History / Friedrich Nietzsche - Polish or German ? [73]

Lukasz, you will be banned again if you register another account.

I don't know what are you talking about.

Modern Germany isn't 3rd Reich or Teutonic Order that's the difference.

He considered himself Pole and thought that Poles were right he didn't hate his people.

History / Friedrich Nietzsche - Polish or German ? [73]

Well ... you don't believe in his Polish ancestry. I think it is very possible that he had Polish forefathers.

If we assume that you are right. There is this kind of people inside German society who hate Germany and simple prefere to be Polish. In battle of Gurnwald German comander changed side. German citizens were making pro Polish uprises.

It is very interesting phenomen.

Finaly, without looking on "blood" was he Polish or German ?

History / Friedrich Nietzsche - Polish or German ? [73]

Lukasz, you will be banned again if you register another account.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friedrich_Nietzsche

Friedrich Nietzsche about himself:

Even by virtue of my descent, I am granted an eye beyond all merely local, merely nationally conditioned perspectives; it is not difficult for me to be a "good European." On the other hand, I am perhaps more German than present-day Germans, mere citizens of the German Reich, could possibly be-I, the last anti-political German. And yet my ancestors were Polish noblemen: I have many racial instincts in my body from that source-who knows? [...] When I consider how often I am addressed as a Pole when I travel, even by Poles themselves, and how rarely I am taken for a German, it might seem that I have been merely externally sprinkled with what is German.

"I am a pure-blooded Polish nobleman, without a single drop of bad blood, certainly not German blood."

Is he Polish or German ?

But Kopernikus was neither Pole nor a polonized German nor a germanized Pole, HE WAS GERMAN!Read his signature again...he wouldn' call himself "german mathematician" if he would consider himself polish, now wouldn't he! Think!

Which might mean he [Kopernik] bracketed himself with Germans?! What do you think?

In middle agges being German or Polish had much different meaning. Political situation on Polish-German border.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikolaus_von_Renys

During the Battle of Grunwald in 1410, von Renys carried the banner of the Culmerland troops for the Teutonic Order, described in the Latin Banderia Prutenorum. Unwilling to fight against Poland, he lowered the banner, which was considered a signal for retreat that contributed to the defeat of the Knights.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prussian_estates

Norman Housley noted that "The alienation of the Prussian Estates represented a massive political failure on the part of the Order". At first, the estates opposed Order more passively, by denying requests for additional taxes and support in Order wars with Poland; by 1440s Prussian estates would act openly, rebelling against the Order and siding with Poland militarily (see Lizard Union, Prussian Confederation and the Thirteen Years' War)

After horrible 20 century we like to watch movies about battles between east and west but in reality it was much different. It wasn't batte between races like some people would like to see.

Polish German contacts weren't always hostile.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Congress_of_Gniezno

In 1000 A.D, while on the pilgrimage, Otto III invested Duke Boleslaus I of Poland with the titles frater et cooperator Imperii ("Brother and Partner of the Empire") and populi Romani amicus et socius.

On the same visit, Otto III raised Gniezno to the rank of an archbishopric. Three new dioceses subordinate to Gniezno were created: the Bishopric of Kraków (assigned to bishop Poppo), Wrocław (assigned to bishop Johannes) and Kołobrzeg (assigned to bishop Reinbern). St. Adalbert's brother Radzim Gaudenty became the first archbishop of Gniezno.

Which might mean he [Kopernik] bracketed himself with Germans?! What do you think?

I don't know what to think about it and I doubt in Bratwurst informations about this signature on documents to be true but I will check this data.

Now I will use Britanica:

What does it mean German ? My mother has German name but I wouldn't like to be labled "German" it is stupid. You don't know Polish reality and you talk like those Germans who came to my country in WWII. Genral Anders is great example. Proud Polish soldier fighting agains Nazi Germany in Polish army.

Open Polish phonebook and look on surenames there ... do you consider this all people Germans. Kopernik has Polish name but lets say it is German. What does it change ?

And I repeatedly answered your only "real" argument for his "polishness" that political allegiance doesn't change your racial or cultural heritage!

What kind of races you know ?

(I don't doubt that "Kopernik" is polish...that's why nobody else calls him that way but Kopernikus/or the anglicized Copernicus)

I have never seen argumentation you show us here. It is totaly new for me that Germans 60 years after the WWII consider Kopernik German.

PS: It was't a national war Poland against Germany....

Teutonic order is considered German. Kopernik was on Polish side fighting against German troops. He was studing in Cracow and he never betrayed Poland, and he could do so. My family knows that such decisions aren't politics.

In middle ages
It was normal war between Polish state and one of German speaking countries. Some citizens had Polish allegiance Kopernik was one of them. I feel uncomfortable in discussion about race and heritage inherited in blood. Firstly I would like to ask you question about Polish race ? What do you mean by that? Kopernik sounds Polish and I have this name in phonebook For some reasons I feel uncomfortable in such debate.

Nice to know but why should Kopernikus family called after "dill"???We eat that with fish...:(

In Poland we have such names. Kiełbasa means sousage and some Polish citiznes have surname Kiełbasa.
I have checked my Warsaw phonebook and I found Kopernik in Warsaw. It is normal Polish name.

His mother was Barbara Watzenrode, after his (unknown to us) father died he was brought up by the family of Bishop Lukas Watzenrode

Why you avoid his Polish father Polish education Polish language and service in Polish army against Germans.

When Hitler invaded Poland they started to catch Polish kids with blue eyes and gave them for new parents in 3rd Reich - because they considered them ancient Germans. They were destroing all Kopernik monuments in Poland, they have killed all Polish oliphic athlets.

Some germans have strange ideas about nationality. All Polish with blue eyes are Germans for some German nationalists.

Kopernik spoken Polish beacuse he was studnet in Poland he was comander in Polish army he fought against Germans.

And still he wrote this under every of his famous books (for Poles to find):

Do you know that Poland in middle ages has been considered (wrongly) by many people Germanic country. Wends ... Vandals ... Vinland ... Poland etc.

Later it has changed but in middle ages there were different interpretations. Not only those presented by hitler and later by communists in movies about bad Germans and good Slavs.

No I don't but maybe after 600 years when Poland will be richer with more influence than Germany somebody will calim her Polish nationality (of course firstly she must invent something). She admited this fact in interview.

Kopernik fought on the Polish side in war against the Germans !!!

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friedrich_Nietzsche

SO WHY YOU CALL HIM GERMAN AND WHY GERMAN NATIONALISM HAS BEEN BUILD ON HIS THEORIES? He never fought against Polish.

"I am a pure-blooded Polish nobleman, without a single drop of bad blood, certainly not German blood."

It is less complicated case than Kopernik.

Kopernik fought against the Germans ... on the Polish side.

So political allegiance changes race, culture and heritage??? Do you mean that???

Race ? What do you mean by Race ? Half of Prussian citizens prefered Poland than Theutons. They have sponsored Polish army made uprise and Kopernik was on the Polish side in this war he studied in Cracow. The most propably he had mixed ethnicy. What do you mean by race ? They prefered Poland.

It wasn't only German custom many Polish have name comming from town thy live in - it was Jewish custom - it was Polish peasants custom. You give strange sources. Maybe we should claim Russian minister Polish.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sergey_Yastrzhembsky

Sergey Vladimirovich Yastrzhembsky (Russian: Сергей Владимирович Ястржембский, Polish: Siergiej Władimirowicz Jastrżembski), born December 4, 1953, Moscow, is a Russian Federation politician and diplomat born into a Polish family, Jastrzębski vel Jastrzembski

Maybe we shpuld call Joseph_Conrad Polish

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Conrad

Joseph Conrad (born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski, 3 December 1857 - 3 August 1924) was a Polish-born English novelist. Many critics regard him as one of the greatest novelists in the English language-a fact that is remarkable as he did not learn to speak English fluently until he was in his twenties (and always with a Polish accent).

We don't change his name.

Maybe we should call Sarkozy Jew.

Maybe we should call Merkel Polish

German point of view is strange in this mixed part of europe. Kopernik had German mother. So what ? my mother has German roots too. I am Polish.

Yes, everything has "polish blood"...let's claim some more....

She said so in interview.

Open Polish phonebook and look on names there is plenty foreign sounding names. Without mentioning the most popular Polish name Nowak (it is like english Newman).
