Off-Topic / An English Version of Gadu-Gadu? [105]

Nimbuz lacks a desktop client. You also can't see history. you can try pidgin. If you had a mac then Adium would be perfect for you.

Nope, it's really quite advanced. You can use any SIP client as well as Skype. I would love that you can use the phone as a dial up device so you can access data whilst having no GPRS signal.

Language / I need advice - how long does it take to learn Polish? [70]

I've been going about 8 months now give or take and yes... my head hurts!

I've learned so much about English from learning about Polish, I did not know what a verb was... an adverb, noun, adjective, perfective, imperfective etc etc and it's been hard so far.

I still don't know a lot of stuff like the cases etc and after I've learned how to conjugate verbs then I'll move along to this.

I study new nouns all the time to keep me going. I'm actually starting to feel like I'm getting somewhere but I have a 4 year plan and then I think I'll be ready for Czech too.

My point is you can't expect miracles because it's just not going to happen.

5 Years... thats my own plan...

Law / Are Blackberry devices popular in Poland among business and individuals? [57]

absolutely, positively surely.

No exaggerating. This is a model that has been released just a few days ago. Sorta special thingie for those who need one way radio functionality (firemen, ambulances etc) but, strangely, no SMS to regular cellphones.

My apologies! :)

I don't think they have to install 3rd party for sending sms. You're probably exagerrating. It must be something with settings.

Agreed.

Regarding sales figures they varies by region/country. But in the U.S both manufacturers report rise in sales and rim leads because it sells more than one variety of the phone and sells through all carriers. It won't quickly loose its customers in near feature, especially among business users, I don't see any reason for it.

This is turning into something different. The reason why I believe that iPhone will become the winner of this race are the innovation in iPhone as a platform.

I'm sorry but if you honestly think that the Blackberry store which launches shortly will compare I'm afraid you will be sadly mistaken.

A few facts.

The iPhone SDK has been downloaded 800,000 times since it's release with more than 50,000 developers in the software development program there is simply no argument with these 2 figures and quite frankly even with the amount of devices running the Blackberry OS it still does not stack up application wise (and I believe it never will).

The app store has over 800 million apps downloaded to date this is a phenomenal success and I would personally be surprised is the Blackberry store moves 800 million apps in the next 10 years all this in the time space from June 29th 2007 until today. A completely new yardstick by which mobile devices are measured.

BES is a niche market and belongs only in the business place any normal person is happy with the MS Exchange push service if they even need that. I will not go into Exchange push vs. BB push because it's another argument but lets just say do you really need your emails that extra few minutes faster? I doubt 95% of people really do.

The iPhone has sold a staggering 17 million devices since its launch in mid 2007 yes thats 17 million! As I have previously stated this is a new yardstick by which no other hone is measured by.

The arguments are all flawed to me. Yes it does not have a removable battery... yes it does only have a 2MP camera... the list goes on... the point is that this really is a mobile computer in your pocket and Blackberry is a phone with a few good features. If apple wanted to put these features in the phone it would have put them there and they have there reasons for not doing so, Do they want to save some small reiterations to keep you upgrading? I think yes.

As for security well it is catching up and I believe by the time the Rev 4.0 software appears it will be more secure than a Blackberry.

All IMO backed up with solid facts.

tommy

I'll sort this out later.

1) Camera 3.2 megapixel vs iPhones 2.0

See my above arguments about lens size.

2. keyboard: clickable touchscreen feedback instead of touchy - this makes easier to make less mistakes when typing and less rely on software spelling correction.

Irrelevant. Personal preference.

3)Stereo Bluetooth - iphone's currently mono only*

Currently.

4. Removable Memory

5. Removable battery

Correct. See above.

6. Copy cuts rejoice*

Currently.

7. Very compactible with Microsoft Office products, comes with software to view and edit documents in Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. Can iPhone do that?

Yes through third party applications, can read documents already.

9. GPS with Turn by Turn dicretions - more detailed directions than the iPhone

Detailed? more so than gmaps list view?

End of the day it's well known iPhone is still better.

Anyone heard of storm?

Yes.

Its like iphone, but it has clickable touchscreen.

It's nothing like an iPhone except for the fact it has a touchscreen. It has very bad reviews.

Btw, Opera mini fixes a little bit the problem with visiting and rendering full-size web pages. Its fast. Faster than BB Browser.

You shouldn't have to download a web browser on a device with one built in already. IMO.

I meant when you need to replace the battery on the iphone it is a pain? do you have to return it back to base for a few days? On a normal mobile phone you don't need any special tools to change the battery

I'm with you don't worry. I meant you got me on that one as in I have no retort! My batterry has lasted well and it's been one year now but I would like to be able to slot in another...as I said you got me there...

to be honest internet browsing is crap on any mobile phone, I would prefer browsing on a pc anyday. ;) Oh I forgot there is no video cam on the iphone as well;)

I like the experience on the iPhone to be honest. I was posting to pf whilst waiting to get my hair cut today.

I have the Cycorder application and video recording works just fine ;P

Well in some ways its still primitive. A 2mp camera on a mobile phone was the standard 3 or 4 years ago. No replaceable battery, no memory card slot and no support for bluetooth stereo, it is also the same weight as a house brick ;)

I have to counter you because I am a mac geek.

2MP camera well yes but yours has a 5mp right? How thick is your device again? :> ;P if you know about cameras then you will know that the megapixel myth is not a great argument anyways with a lens the size of out little finger nail it's useless at gathering light.

No replaceable battery...you got me there.

No memory card slot...the 16Gb I have is quite enough for me surely you are not mobile enough to listen to/watch 16Gb of media?

Bluetooth stereo is announced already in the 3.0 update.

Weight? Try dropping your N96 5ft off of a tram in Poland and have it land on the corner of the device...I've had that phone and I know it would smash into pieces :)

GPS is available if you jailbreak and also announced for later this year. :P

Tell me how that browseing experience is compared to iPhone... ;)

Blackberries really are lackluster I can't stand them now. Plastic rubbish.

I used to do IT cover when our manager was on holidays and in emergencies (I lived on site) they asked me if I would have a blackberry and I said no so they then asked me if I would have my corporate email forwarded to my iPhone and I replied no again...looking bemused they asked me why and I told them that it was not the device I was concerned with but the fact that when I am with my friends in the pub I do not want to see any sign of work whatsoever!

I have a phone and if it's urgent then call me!

Oh! OK. I'm just listening in and trying to learn.

No problem. I have recently converted my entire family to iPhone users and everyone of them is amazed at how they ever used any other device before and all would not change them for anything else.

I really do recommend this product. 100%.

Yes, Jams, cakes, flavoured drinks, blackberries are very popular :)

The previous generation were Blueberries I suppose Poland has lots of those too?

Cheeky bugger :)

I didn't know this.

He was being ironic Wrocław. iPhone is the most advanced mobile device available.

I don't have iphone because I only use one phone and I prefer a physical keyboard to virtual when it comes to a lot of texting and emailing.

Many people do. It is a thing that I personally do not like also but I have become used to it and I find I can type much faster than I could on my 8300.

I also have the benefit of switching to a Polish keyboard at any moment.

Soon Blackberry will release its own version similar to Apple's Store, called Blackberry App World.

I doubt it will match up to the App Store. Too much ground have been covered in terms of innovation for developers.

Does push technology work only with Apple's email account or just any email from major email providers (Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo)?

Exchange(obv), Gmail, AOL, .Me and Yahoo.

There are many useful applications, such as google maps. With new Blackberry devices you can do almost as much as you would with iPhone because they support multimedia.

Ok I will not get into a slanging match about how much better an iPhone is than a Blackberry.

Suffice to say there are thousand more apps for iPhone than Blackberry and the 80% of them which are useful out number the hundreds of useful ones on Blackberry 100/1.

Btw, iPhone doesn't support push for a personal email, only corporate. Even the new version iPhone 3G does not support MMS in North America, but they are popular. And with the new OS release it will support MMS too. It has built-in MMS, but it is disabled when locked with ATT on contract for some reason.

I think you need to check your sources there. I have a .me account and I get push email, calender and contacts. Lack of mms is fine to me because I have email on the phone and if you do not then you won't be getting pictures from me.

Wrong, any sim card will work as long as blackberry is unlocked. I could use my sim card from my blackberry in another non-blackberry phone. But of course, you cannot buy it on ebay or without a phone. And you cannot buy prepaid, because you need either BIS (personal use) or BES (corporate) for data service. You might still browse web, but not have push email and data.

Ok but you are being stupid because what is the point of a blackberry with out push email?

It does not however from what I can make out (it's not exactly clear) he is thinking you can buy one from eBay but you won't have the sim (ERA won't sell you a sim without a handset) so the blackberry will be useless because it won't be able to pick up any data.

Study / American Muslim girl thinking to go to Medical school in Poland... [87]

Nothing I could do. It was at a tram stop (while the tram was stopped and people were getting in), I was jammed into the middle of a rush hour tram and wouldn't have been able to get out.

I missed that earlier, as MrBubbles said it was a shame I don't know what sort of a kick people like that get out of doing such things but it's disgusting.

A female colleague got her crotch grabbed

Sick fu*k.

.. and you can whistle if you think you'll get any help from passers by...

True.

Sad but true.

Study / American Muslim girl thinking to go to Medical school in Poland... [87]

three teenage boys spitting on a woman who was wearing a headscarf

If you have only seen this once then this could be an isolated incident.

I am English have lived in £ódź for 2 months on holiday and for sure there are not many foreign people, in fact I did not see another English person the whole time I was there. I did see one Greek person however he spoke fluent Polish as his father was a Pole and I think that the fact that he spoke a good level of Polish goes a long way if he was getting any abuse or snide comments. I did see many Chinese people and a small number of people of Asian appearance and I did not notice anything untoward even when travelling on the same tram.

So... I have read this thread and I can tell you that I would personally not recommend studying in Poland if you are going to dress in clothes which stand out from the rest of the crowd especially as you are of African-American appearance UNLESS you have a very thick skin.

Unfortunately this is the reality of the situation.

Poland is one of the most homogeneous countries in the world and is predominately catholic.

I ask myself the question of what would I do in your situation... Well personally I would study in the USA as university is a very important time in your life as not only are you under enormous amounts of pressure but you also are going to have an extremely fun time as all university students do!

Welcome to the forum and if you do choose to go to Poland please stick around and discover more about Poland and the Polish culture here at Polish forums because no matter what creed or colour you are: Witamy! = We welcome you!

What did you do?

I would hope he reacted with something containing the k word and either of the s words.

;)
