Australia / I got assignment for Community and Family Studies about Polish Culture in Australia. [7]

Hey guys!

I'm currently in year 12, and doing my major IRP assignment for Community and Family Studies.

I'd be happy to help, but the info would be from my dad as I was born in Oz. When do you need this by?

I suggest you go to your local Polish club. I'm sure some of the oldies would be happy to chat to you.

History / What was the culture of Poland prior to the advent of Catholicism? [17]

Gday mate

There is a good book called "World of the Ancient Slavs". It's been years, but I'm pretty sure itdeals witht he period youre after. I cant remember the author. The book is a large hard cover one.

Also try Norman Davies' various publications on Poland, but in particular "God's playground". Hope that helps

UK, Ireland / Polish and Irish should love each other [65]

I agree, particularly in respect of the Irish. Poles should remember the assistance the Irish gave to the Poles in their insurrections

UK, Ireland / I have concerns over the British immigration policy so I wrote to my MP. [126]

I wish this forum had an MP to write to. I'd complain about all the English that have invaded this forum, stealing our posting space, being rude and generally doing what the Poms do best - whinge.

We've got lots of you guys in Australia and Ive worked with heaps of them - they were generally lazy and inept at the quite simple manual tasks they were given. Poms are accepted though in Australia. I wonder if anyone would notice the Poles in the UK if they had English accents? Probably not.

Remember - 1940's England. Lots of Poles then - fighting for you - keeping your children safe - committed to helping you. Perhaps if the debt had been repaid in kind there wouldn't be this influx for obvious reasons.

remember 1942 aus, lots of "POMS" fighting to save your grubby dusty little island from the nips.....

You again (audible groan)!? You're like that Neville Nobody know it all kid in school who piped in to every conversation with an obscure tid bit of knowledge that no one really cared about or wanted to know. Bloody Pomgolian.

The Aussie diggers did just fine without any help from the Poms thank you very much - we actually lost heaps of good soldiers due to British incompetence (again) resulting in the fall of Singapore.

Don't call my country grubby and dusty. Just because you frantically wiki'd Australia and came up with Ayers Rock doesn't mean it's so.

they have all gone to England in an attempt to sink it.

Is it a case of the sins of the father being visited upon the son?

In actual fact, very few Poles died in active service in World War 2. A few died from 'friendly fire' as the Russians had to fight their way westwards through Warsaw towards Berlin but the truth is, most died from natural causes in the labour camps from dysentery and other common diseases.

Are you deluded? You must be.

thats Uhlarhu or some such you colonialist invador

Now that's just silly Issy. Just between you and me, we both know it was the Poms that invaded Australia (*whispers loudly* Australia wasnt actually a nation til 1901).

Kangaroo shagger, kidnapped any Aborigional kids lately?

Ha ha! Scathing!! I'm picturing a pasty faced Pom with a Spandau Ballet t shirt on waving a fist at the computer screen and the other arthritic hand feebly clutching a glass of warm beer with tobacco dregs. Did I strike a nerve Issy?

You'll keep mate.

*whispers* The lights from your monitor arent really the suns rays Issy.

Spandau Ballet

Sorry, I meant Dead or Alive ;-)

No sh*t,you dont say,wow...so the ethnic cleansing of the aborigionals and the forced seperation of children from parents happened for 70 odd years under an indipendant Aussie government did it? Ok,youve got the moral high ground back and no mistake.....

Once again you take a post and bend it your own ends. Not surprised really. The warms beer's getting to your head - watch those menthol dregs - they make my head spin too.

History / "SOLIDARNOŚĆ" is just a word for Polish people? [47]

I dont think it was just a word. I recall being very young when Solidarnosc inundated Poland. My dad was very happy - you couldn't tear him away from his Solidarnosc t shirt.

I see it as a metaphor for something that Poland did for themselves that really meant something - perhaps akin to the US Bill of Rights?

Does that song go on about 'we of the first brigade..duh duh regiment of fire power...duh, duh, we've thrown ourselves into the fire?'

Issy - I told you you were a menthol smoker. Is there a Spandau Ballet t-shirt lurking under that uniform ;-)

You made some good points Seanus.

The question I have to the British who have problems with immigration is this - how has the immigration effected you in a personal and negative way such that you see fit to complain about it. If the answer is it hasn't, then aren't your complaints disingenuous?

Not if you believe we live in a society with a culture rather than a multicultural society.

That's a little bit old fashioned isn't it?

My question was directed to how has immigration effected you personally. I'm trying to get some real answers, rather than deflections.

Its multiculturalism thats old fashioned and has been proclaimed a failure even amongst many liberals.

Wow - monoculturalism here in Aus was a dinosaur of the 50's and 60's - there was a brief resurgence in the late 1990's with the conservative right wing One Nation party, but it suffered the demise it deserved.

Something doesnt have to effect you directly and negatively for you have a right to be concerned about it.

I take your point, but my question wasn't focussed on the answer you gave. I was getting to the point that some people here have complaints and such strong feelings that the inference to be drawn is that they have suffered personally and negatively - I was curious if that was the case, or if they were just being disingenuous and jumping on the bandwagon.

UK, Ireland / A collection of noimmigration's threads or "STAY AWAY from BRITAIN" [978]

I would really like to see proof of that.

I recommend you read "The Forgotten Few" by Adam Zamoyski. There'll be a few uncomfortable truths for the British in that book.

In any event, it's pretty poor form for the British to critique the Polish pilots of the BofB. Analogy appropriate I think:

Stan gets into a fight with Fritz. John Bull promised to help Stan in that event, but failed to render any meaningful assistance.

Fritz turns on John Bull, and despite John Bull's previous inactivity, Stan helps wholeheartedly in John Bull's direst hour of need.

Things get better for John Bull, but not for Stan. When the dust settles, John Bull manfully critiques Stan's fighting prowess, despite the fact that Stan rendered meaningful assistance and more than likely tipped the balance.

Who should hold his head up - Stan or John Bull?

One thing I know for sure - I'm never going to help a Brit who gets into a blue! ;-)

History / Polish weapons and militaria - got any? [153]

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone has any antique Polish weapons and militaria? If so, what is it, and do you know its provenance?

Ive got an old warhammer stored away somewhere. It says "czuwaj" on the handle, which dad tells me means "careful". I used to smack trees with it as a kid til I was told not to.

We also had some Turkish booty from the Vienna campaign, sadly pilfered in WW2.

Look forward to your stories.

No, you're asking about Nazi stuff, so I asked you to have some respect for obvious reasons. Perhaps you could start a new thread somewhere else?

Man up will ya.

Sorry mate if I jumped down ya throat - didnt want this thread turning into a Nazi memorabilia flea market, that's all (plus I despise Nazi memorabilia).

is it not some form of Scout hammer

I'm not sure. From memory, the shaft is about 3 foot long of some type of greyish hardwood. The head was about 8 inches tip to tip, and had an axe type on on side and a hammer on the other. I also now recall another inscription nailed to the handle that said (trans) 'only in the greatest need'. I'll try to dig it out.

Polish sabre
Some old pistols from the Polish hussaria area
Some old armors

Wow, sounds great - any chance of posting some pictures??

I had to swallow my instinctive revulsion for "nazi" stuff

Yeah, I'm aware of that issue. As I set out, I didnt want my thread to become a Nazi junk swap meet, that's all. Cheers

PS - did you have any further thoughts on my 'warhammer'.

Have you looked on Ebay?

Yes. I was more interested in the stories behind the items rather than actually purchasing something from someone who probably has no idea about the provenance.

that to many in my country but you and your mates can do that at any time.

Ha ha. Perhaps you could also write a letter to your local MP Espana (on the influx of Brits) - the irony would be delicious.

I see from Mr H's posts a strong tinge of racism - why? Because it was reported back to him that the immigrants are filling the gaps created by the immigrating Brits. It's an equilibrium really.

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

I saw an interesting program on the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. I understand it was their 65th anniversary on Saturday - RIP to all the heroes who perished in their struggle.

What saddened me was the blatant hatred toward the Poles expressed by the Jews interviewed. One old lady, a Jewish insurgent, when asked about the worst thing she experienced, replied: seeing the little Polish children on a swing set watching the ghetto burn. Strange. Imagine having all that hatred built up for all these years over seeing children watch a fire.

Comments like this lead me to believe that there's something not right with some of these people.

It was strange listening to these comments, then watching the Polish government's memorial to the uprising - who really hates who?
