UK, Ireland / How a Second Language (English) affects the first language(Polish) -contribute to my B.A.! [4]
when did you start learning/ using English?
I've been learning English for about 13 years.
how often do you speak in Polish/ English?
I speak English every day and Polish every second day... I suppose.
How many years are you abroad (if you are)
2 years (England)
In what circumstances do you use PL/ ENG? DO you speak PL at home or not?
I use Polish when I talk to my Polish friends or family, I read books in Polish and also write some stories or notes.
I don't speak Polish at home.
I use English at the university, at home, on the internet. I read English books and I write notes in English. I generally use English much more often than Polish.
Newspapers, book, tv and other input in PL?
Books, internet.
Do you think in Polish or English?
Both but mostly in English.
Which linguistic problems with your Polish have you experienced by the using of ENG? (do you mix languages in sentences, use english words while speaking Polish?)
Sometimes I do mix both languages - I insert some Polish words instead of using the English ones (and English instead of Polish) or say things like 'really?' instead of 'serio?/naprawdÄ™?'
I also notice that sometimes I type some Polish words in an English way, eg. 'universytet', 'kurczack'. Some of my Polish friends also noticed that my Polish pronunciation is changing and starting to sound a little English but it is just slightly different and has no influence on my intelligibility.
Seeing an english name- do you pronounce this with an English accent or Polish?
It depends who I am talking to. In my head I always pronounce English names with an English accent, but when I am in Poland with my Polish friends I do try not to sound too English and not obviously Polish either.
