Language / iPhone / Android - Smartphone apps for learning Polish [12]

[Moved from]: Smartphone apps to learn Polish?

I have an Android phone, but it only knows english and spanish. Would someone suggest an app that can give me Polish keyboard, and also a dictionary to check my poor spelling?

Life / Need the name of a Polish comedy series and Poland movie recommendations [22]

Merged: Title of this comedy film (With Fire and Sword?) Also, please suggest similar ones.

There is a film where hero must learn english to win girl. He buys a "learn in your sleep" from some Russian shop, but when he awakens, he speaks Hungarian, not English. I can't remember the name, but I wanted to give it to a friend as a gift.

Also, my university has started a "global film club" and I wish to bring Polish films that many will enjoy. Which ones would people suggest? They asked me to bring "Katyn", which I will, but what else do you think? The problem is the film must have English subtitles, so that limits some.

USA, Canada / How to get Drivers license in IL without social security? [96]

Wow. I dislike illegal aliens who take advantage of the "host nation" and don't have to follow the same rules as legal immigrants. For very personal reasons, I think I could honestly say I hate them -- but I could never respond to the question the way most of you did. I am darned embarrassed by you all, so if you ever run into me, don't bother to thank me for my service to our country, because your remarks make me think you don't understand its freedoms.

I suppose we are talking about Illinois IL and not Israel IL. Don't know about the latter, altough I think your International DL (if you have one) will work there. And in the USA, you can get a DL without an SSN - a valid visa helps. An invalid one usually works, too. I know this is so, so don't bother cussing at me that you don't like it.

You can get a state ID (not valid for driving motorized vehicles) wihout photo or SSN if you are a member of a recognised Amish community within that state.

And, of course, you can buy forged documents (nope, can't help you) which is done, not only by aliens, but by American citizens, who for various reasons are trying to hide their identity. This is against the law, but if you are already illegal, what difference will it make? Reminds me of passing laws "to fight crime" by restricting the RKBA of law-abiding people -- by definition, criminals break laws - so they ain't gonna (sic) obey anti-Second amendment rules...or else Chicago and New York are free of crimes committed with firearms.

Food / What's your favorite Polish beer? [870]

One thing I can't understand is how some poles drink beer warm or hot. Two words that go great together are "Cold Beer".

I'm not really a beer drinker, but all the time I was in Canada we drank out beer at "room temperature," which is fine with me.

Of course, even with the heat on, the room temperature was around 11 degrees...

Food / Your favourite Polish foods! [180]

hehehe...I have used some of the recipes that you all shared (on some other thread), and suddenly my beloved Polish son-in-law decided my cooking was not as bad as he thought originally. I think I made ten pounds of meat in the Bigos, and he finished it himself within three days (yes, he has gained weight since I "learned to cook".)

While he enjoyed the other food, I think he liked this the best, so it is my favourite, too.

I wouldn't want to look into your toilet after eating all those raw yummies....

This is something you do often? LOL, I do not examine things like that, except in my own home. :D

Love / Woman 23, man 47 years old. What do you think about ? [162]

I think it's great. I'm 45 and my girlfriend is 25. Things are fine between us and marriage may be in the horizon.

So, this is OK, great, and one wishes good luck, but when it is the other way, other posters say it is an old, desperate, or sick female? Old men want to go with young women, you say go ahead. But if old women want to go out with young men, you should also say go ahead.

It happens to be a biological fact that men are in their prime when they are young, women when they are mature - so it makes more sense for a 65 year old woman to be with a 27 year old man than vice versa.

A good husband should not treat his wife as if she were his daughter, but the truth is that a good wife in many ways takes care of her man in a similar way to what his mother did (well, except for that) ;)
