News / Does democratic Poland guarantee it's LGBT citizens respect for human and civil rights? [1169]

We all know that Levi lives in his own world that does not correspond to reality. When did A. Grodzka say something similar? I bet once more Levi is not going to give any source.

Although I do not know her, I saw A. Grodzka last week and believe me, she does not bother anyone, she just wants to be able to live as she pleases.

Enough with the bigots, who often have the worst behaviors, to tell people what to think, what to eat, what to wear, whom and how to f...! Why don't they worry about themselves instead of checking Inside others people's pants?

Study / Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management in Gdansk is a good or bad one? [6]

@AnnYu: Be aware that all these "wyzsza szkole" are considered no more than Mickey Mouse schools in Poland and their "diplomas" are Worth nothing not only in Poland but also everywhere else.

Vistula too is no university, it's a school with no special reputation owned by some Turk and here again diplomas are worthless.

"Studying" at such schools and such topis is pure waste of time and money. Diplomas are Worth nothing and in Poland jobs in touristic industry are scarce and paid peanuts.

Sorry, but your "plan" does not make sense.

Poland although very slowly shall move ahead and follow western countries. Within maybe 20 years, Poland shall have same sex marriage and some years later, gay married couples shall be "nothing special".

Conservatives used to say same about women's, Jews', Blacks' rights and fortunately they were wrong. No one can stop it...

Only matter of time!

Life / 500zl banknote returns to Poland [10]

I don't think most people can be concerned. I very rarely see even 200 ZL notes. A few weeks ago, I received a few of them from PKO Bank and I stared at them for a few seconds. Even sometimes when we pay with a 100 ZL bill, stores have a hell of time to return cash...

Life / 500zl banknote returns to Poland [10]

@Jon: I can count how many times per year I get 200 ZL bills on the fingers on one hand. How many times I want to pay with a 100 ZL bill and it bothers them. When early in the morning, we buy something for let's say 17.50 and we only have a 100 ZL bill, they don't like ot....

500zl bills are ok when paying huge purchases but useless for daily buying...

Life / Are there any Muslim areas in Poland? [173]

@Zaven: although 99.99% of Poles hate Muslims and everybody who happens to be/look different, since the Muslims must represent some 0.0....% in Poland, it is not an issue. People will not accept you but they will not bother you too... If coming to Poland, you'll hang around your Muslim buddies and that's all. 99.99% of Poles see Muslims the way Polish tv show them and do not try to see beyond....

Life / Moving To Krakow May (a place to live and work?) [48]

Krakow is the most polluted (geography + heating with coal) place in all Europe (2nd is Sofia and 3rd is Katowice) and is very provincial. Krakow should not be limited to Stare Miasto. As used to very big cities, Warsaw is a big village for me so Krakow is a small village. "Provincial" includes of course provincial mentality.

Work / What are the job opportunities in Poland for a young Italian with a law degree? [72]

@Angry Pole: 100% with you! Yes, the OP must ask himself what kind of job a Pole with no Italian and no professional experience could do in Italy?

As to getting a lousy underpaid at some crappy call center, it is possible in Poland as they are always looking for people since nobody stays long but sorry to start one's cv with an experience in a lousy call center shall NOT help in career development. Recruiters shall look at it like lack of ambition.

Best bet: to live in Italy with the girl. She'll learn Italian faster than he'll learn Polish and Italy is a nicer place to live than Poland is...

Life / Living Expenses in Krakow [42]

Hi! 500 ZL for food? Yes, if you stick to potatoes, cabbage, cucumbers, onions .... but if you want to buy what you feel like eating, expect at least 50% more. I spend 200/250 a week, just to eat at home and I also take several of my meals (without mentioning coffee) out (so extra money).

Do you think that you'll live like a monk and pay for your rent and food? I suppose you are single and young so what about expenses to go out? Also what about money for clothes, shoes, medical/dental bills, taking small trips around Poland once in a while (without talking about abroad), emergencies (something broken that needs to be renewed or repaired...).

Sorry, there are a lot of expenses besides rent and food. Especially since young and single, you'll be supposed to have a more active and thus shall need to have the money for it (and other needs). Based upon my own experience (I no longer have an "active" social life), I advise you to have minimum 4,500 ZL net every month otherwise not worth it. Coming to an unknown place, being alone and counting each coin does not make any sense.

Some people shall say that they know someone who gets by with let's say 2,000. Well, unfortunately, too many people do have to struggle with peanuts (not only in Poland) but this is not "living", it's just "surviving". Being on the survival mode is "ok" for locals as they have their family network and know the way to get a cheaper deal but not for foreigners who don't know the place and don't have network.

How much money should you have per month?

Life / Living Expenses in Krakow [42]

Terri: that's right! I have forgotten expenses such as cosmetics, hairdresser... Also do not forget about for instance dental bills, which can be very high and in case of emergencies, no choice but to seek treatment right away. In your budget, you don't include "getting away". Without travellling around the world, it is normal to leave town once in a while and spend a few days elsewhere. I don't mention far away plane travelling.

All adds up and when alone and thus no one to turn to in case of hardship, it is also necessary to have some savings.

To the OP: you cannot budget only on the amount of rent and on the price of potatoes and milk ,)

Life / Living Expenses in Krakow [42]

@Zaven: 2,000 for food (including eating out once in a while) is more than enough ;). Besides for your rent and your food, you need to expect a budget of let's say 1,500 minimum for clothes, taking small trips once in a while, dental bills (your insurance won't cover dentist) and also to have some savings in case something happens. So basically you need some 4,500 net every month. Less than that does not make it worth it as it'd be struggling every day.

Life / Living Expenses in Krakow [42]

@Weeg: could be but a young single foreigner shall not live like a monk and in order to do so, he'll need min. 4,500 per month.

PS: I live in Warsaw and occasionally go to other places and believe me, I am not impressed by their prices. I may pay 2 or 3 ZL less for a cup of coffee or a sandwich and that's all...

Life / Whats with going to sauna naked in Poland? [41]

@Jon: beach in .... Warsaw????

Anyway, even the Baltic Sea is too cold, too grey for me so I never go. I need warm and blue sea ;)

I have never been to a sauna in Poland (all the more as for heatlh reasons I can no longer) but I have noticed in a lot of occasions, that Polish girls are shy to undress (even to try a garment on) in front of others. I am a woman and I had several situations with (female) friends of mine not undressing in front of me (they had to go to other rooms) I must say that each time I was not comfortable.

Once again, the religiosity of most Poles ;(

Life / Whats with going to sauna naked in Poland? [41]

@Jon: sorry, but I like "real beaches" with warm and clean water so Poland out ;)

You must be kidding! Some guys don't want to go to public toilets if not alone!!!!

I myself am not "brave" but undressing in front of people, even of other sex doesn't bother me. I mean to get undressed when necessary not just for the sake of it ;).

Before being operated on, I went through comments written by Poles and one (Polish) woman had asked whether during operation, she could keep her ... underwear on ;).

Remember that a lot of bigots keep their nightwear when having sex and when washing....

Life / Living Expenses in Krakow [42]

@Cardno: I have passed the age of living like a student ;). I have never really counted but I must be spending 1,000/month for food. I must admit that I buy quite a few organic and also many foreign products. I shop at small shops, Spolem (a lot of quality products), Piotr & Pawel (their own brand is very good and not expensive), Leclerc (a lot of organic products + a lot of French products) and also Marks & Spencer (cookies (I love "short bread"), crackers, bakery, cereal....). In summer, I buy a lot of vegetables and fruit on the street. I eat out of home 3 or 4 times a week, when I am at work and I spend 15/20 ZL/meal. I don't buy meat other than chicken breasts or already cooked "antrykot". I buy fresh fish. I don't buy alcohol except when I have guests over for dinner.
