Life / Polish-American Polka Music in Poland [60]

I would like to hear from people in Poland about what they think of Polish-American polkas as exemplified by such bands as the following.

Polka Family
Brave Combo
Frankie Yankovic
Lenny Gomulka
Full Circle
Lil Wally
Jimmy Sturr
Happy Louie
Eddie Blazonczyk
Pan Franek
Ampol Aires

This is a list from earlier times to current and represent many different styles.
If they are unfamiliar to you, check them out on Youtube. They have the highest view counts for Polish-American polka bands on some of their videos.

I would also like to know if you've heard any of these on Poland tv or radio stations.
If you've never heard such bands, that would still be good to know.

Finally, have you heard any Poland groups play polkas and if so what were your thoughts.

Life / Polish-American Polka Music in Poland [60]

Come on people. I have heard hundreds of polkas recorded in Polish by groups from around the Rzeszow area, which last time I checked was a part of Poland, so maybe I'm bursting your bubble.

I know Polish-American polkas originated in the USA by immigrants from Poland.

I'm simply asking if anyone has heard them in Poland and if so, what they thought of them, to which I have landora's response, but I hope to hear from more people.

Now I'm seeing some of the responses that I was hoping to get (except for the rap part).

Since I'm a new member, the site will not allow me to embed or post links to certain Youtube videos that I would very much like to share here, until I get to a certain number of "useful" posts, whatever that means?

So I'll keep posting like this until that magic moment happens.

Life / Polish-American Polka Music in Poland [60]

It seems I'm now allowed to show Youtube links and I see people here embed those videos. I've never done that before so here's my first attempt.

Here is Hej Sokoly as a polka, done Polish-American style.
I know this song has Ukrainian heritage but I chose this one because I assume most people in Poland have heard this song in a different style so it will allow a more direct comparison.

Any reaction at all to Hej Sokoly as a polka?

Life / Polish-American Polka Music in Poland [60]

Wow, someone feels I'm trying to "forcefully indoctrinate people".
Where does that come from?

We enjoy this style of music in America and because it is sung in the Polish language (and not because it is any way native to Poland) I wanted to know what folks in Poland thought about it, especially if they hadn't heard one in a very long time or not at all.

I've got my answer.
Thanks to all who replied.

Trevek, the video of Orkiestra Sw Mikolaja can be considered to be a polka. I'm not a musician so I can't talk about the beat in those terms, but I am an avid dancer and a polka is a dance which takes a first step followed by two quick half-steps.

Your video would be considered "Eastern" style polka in America which was the original style developed by the Polish immigrants. In the 1960's the "Chicago" style developed which was a much slower pace than Eastern and is very popular today.

The Hej Sokoly video I posted is Chicago style.
The Brave Combo video posted by polkasunited is Eastern style.

To those that say Trevek's video is not a polka, what dance would people do to it?

This Polish group calls this a polka.

Life / Polish-American Polka Music in Poland [60]

So hopefully we now have a fairly broad definition of what constitutes a polka.

For other posters who have referred to the rural roots of polkas, here's a band from Krakow that seems to include polkas in their repertoire.

Trevek, the Cajun polka you linked is by Eddie Biegaj & Crusade, and this was one of his big hits in the US. They are unfortunately no longer together as a group but this is a fine example of Polish-American polkas. It is also interesting to note that Eddie Biegaj is a classically trained opera singer.

convex, if I heard the Dance of the Mirlitons, I wouldn't dance to it at all.
To the Leron Sinta and Billy Boy, I would do the country-western triple two step.

Life / Santa Must be Polish - by Bobby Vinton [5]

As a Polish-Canadian I can tell you that even though Bobby Vinton is getting "older", at a concert in Toronto a few years ago, the place was packed and by the reaction to My Melody Of Love, the majority of the audience had to be Polish, and standing ovation with "one more time" concluded the evening.

USA, Canada / Where to get Polish (disco polo) CDS in Canada? [3]

Try RapidLibrary.

Noce z Toba is on their 1997 cd "OK" and on their 2008 cd "The Best of Boys Cz.2".

Michal Jelonek...where to get his CD's here in the US?

I've really been getting into his music lately - fabulous stuff!! But I cant find CD's of his anywhere locally.
Does anyone know where to get anything of his?

Try downloading it from a file share or other (LEGAL ;) lol) website...
It looks like thats probably your best bet...
