organisation but it was nothing more than a pose. The person I'm talking about indeed was in a youth organisation (or whatever it was called) but was never willing to join the party. And not because of political/ideological issues. He just never wanted to joint the układy...

And by being an active member.

being an active member meant to give speeches on 1st May. Nothing more.

And yes they were paranoid because it was a chain of corruption among party members. Poland wasn't Eastern Germany and it was never about ideology. Just about "układy"...

Job training in Germany, as for Poland everything they built in HSW went for export to the Middle East, Iraq, Syria, Libya I double checked with him it was all for foreign customers (at least during those 5 years here was there)(Poland's last major armor purchase happened in 81'/82' tanks made in Gliwice, armored transports near Warsaw).

Ok PennBoy I see you enjoy your discussion with Harry. Zatem powodzenia!

Language / Pronounciation of the name "Rafael" [16]

Anyway, "Jacek" and "Jan" pronounce it more like "Ra-fa-el" but "Maja" and "Ewa" pronounce it more like "Ra-fai-el"

Jan i Jacek divides each syllabe which sounds slightly unnatural, while Maja and Ewa speaks as if they were Spnish. Lol

If you type in the box a sentence: "Rafael Santi to znany artysta." then voices of Ewa and Jacek will be the best. Jan pronounce it in weird way, while Maja has a high pitch voice.

puella pllz, i'm not someone after gimnazjum ok? i of course know what he's doing but other people might buy what he's saying (believe him) and i can't have that, so i kinda must go along with it.

Everything he writes about you will land in trash bin eventually so don't worry. PF users already know the case and see what is happening.

If you ignore them they will get bored soon, but you heat the atmosphere by discussing with them, by explaining yourself and by calling people names.

Another thing is that you should make apologies for your racist and antisemitic remarks because that's the reason they are teasing you. And they probably stop if you make appologies and try to post your views in more acceptable way next time.

Er...not me - Havok?

yes, of course I meant Havok :)

And yes, people here do pretend not to be Polish. I won't point fingers but if one has a Polish nickname and yet you say you're not only NOT from Poland,

You should point fingers because I'm here for so many months, and I feel I really know most frequent PF users and I can't think of any person who could pretend to be not Polish (except that troll POLENEGGG but he actually wasn't pretend to be not Polish, he just didn't mention that too early).

I find people who behave like that (I mean those who are ashamed of their roots or despise it) as being very immature.

if one has a Polish nickname and yet you say you're not only NOT from Poland, but you don't even speak Polish, there is something to think about.

Many people here have Polish wifes and families or friends. Why do you think it's so hard to think of Polish nickname? I can think of English one, that's not a problem - does it mean I'm English?

Actually I still can't think of many users who have Polish nicknames and possibly could be Poles.

Btw, saying that someone's "brainwashed by psychology" doesn't make sense.

Yes it makes sense. I've read many of those positive affirmation books, how to make my life better etc. and I think it's a pure business. Note that Daniel Goleman wrote something like 3-4 books about the same thing (Emotional Intelligence, Emotional Intelligence in Practice, Social Intelligence... and even Ecological Intelligence! ;). They are sometimes intresting to read but many critise it as another fashion whitout real effect.

I'm guessing they meant "self-help" books.

Yes, exacly. I was missing this word :)

It's a job interview, not a shrink session and the objective of an interview

But it's a way of thinking connected with that "self-help fashion". What is the main messege in those books? Think possitive, believe in yourself, you are a master of your fate, you are able to achieve everything etc.

More realistic is to think that of course you have to be active in your life, work hard if you want to be sucessful but you can't expect too much because future is unknown and there are limits. There may happen unexpected thing (e.i. a promising sportman breaks his neck) which probably you could nothing do with.

best impression on your potential future employer, not to reveal the inner workings of your psyche or expose your deeply-held religious views.

So the only wrong thing they made is that they were honest...

I was questioning P's assumption that Havok belongs to a different generation

I just can't relate the problems he brings up here with myself.

Anyway, you can't apply generational categories to individuals.

I think suprisingly we can. I always laught out about those all socjological names for generations: yuppie, X, etc. but when I found the description of current generation I was astonished how many things pointed in the description fit well me and my friends...
