Life / Father moving back to Poland - about half way between Rzeszów and Ukrainian border [6]

He did it! My father bought a house in south-east Poland, about half way between Rzeszów and Ukrainian border, and plans to move there within weeks.

How are things over there? He is in his 80s, hard of hearing, and likes to pretend that he's rich and important. He has not forgotten living in Poland though, where he spent more than half his life.

Anything he should watch out for, aside from usual rip-offs, scam artists etc? Is it peaceful there? I've done a lot of google-earthing, it looks beautiful.

TIA

Off-Topic / Which PF expats are corporate "sleepers"? [55]

To answer the OP's original question: if there are any paid posters on this forum, the only one that would qualify is Pol3, the OP.

NocyMrok: I would be very hesitant to admit to belonging to any group with you.

Life / Welcome to Poland ! (Stay away for your own sake) [239]

In US, there are places where lowlife hangs out, and there are places where you will have a good time and be treated well regardless of your color, creed etc..

I'm surprised nobody jumped in and suggested some places for jose to hang out in Wroclaw where he will not be harassed. Unless those places do not easily come to mind... ;)

Life / Welcome to Poland ! (Stay away for your own sake) [239]

This rings true. Sorry jose. Cultivate a group of friends and stick with them. They'll introduce you to other intelligent people, and your stay will improve dramatically. Go to each other's apartments to party, not to clubs. Good luck.

Travel / The Magnificent Beauty of Nature's Landscapes in Poland [44]

My cousin sent me this, I thought it was pretty funny. He called it "First Pole on the moon". If you've been to any popular Polish beaches lately, you might find it funny too. I remembered it when I saw Pawian's beach shot.

USA, Canada / Do many Polish people in America hate Americans? [592]

Most sane people form their opinion of others on case by case bases. Anyone that says something that starts with "Americans are ...", or "Aussies are..." will be politely ignored at an intelligent gathering.

Love / Do Polish men think that Polish girls are materialistic and demanding ? [37]

But, since the divorce is still considered a personal failure, there is an added pressure to "choose right" from the beginning. An old adage of "it's just as easy to fall in love with a rich man as it is with the poor one" may apply here. On the other end of the spectrum, the idea of falling for a broken man and "fixing" him, which a lot of my western friends are enamoured by, does not seem to have a big appeal to Polish women. ;)

Love / Do Polish men think that Polish girls are materialistic and demanding ? [37]

I think that is just a process of growing up. Going with your heart is fine when you're young and rebellious. Then the realities start rearing their ugly head. Taking on responsibilities. Thinking about how the future family will be provided for. There is many different degrees and flavours of this "materialism", but basically this is where it comes from.

USA, Canada / New social security rules for Polish-Americans? [9]

Actually, many retirees on Social Security do not have to file taxes:

I don't know why there are taxes taken out of her Polish check. I'll look into it. I know she successfully declined the Polish health benefits.

USA, Canada / New social security rules for Polish-Americans? [9]

Thanks. Her worry is that since ZUS takes taxes out of her measly $250, once they see her US Social Security amount (which does not get taxed here because is too low for the US, even with the ZUS check) they'll try to tax that as well. She is a Polish citizen, with US green card. She worked in Poland 22 years, in US for 23 years. She is wondering if the taxes Poland will want might be bigger than their $250 check, and if they can dip into the US check for rest of the taxes.

USA, Canada / New social security rules for Polish-Americans? [9]

My mom got a letter from ZUS requesting her social security number. She receives about $250 from Poland (from which they take taxes), and a bit more from US Social Security (it's not big enough for filing in the US), and now she's worried that Poland will try and tax her US Social Security check.

The brief explanation she received in the letter refers to some agreement effective January this year. Anyone has some more info?
I found this agreement between Poland and US, link below, not much information for retirees there. Plus, it's much older; the dates don't match.

Any help would be appreciated.
