It's an awful long thread, so someone might have asked you that question, but do you miss Canada?

I live in the States, and whenever I pick up the topic of moving back, I always get the "grass is greener on the other side" song.

So how do compare the life styles between both countries? Are you happy with your decision?

Language / déjà vu in Polish [23]

Polish, unlike German and English does not have long vowels. If you did not practice enough foreign languages you will not have the ability to pronounce them, or even notice them. I become aware of that after taking phonetics classes, and once I started working on my long vowels my accent in German and Polish decreased.

And I think that is the problem here. They just pronounce the vowels too short.

I'm sure she will be an object of desire for locals. It seems like men from all countries are into French accent or French women. I can't explain it. I'm not a man.

I personally think French accent sounds cute in a women, but when it comes to men I can't help it, but makes me wonder if the guy is homo.

And answering the original post, I think Polish people are usually so happy that anyone learns their forgotten language that they don't notice the problems with accent or mistakes.

I used to love to listen to my German "lektor" speaking Polish. She would talk like a robot and say things like "Studenci jadą w kafeterii", but I was so happy anyways that she learned my language.

i think for anyone coming from Canada/USA and moving to Poland.

It all depends from perspective. From what I understand you are a foreigner living in PL. Aphrodisiac does not have to face the language and and culture barrier which you do. For one thing he is at home. Can't beat that.

Danka100, one thing I don't understand is why you think that two months will take care of everything. You can't have your cake and eat it. Say you are together for the two months, all is great. You stay and things don't work out after 2 years. You can't look at a relationship like on some sort of job contract.

If you think this is the guy for you, go for it. You probably have much higher chance to find a another good job than another good guy.

And say, something happens to your workplace, like eg. your boss files chapter eleven or lets you go. Nothing is granted. I'm saying that because I had a dilemma of similar sort. I had a job that I liked. When my first kid was born I took only 3 months off so that I can be on top of everything, especially that the time of the year was really critical for that job. I saw my kid for maybe 2-3 hours a day. 6 months after I came back to work my boss out of the blue decided to outsource my department. I can't tell you how bitter I was. Not because I was laid off, but because I've lost 6 months of being with my then baby for that stupid company.

if the weather is -10C here and -20C in "the west", it's still more difficult to deal with -10C here.

I personally did not find the temperatures in Poland as harsh to deal with as much as the luck of sunshine. There are very few sunny days between end of October and March. When it's cold I just dress warm. If there is no sunshine for a longer time, I just get depressed.

yes, people here stated that Poles don't smile... i somehow agree with that after seeing every day smilling Americans... but i prefer less bullshit, so i don't mind not smilling people...

The statistics tell you more about Polish men than women though. We are in the macho crowd.

I'm from Poland, and my (non- Jewish) mother was always making them just like the Jewish version you described. My family would put sour cream, or sugar on them.

My husband who is from Germany likes to eat them with apple sauce, and he says that's how they are eaten where he comes from.

I like them just plan. BTW, it's a good lunch idea for today. Thank for reminding me about them.

IMHO, a macho culture is where men feel self-important just because they are men and it's completely acknowledged and accepted by the society that a women can only feel fully accomplished if she is in a relationship with a man. Therefore women tend to behave more flirtatious and dress more seductively because they are under a lot of social pressure to land a partner.

I'm actually surprised Russia is not in top 5.

Now, I've hanged myself to dry.

Who cares if there are more heterosexual couples? The earth is overpopulated anyway.

However, the countries with the highest percentage of gays are the well developed, historically white countries. Those are also the countries with the lowest birth rates (except for the US maybe). It seems like somebody worries that there are not enough white babies being born???

That's what I'm getting at. I have many girlfriends in Germany who complain that it's hard for them to find a German boyfriend since so many of them are gay. So they go more exotic. Now, if "they' (whoever is running those centers) managed to "cure" gays, then the chance of white white marriage/relationship becomes much higher. That means more white babies.

I think that less arrogance and less demands from European women will mean more European babies. Simple.

Please do not put the blame on women. If anything it's the sick European individualism that's brings people to search for new experiences, self fulfillment and the market that caters to that. Why would man or woman go into the hassle of raising a family (and it's a hard thing, I know that) if they can be entertained.

It's the honest approach and bow to you for admitting what's true for you. But then we should not cry when we are old that there are not enough workers to pay into the pension fund. I don't think individualism is that bad. It just does not make European societies sustainable.

Though I read you post again and now I'm not sure what you meant. So if I'm off the point please tell me I'm off.

I've read about one in Hamburg, Germany. It's basically a place where you can walk in, practice language and socialize.

Thank you for he info. I'm dreaming (for now) about coming back to Poland, but if I do it I would like to have my own business. So I thought about the café, but I see it might not work.

All I know about is teaching languages.

I was thinking about some sort of Starbucks kind of place with language meetings. Once, did the people who tried to open those places have just the language classes, or had they more ways of making money?

Is the market for language schools oversaturated? When I left in the 90ties there were plenty.

'summer open-air language meet ups' probably could not feed a family, though it's a great idea.

I think nauczyciel has a lot of good points. My brother is running a business in Poland and he has the same kind of problems with people, no matter how much he pays. He ended up hiring Ukrainians, at least they are working better. But making a lot of promises and not showing up is the general problem with both nations.

nauczyciel's produce vendor was clearly dishonest. They both agreed to the price and quality of the goods. Defending the vendor is simply stupid. Polish people just are the happiest when they get to rip someone off, and I'm saying that also from my own experience with construction workers. First they agree to a price and how much and what they will do, then they realize, "that would actually be a fair deal, what's there for me?" and they cut corners.

I don't know about the Polish bureaucracy, but it must be outrageous given the fact that regular polish people come to the States and start and run successful businesses and they could never manage that in Poland. Though I think food industry has probably more restrictions than any other business.

BTW, what's the "October surprise"

I like it too. Though the movie has always left me longing to see how the marriage would work out. I've always thought that the peasant life would be to harsh for Justyna and she would end up resenting Janek.
