Life / Is becoming a Polish national this easy? [16]

Hi everyone,
First post! Happy to be here.

I will becoming to Poland to study for four years, and will be getting a long stay permit.

I've been reading up on how to become Polish on the internet (I can't link webpages in this forum, I've just discovered).

Simply put, it says that after 3 years, you can qualify for citizenship IF you are a permanent resident or a long term resident (which I will be), and speak the Polish language (I'm studying!). Is it really that fast to become a Polish national? I was talking to a British friend about this and he was surprised by how fast you can become Polish.

Thank you.

I'm Canadian by nationality.

Do they really discriminate against students like that for long term visas? I will look into this once I arrive into Poland and begin enquiring, but do you have any way to link me via private message? (they don't allow links to be posted here)

Thank you.

Thanks Monitor. Take a look at this: polish-citizenship eu/foreigners.html

From what I read there, you just need the long term residency for 3 years. But good to know that studying counts only for half the time... would have gotten my hopes up otherwise.

Am I mistaken thinking that I can get a long term residency right away? I already have a permit to stay in Europe and I'm just coming over to Poland and switching it for long term stay visa. I thought from then on it'd be 3 years...

Even if it's 50% for school years, 4 yrs would count for 2 yrs, then I'd have to work one full year in Poland to get the 3rd year, no?

From what you say it seems like I need to spend ~5 yrs just to get the long term stay visa. Which I understand, because some countries will issue "permanent resident" visas only after 5 years. But in this case they say permanent resident or long term, so I got a bit too excited.

Thank you again!

Because foreigners graduating Polish university don't need work permit to work in Poland.

I did not know that. That is great to know! Unfortunately I have studied in Switzerland and they allow you 6 months to look for a job, but it's by no means a work permit. It's just a permit that allows you to look for jobs. That been said, if you find a job, it's very difficult to get the position if you're not Swiss or part of the EU-country members.

I was interested in working in other EU countries to open up choices, and becoming Polish would have allowed me to get my foot in the door. Doesn't seem like I really have a way into all the EU countries but Poland as I will be studying there for 4 years.

Thank you!

Life / How and where do I return empty alcohol bottles in Poland? [17]

right, I've been recycling them until now but I was curious how much you get for these bottles. Also, what symbol, or Polish words should I look for when trying to see if the bottle is returnable?

Thanks!

Law / Gumtree.pl ad posting criteria? [9]

Merged: Is GumTree a paid online classified??

Hello,
I recently got into using GumTree, the Polish online classified. I tried to post an ad, and they asked me to pay 10 euros in order to do so! Did I make some sort of mistake, or is this some sort of annual fee for using the online classifieds? In any other country I've lived in, it's been free to use online classifieds...

Thank you.

Travel / Items limit of value during travel - Importation laws for Switzerland --> Poland [2]

Hello,
I will be travelling from Switzerland into Poland by bus, and plan to be bring in a lot of chocolates, and other snacks (no meat or alcohol).

I know that for bringing stuff in from Poland --> Switzerland, there is a limit of 300CHF value. Is there such a thing for when going into Poland? A friend of mine who travels by bus was often subjected to inspections when driving into Switzerland, and I wanted to inquire before I got myself into a messy situation.

Thank you!

Travel / How to get to Morskie Oko from Zakopane? [6]

Hello,
I am taking the very first bus of the day to get to Zakopane at 6am for a hike up to Morskie Oko.
To start the hike, it is instructed to take the bus from town to the beginning of the paved trail. I cannot find more specific instructions other than a minibus marked either morskie oko or, more likely, Palenica Białczańska. I'm a total foreigner and don't speak Polish well. I would like to start my trail without getting lost the first thing in the morning, so I was hoping I could get some clear instructions from people who have already done the trail. Please help!

Thank you.

Travel / How to get to Morskie Oko from Zakopane? [6]

Thank you!

dtus, could you describe how to find this back trail? Is it easy to get around?

It's just that we'll be arriving so early there, so finding a tourist office that's open will be hard.

Thanks!

Looking for nice one-day trip trails to hike in Poland

Hi,
I live in Krakow and during the weekends I'm looking to hike. I've already done the one to the peak of Giewont, and currently looking at Morskie Oko. Can anyone recommend other trails I can do for a day trip? Someone suggested going to the Slovakian side, but I don't know how I'd get there exactly.

Please and thank you!

Travel / Recommended National Parks in Poland [9]

Merged: Ojcowski Park Narodowy in Poland

I plan on going there this Saturday, and I'm curious - will it be possible to go snowshoeing there? There is plenty of snow in the Tatras, but I feel like Ojcow won't have the same weather.

I'd appreciate any tips for stuff to do there and your experience of the park.

Thank you!

Travel / Traveling out from Krakow to Slovakia for the May long weekend [7]

Hi everyone,
I'm interested in going hiking, staying in the mountain, or enjoying a smaller city aside from the usual capitals that I visit. I will be going from Krakow, and would like recommendations for cheap destinations from here, and what buses you recommend. Please and thank you!

Travel / How to get to Kosice from Krakow? [4]

Hi guys,
I don't know why, but it seems basically impossible to get to Kosice direct from Krakow. All connections seem to be from Prague, Budapest, or Bratislava.

I've heard that I can go to Zakopane, and take a shuttle bus through the mountains to the Slovak side, then scurry my way about there? Can somebody who's done the trip describe to me their itinerary that worked for them?

Thanks!

Thanks Jon! I totally forgot about tigerexpress!

Damn they're expensive though. 120PLN for one way? Seems excessive. I paid 35PLN for a train ticket to Szczecin the other weekend. Do these guys not offer a student price?
