Genealogy / Vintage Photos of Polish ancestors [144]

@Beamish
Wow! Thank you for that priceless piece of information. The man to the left of my father is Adam Godowski. His nephew was also asking the identity of your father. Can you message me with your email address? I have a couple of other photos of my father and Adam in Greece, I presume on their way from Romania to France. Your father may also be in those photos

Law / Citizenship of Poland can be obtained through the blood line but my ancestor could lose it in the past [45]

My father was part of the 24th Lancers in 1939 and stayed in the UK after the end of the war. He became a naturalized UK citizen in 1957. I recently sent my documents to the Polish embassy in Caracas querying if I was entitled to Polish citizenship and they replied confirming that I was so entitled. I have to go to Warsaw to lodge my application. Not bad, 3 passports!

Genealogy / Hahn, Macieg - Looking for Mothers Relatives [5]

You will need much more info.

Where was she born?
Does she have any documentation such as birth records, immigration records, etc?
Did she ever have any further contact with family? Are there any letters?

Genealogy / Valentine Stolarz, Anna Banas, Jacob Mastej, Francis Bil [30]

I don't think you will find any Polish records online as you would for US or UK records on ancestry. Once you have located your ancestors home town in Poland or Galicia you will probably have to use a genealogy researcher in Poland or Ukraine to go through the relevant parish archives.

Genealogy / Family name: Mucha [19]

If he was part of the Polish Army under British command then have you checked with the Polish section, MoD to see if they have his service records? This should contain the names of his father and mother together with birth place and date. That should give you a good starting point for further research in the Polish parish archives.

Sokal is no more in Poland now

I am aware of this though at the time he was born it was part of Poland though perhaps I should have noted it is now part of Ukraine.

Genealogy / Anyone here from the UK? Looking for a Pristow [6]

This is a long shot but here goes.

By chance does anyone know or know of the children of Michael Pristow (Przystawski)? Michael was the son of Eugeniusz Przystawski (who changed his name to Pristow) and also had a brother Stephen who died in a motorcycle accident in Texas.

Eugeniusz emigrated to the UK from Sokal, Poland. Either Eugeniusz or his children married a red-haired woman, served in the navy and eventually relocated to Scotland.

Genealogy / Looking for people (or relatives) who have shared my mother's WW2 experiences [5]

Is it hearsay or do you have some "proof" to confirm your belief that she work for British Intelligence?

My father served during WW2 was was believed to have been involved in intelligence activities. He was at the University of Lwow in 1939 and (like a lot of Poles) was fluent in German, Russian but he also spoke English, French and some Spanish. A lot of his friends and co-workers suspected he was involved with intelligence but that's all there was.........suspicion, no proof.

You need to put your hands on as much documentation as you can regarding when your Polish ancestors arrived in the US, their correct names at that time (especially if they americanised their names), what town or village they were from, etc. This will help you narrow down your search.

Food / Mother of all hangovers....Polish Beer! [71]

have you ever tried Warka strong?

It's a nice beer! The emphasis here is on the strong.....

How can you say that

I do not get a hangover from beer but for some reason the taste of the Czech pilsner turns me off. I had an Urquell and another one in Wroclaw and I could not even drink half the bottle. I was looking forward to the pilsners!

Food / Mother of all hangovers....Polish Beer! [71]

Now that I really think about it, I cannot drink any of the Czech pilsners. I don't know why but it tastes "tinny" to me. Okocim, Tyskie, etc I like as well as Wolters and Braunschweiger but the pilsners do not agree with me for some reason.

Food / Mother of all hangovers....Polish Beer! [71]

Why does Polish beer give you the worst hangover imaginable and leaves a very bad chemical taste in the mouth?

Eh? WTF have you been drinking? Perhaps you're just not accustomed to drinking good beer?

Travel / Question about the Rynek and City of Wroclaw [15]

When I was there I noticed that nearly every other day you had different groups of guys who would walk around the Rynek chanting what I assumed were football songs and doing group push ups, etc.

Who are these people?

Genealogy / Searching for the HUDZIAK and MAZUREK family [14]

I think you will need to have a bit more information in order to really make progress. Do you have any documentation such as birth certificates? Since you are in Scotland did they become naturalised UK citizens? Information such as their parents and addresses will be on these documents which will help locating information about them.

My grand aunt married a Mazurek but their children were born in Sawchyn.

Genealogy / Polish Surnames Anglicized? [48]

One thing I discovered in my research was that 2 branches of my family (close cousins and distant cousins) both "chopped" the family surname in half and called themselves "Konas".

Genealogy / Surname WILK [8]

The Wilk surname appears in my family tree. Not much info about however.

My great grand-aunt married a Nicolaus Wilk in 1838 in Sokal. Sokal is just over the border in the Ukraine. They had 2 daughters, Catharin and Marianna born 1839 and 1841.

Do you have dates of birth, when they arrived in the USA, etc?

Have you tried searching the records on ancestry.com and the Ellis Island database?
