Genealogy / Duda Family [23]

My surname Duda means "bagpipes" or "bad musician". I know that my family came from Nałeczów, Lubin, Poland. They moved from Poland in the early 1900s. Also my great grandmas maiden name was Kwiatkowska(from Karcziska, Lubin, Poland), but I don't know what it means. Does anyone know of the Duda family in Poland? Or what Kwiatkowska means?

Language / Standard Polish taught in schools? [18]

Is there a standard Polish taught in school like in German? What dialect is the most common? What dialect is spoken in Lubin? I tried to google them, but there was no straight answer.

Would this or any other dictionary that you could buy have this standard Polish?
Is it difficult to talk to people that talk with other dialects? Do you know any good Polish grammar books or better dictionaries?

Thanks that's very informative.

I heard that they're suffixes like -ska and -ski, what do they do? Are there rules to adding them onto last names? Sorry if I'm getting off topic.

Thanks, ya English is my first language, but I've been learning German for 2 years and I'm gonna take up Polish soon. Why do I sound like a non-native English speaker? Haha

Language / Adjective endings for Polish surnames - the role of the suffixes? [8]

What is the rule for the suffixes? Like -ska -ski and all those. I understand that they change depending on if the person is male or female, would their legal last name be different then? Does it matter what surname it is? Could it be done with Duda for example(which is believed to mean "bagpipes" or "bad musician" and other meanings)?

Thanks, what would Dudziński mean in Polish? Here in the US some people use last names as nicknames, and since nicknames in Polish use the adjective suffixes, could you go by both Duda and Dudziński, if Dudziński was a nickname?

I think I'm looking for diminutive form of Duda.

Ya I looked more on these forums and I now know that I'm looking for the diminutive or "nickname" endings, how would you add the endings onto Duda?

Language / Learn Polish or Russian [86]

I really wanna leave Polish because I'm polish, but I feel like it'd only be useful in Polish communities here and Poland, Russian is very useful all over the world and in science, but I'm not Russian. So pretty much I'd rather learn Polish but I'm a little iffy on the decision to.

I meant lern in the first sentence but I typed it wrong and spell check fixed it. And just cause I wasn't born in Poland doesn't mean I'm not Polish, delphamoine.

Language / Occupational first name in Polish? [7]

In English when you name someone a occupational name like "Cooper" for their first name it's ok, but would it be normal to be named "Bednarz" in Poland? Or would you be better keeping the pronounciation and spell it in Polish?

Language / Occupational first name in Polish? [7]

Thanks, ya I was asking that.

Merged: Name translation "Cooper"

My cousin's name is Cooper. He's on my polish side of the family and I was wondering what his name would be in Polish. I was going to start calling my family members by their polish name(like grandma, grandpa, aunt, uncle, cousins by their name, etc.), but I don't know his in Polish and I haven't found a name that means the same. So what should I call him?
