Australia / Difficult situation with moving (Australia-Poland) [37]

Agirlfromoz you guys are married – not dating! In my opinion you cannot just ‘divorce’ without fighting for your relationship first.

I think your guy might be scared of the permanence of this move. Why not move to Aus for a year or so and then re-assess the situation. If he feels this may not be a permanent thing he may be more willing to give it a try. And who knows, once he lives there for a while he may not want to move back to PL.

According to this article the food prices in Poland are not that bad when compared to other places in europe...

Food prices in Poland are lower than in other countries in Europe, according to a survey by Euromonitor International, published by Tuesday's Rzeczpospolita daily.

"90% of food in our market comes from domestic production which is the scene of strong competition.

Similar situation is in trade which has impact on prices," director of Polish Organisation of Trade and Distribution Andrzej Falinski said.

Apple prices are 340% lower in Poland than in Italy and France, tea prices are 14% lower than in Britain and 585% lower than in Germany.

Also cheaper is sugar, tomatoes, milk, poultry, flour or butter.

Poland's coffee and wine prices are in the region of the European average.

Food prices in Poland are not only lower than in Western Europe but also than in central European countries.

In Hungary only prices of beer and wine are lower than in Poland, in the Czech Republic and Slovakia only prices of carbonated drinks.

Work / What is the average age of graduate students in Poland? [17]

What is the average age of graduate students in Poland (and/or the rest of Europe)

It seems to me that graduate students in Poland seem to be younger than in the US. Is this true? How uncommon is it to see students in their late twenties/ early thirties in Poland?

Here in the states it seems fairly common. A person will get their bachelor and then enter the workforce. After a while they will go back to get the master degree after gaining valuable work experience. Some uni’s will not even accept someone into a master’s program without work experience.

Sometimes when I talk to Polish people or “newly arrived poles” they seem to be surprised that I am still in school. While American friends of mine don’t even bat an eye and consider it normal.

No one can sell you sh*t you don’t need like the Americans can - including patriotism.

America has lost its way. There is too much corporate control over the government. Decisions made from Clinton to Bush and beyond have way too much corporate influence. Clinton signs the China trade deal which send a huge number of ordinary American jobs to Asia (without ensuring fair competition). Bushie starts wars we cannot win to feed the military industrial complex and the associated corporations. Americans can’t find jobs but find themselves having to finance two hopeless wars. And who do they blame…?

When moving to PL/EU is there a way to have the credit rating from the US used when getting a loan in PL/EU or does the whole credit rating start from scratch again?

I bet he ignored Chicago because of how Kaczynski was always greeted in chi-town. Its a big FU to the chicago-polonia.

Although it's nice to see cleavland poles getting some exposure and recognition from the polish government.

... and besides, if the US did not sell us out to the commies after WW2 there would be no need for anybody to come here(USA) for economic reasons.

I think the treachery of soviet domination imposed on Poland in collusion with the US is worse than anything any Polish immigrant has done to the US by “sneaking” across its northern border.

Work / Cost of Living, Average Salaries and Job sites in Poland [263]

I have a good friend who earned her masters in Poland but when she applied to a university in the US she was only credited for getting her BS.

(keep in mind that there is a lot of money being made by the education institutions in the states and they will use any excuse possible to keep you in school longer and paying for it longer.)

Work / Intl business degree in Poland? [5]

I think the most important thing in this situation would be to check the schools and the programs accreditation (and make sure the accrediting body is recognized internationaly - mainly US if you ever want to comeback to the states you want the degree to be worth something). As long as the program is accredited, I'm sure it would not hurt to have it under your belt.

I may be able to work something out with my current employer for a huge pay cut but it may be worth it while I adjust to a life in Europe.

Just wondering where exactly you are making such big money? In your dreams?

I did not start of making that. I've been with the company for nearly 8yrs and survived several acquisitions and pay structure changes. As people left or were let go I picked up extra work.

Work / Moving to Europe from US (hopefully to Poland). IT, Programming, technology market? [13]

Hey guys!

I was just wondering what you think.

I'm moving back to Europe in spring 2011 or at the latest end of summer 2011. I would move today but I want to finish up my maters in computer science before I leave.

I currently make about 80k US (could be a little over 100k if it wasn't for the school obligations). I work in IT and hope to keep it that way in Europe. If I can make at least 50k US in Poland I would love to stay there and not go anywhere else. If I cannot I would be willing to go to UK/Ireland (where I'm quite sure my income wound not diminish much).

How is the IT, Programming, technology market in Poland? Although my Polish is quite good I would prefer to work for a western company where english is the 'lingua franca'.

Here is a little bit of my background:
I moved with my parents to the states when I was 10. Now I'm in my late 20-ties. Life in the states seems a bit too easy and predictable to me right now. I’m looking for a challenge and excitement.

Most of my immediate family lives in the US but I have family such as cousins, aunt, uncles and grandparents in Poland (mostly Warsaw, Bialystok).

Let me know what you guys think about the move and things I should keep in mind/watch out for.
