Travel / Modlin airport in Poland - closed again! [28]

Be warned -especially if you are travelling with children! Modlin has experienced severe fog in the last two months. As a frequent traveller between London and Warsaw I have now stopped booking and using Modlin because of the very frequent fog delays. In the last few weeks Modlin arriving and departing flights have been diverted to Okęcie because of severe fog problems. Today is no exception - flights diverted to Warsaw 'proper'.

Low cost carriers treat passengers in a really bad way during delayed flights and taking a train out to Modlin to then be taken by coach to WAW Okecie is not the ideal way of travelling 'low cost', especially if you live in central Warsaw. I've now cancelled my Wizzair bookings for November.

Has the Polish press reported on what really is a bit of a PR disaster for Wizzair and Ryanair? One-off fog is one thing, but the location of Modlin airport = a winter of problems.

If you do get caught in the mess, take some provisions as Wizzair and Ryanair provide almost no assistance.

News / Warsaw Modlin Airport is finally moving [29]

Warning for people thinking of using Modlin. Friends were charged 150zł for the taxi drive and it took an hour and 10 minutes to get there from the centre of Warsaw. Their ticket on Wizzair was £98 return each, plus £42 each for bags to check in, plus £14.50 each for the train from Luton to London. No food and drink is available at Modlin!! Everything considered, it would have worked out better to fly BA or LOT from Chopin to Heathrow, or even KLM via Amsterdam. Awful experience. Does anyone know why there are no food and drink facilities at Modlin? It takes low cost travel to a whole new level.......

News / Warsaw Modlin Airport is finally moving [29]

This spells disaster, I'm afraid. I would even say that Wizzair has possibly underestimated the awful transport facilities from the centre of Warsaw to Modlin and moving is too soon.

Other cities cope with low cost airports outside the city by having excellent transport infrastructure. Warsaw is still building up its road and transport network and is not quite equipped to offer anything decent to regular business travellers out at Modlin, especially at rush hour, late on a Sunday night or early Monday morning. It can take me 15 minutes or an hour and 15 minutes from the centre of Warsaw to Okecie airport, so Modlin will be completely unattractive to many of us who commute to and from the UK for business. There isn't a high speed rail or road network in Warsaw so how moving right now makes good business sense is a mystery.

It's a big shame as Wizzair at Okecie offers a great service at very good prices, but it looks like many of my colleagues will also switch to national carriers to Heathrow from July - unless Easyjet spots the perfect business opportunity at Okecie.

Farewell Wizzair.

warsaw activities in the winter

Help!
I have visitors to Warsaw this weekend and I want to give them a good time (in the snow)! They all came in the summer and loved it and now want to see the city in the winter.

I'm thinking ice-skating definitely but does anyone know of a spa/open air pool/sauna place to take friends? Anything similar to the Icelandic Blue Lagoon in or near Warsaw? (I'm guessing not but who knows).

Recommendations really welcome....from activities to cool bars, cafes and restaurants in these subzero temperatures.
Mr Google has thrown out a few ideas but this forum often helps me out better than him!

Djenks!

Food / Health food stores in Warsaw [5]

Hi everyone

Does anyone know of a good health food store in Warsaw to get a range of vitamins etc? Something similar to Holland and Barrett in the UK.

Thanks

Life / Polish blu tak [11]

What's the equivalent of Blu-tak in Poland? The guys in Empik didn't have a clue and said it didn't exist in Poland! Really?
